Notes: Traquair Jacobite Ale is a Scotch ale with an ancient ingredient, coriander: rich, deep flavors are accented by exotic coriander aroma. Traquair House Brewery, located within Scotland's oldest inhabited house, uses a 1738 copper kettle and oak fermenters to produce this fine ale, first brewed in 1995 to commemorate the Jacobite Revolution.

Just the bottle alone tells you that this is a very serious beer, with a heritage positively steeped, soaked and dripping in Scottish history. Produced on an original 18th Century Brewhouse, that had remained unused for 100 years until 1965. The brewhouse is located in a part of the 1,000 year-old Traquair House, which is Scotland’s oldest inhabited home, and included such famous visitors as Mary Queen of Scots and Bonnie Prince Charlie.
Jacobite Ale is of the highest quality. Very black in colour but with daylight as a backdrop, it has a stunning deep ruby red-brown color. The brown fluffy head did not last long and dispersed to a ring quickly. A huge powerful alcohol punch in the nose tells the imbiber to gently sip this offering. Aromas of dark fruits, berries, herbs & spices, coriander in particular, sherry and some Christmas Cake. Starts with an alcoholic introduction that is the MC for the imbibing experience. Dark - but not very roasted - malts are in the middle, a light chocolate taste together with some sherry sweetness, which leads to a lovely warming bitter finish. All Traquair House beers are oak-fermented, and this gives an earthy - oaky woody character, most prevalent in the aftertaste. A Strong Dark Scottish Ale. Powerful, but not overpowering.

330 ml bottle served at cellar temperature into a tulip. LCBO purchase for just over $3 CDN. Very excited to try this. Review is partially from notes from first couple tastings as well as another review. Had to have a few "samples" to make sure it was ok;) Best before August 2028.

Appearance - Dark chestnut brown with honey brown hues. A small half finger of light tan foam rests on top and fizzles away inside a minute. Sufficiently dark that you can't see through it.

Smell - Subtle earthiness, with some caramel and molasses mixed together, faint whisps of wood and above all a subtle but juicy dark fruit mix. Plums and figs are most prevalent.

Taste - Complex as hell. Dark fruit like plums, molasses and treacle, some earthy and musty wood, juicy bits of caramel coated fruit and finishes with a mellowing bitterness that is unmistakably from the UK. Booze is hidden completely.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, a bit sticky yet also finishes dry. Booze makes its presence known in the back of the throat and carbonation is quite light. Easy sipper.

Overall - Wonderful brew from Scotland, closest way I can to describe it is an amped up ESB, with caramel and molasses, aged in wood for awhile and just oh so mellow. A great beer that is well worth the time and effort to find.

A - The pour reminds me of a Guinness extra stout. Very dark brown color with toffee looking head. Pours 2 1/2 finger head that dissipates averagely fast leaving no notable lacing.

S - I'm honestly not fully sure what to make of the scent. It appears to have a fairly robust aroma with a quite overwhelming scent of booze. It reminds me of Jack Daniels mixed with dominantly malts as well as dark fruit notes. Honestly, the aroma appears to be dominated by boozy scents more than anything. Very unique aroma.

T - It's a great tasting beer but nothing more. It almost feels like the beer is water-downed in flavor/ is lacking something that you'd expect given the fullness of how the body feels. Hops? Ha. None. Tastes like straight malts with hints of coffee, maybe? but not much else. Boozy flavors slightly present.

M - Very full bodied beer with the proper amount of carbonation. Drinks incredibly smooth; feels like sipping on hot cocoa -- wouldn't mind this as a cocoa substitute during the winter.

O - Great beer overall though it felt like I was drinking a weak bourbon. Very drinkable and amazing mouthfeel but I can't really decipher much from the taste.

Molasses and booze, like a White Russian. I am not familiar with this style, but I suspect Traquair Jacobite is probably a great reference beer for Scotch Ales. Plus the name reminds me of Jaqen H'quar, which is probably why I bought it in the first place.

Pours a very dark, almost black colour with a beige head. Head is tight and disappears slowly at first and then more quickly to leave a fine film to the very last drop. Lots of lacing.

Nose is coffee, chocolate, caramel, dark fruit, red berries. Even a hint of vermouth - Superb.

Palate is very complex, rich, full-bodied, well-balanced and very smooth. Coffee, caramel, dried fruit, biscuit, some spices and a little whiskey (really) - hard to believe it's 8%.

Overall this is an absolutely superb beer. A huge, complex, full-bodied and flavoursome beer.

Highly recommended.

For starters, the aroma on this beer is fantastic. The coriander, herbal smell is amazing. I could keep my nose in the glass all night. There's also a sweet maltiness in the aroma.
It's a dark brown, very attractive beer with a wispy, cream-colored head. Taste is sweet and somewhat spicy. There's a graininess in the mid-taste and a nice underlying maltiness. Finish is a nice balance of mild bitterness and malt character. Certainly worth having again.

I was expecting something completely different. When I saw this was infused with corriander (the seed of the cilantro plant) I thought I would get a stong 'soapy' or metallic flavor typically associated with the spice and it's herb. It gave the beer a unique characteristic, but basically blended itself in seemlessly with the beer, which was damned good. The taste of the beer just dropped out from underneath on first tasting. Very clean, with little to no aftertaste. you have to keep drinking it to get a hold on its flavors. For a beer that advertises itself as a corriander beer, it doesn't really reflect its billing, but the beer itself is trully good and should be enjoyed.

a - dark in color, not as murky as the house ale. med-low carbonation.

s - smell the coriander, mostly. some dark fruit

t - some scotch flavor (peat), small bitterness. coriander flavor less than smell.

m - too light of body. light carbonation, which i normally like in scotch ales.

o - coriander does not fit IMO. As with the house ale, over priced.

This beer poured out a very black color that appeared dark ruby when held up. Was no head on this one, maybe due again to temperature served. I had the coriander aroma plus some malt. The flavor was of coriander, toffee and anise. The body was not bad, the finish a little bitter. A good dark beer, but a bit pricey. Maybe on certain occasions.

330ml bottle, found in Las Vegas and brought home to the UK 18 months ago: I figured it will have settled by now.

Poured into my Westmalle chalice: Ruby red with only a thin collar and mini wisp for a topping.

The smell at first was vinous, then comes dark chocolate, red berries and plum bread all at once, lovely.

This is my sort of beer, rich, almost smooth: the semi-sharpness of the hop bitterness reminds you this isn't supposed to be soft, it's a Scotch Ale not a Milk Stout! There are a multitude of flavours to find: spices from the Orient, berries from the forest, dried fruits in a Christmas cake, malts from a distillery, haggis from the hills. Take a sip and close your eyes, wonderful: let your taste buds go crazy.

This is a warming, winters brew and so, so well made: the alcohol is well hidden, comes out towards the end of the drying mouth, but not harsh or unpleasant, just letting you know that the car keys should be given to someone else.

If only the beer looked better in my glass (I do love a proud, deep head on my beers).

Bottle I brought to share at jmgrub's tasting.

Pours a hazy dark orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down either. Smell is of malt, brown sugar, dark fruits, and spice aromas. Taste is much the same with a fruity flavor on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer that is tasty and has a great smell.

The web tells me that a Jacobite is a Scottish person who still believes the King serves by divine rite and not from power from the Parliament. This beer is something just as unique and unusual. The brew pours with a minimal 1/4 " head and dark brown in color. It smells great and leaves you scratching your head a bit trying to reconcile the appearance and smell. The coriander comes through in the taste although there is an oakiness too. A hint of sherry and licorice. A bit of bitterness. I don't expect a coriander taste with these combinations. As Putnam mentions, according to the bottle these are good for another 6-7 years. I think it would be worth cellaring a few of these and seeing what happens. Would they get even more complex? Hard to imagine.

Purchased at Sam’s chilled and poured into a nonic. One finger off white gray-ish head developed and dissipates into little more than a film. Body is dark blackish brown almost completely opaque. Smells is strong coriander, I get a sort of berry yogurt smell which is strange, not completely unpleasing, but very different. The malt is there just masked heavily by prune juice smell. Taste is similar with that prune juice character and dark malt undertones. As this brew warms the toasted malt with tiny hints of coffee and chocolate can be spotted, but on the finish its straight prune juice again. The abv is fine and the mouth feel is decent, just slightly watery for a wee heavy, but it leaves something slightly acidic on the very back of my tongue. I really want to like this, but I just can’t get past the strange fruit. Maybe its my tongue or a bad bottle, but as it is this beer is just not for me I’ll stick to my dirty bastard.

On the shoulder of the beer: "BB28 DEC 2023 L5148 12:10"

Appearance: A dark brown body with mahogany accents where light strikes it. The head is short and instantly fades to a small medium sized raft. While it was standing the head was a very light khaki color.

Aroma: Sweet caramel and coriander. It is a surprisingly enticing yet simple combination. Over time it takes on a character similar to vanilla. It smells very much like a Belgian Strong Dark Ale without the dark fruit character or Belgian yeast character.

Taste: Again there is a strong caramel flavor (not buttery) with a hint of a toasted flavor and a very strong coriander flavor. The beer says it is "fermented in oak barrels" and I can't say that I pick up any oak character but the overall beer flavors are very good. I am very impressed at how well the flavors have held up in this import. I am not getting any oxidation and the flavors taste clean and don't feel depreciated. Just a touch of apple in the finish that develops over time.

Mouthfeel: It has a medium body without a lot of texture. Overall it is a clean and well-defined beer.

Overall: This is a very different Scotch Ale; one that has coriander. I love it. It tastes great. I bought it thinking that there would be more oak character and there wasn't any that I could perceive, unless that lightly toasted flavor is somehow imparted from the barrels. I was very surprised at the flavors of this beer because the caramel flavor of the malt and the coriander flavor work very well together. They just create a unique flavor that is very enjoyable. The whole drinking experience of this beer is more enjoyable than the sum of its parts. I recommend it and I would drink it again. Although this beer does not taste like the standard Scotch Ales it is on my radar for future recommendations.

Dark, with reddish reflexes. Pretty foam, even if not too much. Brown color.
In the smell: malt, wood, raisins, vanilla, candy fruit, candy orange peel. Ah, yes.
Good taste, too, with again malt, raisins, candy fruit. Earth, dusty, cocoa.
The body is something more than average to light.
In the aftertaste again something woody, earthly, and cocoa.
Light barrique/sherry/chocolate.
Very good.

Pours a deep brown color with a dense tan head that dissipated into a light ring. The aroma is of corriander, which drowned out the other aromas. If you like the smell of corriander then this is up your alley. The taste is a unique mixture of corriander and chocolate malt. It starts off with a corriander hit then transitions nicely into a milk chocolate. There are some notes of vanilla and prunes as well. The feel is moderate to well bodied, with soft carbonation leading to a nice silky texture. The brew finishes a tad bitter from the malt with a touch of booziness. This is a very fine brew, nice flavors and very smooth. The corriander and the rich malt work very well together and is an interesting mix. Recommended.

Appearance: Cloud dark brown body with a light head that floats atop.

Smell: Very nutty notes come forth and are balanced with a hearty sweetness that comes strong from the malts.

Taste: Biscuit notes are mixed with the roasty flavors and end crisply with a small alcohol finish.

Mouthfeel: Being the style, it covers lightly but olds strong with an alcohol-like feel that is expected from the ABV's

Drinkability: The alcohol feel is pleasant and expected as mentioned before and therefore creates adequate drinkability.

Immediately after opening the bottle I smelled what I would swear was Froot Loops or Trix (I assume that is the corriander). 1995 edition (through June 2009). Poured a lovely burnt sienna (I have the Crayola to prove it) color with a lively short lived head and lacing. Berries, licorice, and slight alcohol flavor pervade. Almost $5 a bottle here in Ohio but this was worth experiencing and I will get it again for sure.

Best before June 2014. Love the reverse labeling (white on black) on this one.

A: Poured into my cab glass a murky black chestnut with a light tan, creamy head that immediately disappeared leaving a nice halo around the rim of the glass.

S: Thick, syrupy mix of coriander and sweet malts. Very pleasing and soothing smell.

T/M: Wow, now that's a unique and tasty beer! Much like the nose. Medium to full bodied and flavored with a relaxing mix of sweet coriander, caramel malts, light yeasts and spices. Very nice! As the beer warmed, the alcohol came out a bit, but it was never taxing on me.

D: I wasn't certain if I'd like this one, but I really did! It was very soothing and it's a great beer to finish the night off.

Pours a very dark color for wee heavy, dark dark red.
Can't see through it without holding to light. Small tan head that doesn't stick around. Sheets of lacing do stick around when swirled though.

Smells like leather, bread dough, prunes, blueberries? , yeast, coriander maybe ; even though the bottle says made with it, its hard to detect. There is a rotting fruit smell that is actually inviting, leading me to expect some unique flavors.

Taste isn't as good as the smell. Smoked malts, yeast and dark fruit mostly, with some spice that makes this beer quite unique.
Not the flavor punch of traquair house ale, but still good.

mouthfeel is watery, and lightly carbonated. I think it could use just a little more bubbles and viscosity.

Drinkable, to an extent. Sessionable yes, at $4.50 per 11.2 oz, no.
