Reviewed from Half-drunken notes on the back of a menu one week later.

2oz poured from the bottle into a Meddlesome Moth Prairie / Jester King Halloween Spectacle Glass.

Appearance: Crimson and Purple with a persistent pale mauve head, loose with champagne-bubbles and somewhat small. Minimal lacing.

Smell: Lots of berry fruitiness, blueberry skins, hints of tart strawberry. Suggestions of mint play in the background. Jester king funk, and a vinous note are evident as well.

Taste: Sour blueberry is strong up front, hints of sweet malts and a sprinkling of crackers too. The unripe strawberries in the nose play a surprisingly important role in the taste as well, right up there with the blueberries. The funk native to Jester King beers of course is present here too, along with the same vinous note from the nose. The beer could have been a lot more sour (I was scared it would be mouth-puckering), and the use of a small portion red sour base (RU55) along with the pale sour base used in all other fruited sours (Das Uberkind) was a smart decision definitely upping the complexity of the flavor profile.

Mouthfeel: Slightly lower carb than most other Jester King sours, but not by much. Quite dry, with a crisp, clean flavor that doesn't linger for long.

Overall: My list of "favorite Jester King fruited sours" is quickly expanding into a list that might as well be "All Jester King fruited sours." Knowing the difficulty of making a blueberry sour, and knowing that the blueberry flavors will be much more subtle than, say, raspberries, this is an expertly crafted ale which shows the skill Jester King has with this style. Up there with Atrial, MvB, and Aurelian in my book. I had had a Blabaer 2013 just a few weeks earlier and, personally, this blew it out of the water.

Glad I finally got to try this, but I must say I was very disappointed considering the incredible fruited sours found in JK's portfolio. The color was great, and the beer is definitely very pretty. The aroma is pretty good as well, a fair amount of blueberry, but not overwhelming. The flavor is fairly one-note, however, and lacks the punch that I normally associate with the JK 500mL fruited sours. If you told me this was more of a La Vie-style second runoff brew, I'd have no trouble believing that. Ultimately good but not great.

Poured into Colour 5 chalice.

Very pretty cran/grape juice appearance. Fizzy small head that settles to nothing.

Aroma is unsweetened blueberry pie filling, faint muskiness, fruit leather, grape juice, and cranberry jam.

Taste is clean, fleeting, and delicate. Blueberry purée, cranberry, some white grape juice tartness, toned down wood notes, and a faint Flanders like leatheriness.

Body is light with low carbonation. Drinks almost like a juice. Tart but not sour. Clean finish with an acidic little poke that doesn't disrupt anything.

Overall a very tasty brew by Jester King. Fruit forward like most of them. Toned down funk and acid levels make for an easy drinking, summeresque brew.

L: Pours a dark blue/purple color
S: blueberries and currants, a sweet but funky nose on this
T: super fresh blueberries, a nice lingering tart finish on this
F: a good amount of carbonation, leaves a nice dry fruit finish on the pallet
O: I do not now JK does it, but their fruit sours have such an amazing fresh fruit taste. This beer is like eating the fruit right from the bush! loved it

Review from notes taken Fall 2014:

Served on-draught into stemware at Jester King. Cost was $8 USD per 8oz pour.

HEAD: None. Just a quarter finger's worth of a floating ring of foam, pinkish white in colour. Okay thickness. Not much creaminess or froth. Not the full delicate soft head that would be ideal, and indicative perhaps of undercarbonation. No lacing adheres to the sides of the glass as the head recedes.

BODY: Deep sanguine colour. Certainly not blue (if that's what one is expecting). Ripe and appealing, but opaque. No yeast/lees or sediment are/is visible within.

Appears undercarbonated. It's a good look for a fruited sour, and I'm looking forward to trying it, but there's room for improvement and it could be more inviting.

AROMA: Ripe berry with some accompanying light tartness, rich oak, touches of lactic and wild bacterial sourness (about a 5-6/10 in terms of intensity of sourness), red grapeskin, a kiss of almost tannic must, dampened wood, and yes, a hint of blueberry - but it isn't the juicy rich evocative blueberry one would find in a world-class execution of a blueberry sour ale.

More sourness and more blueberry would help this improve, but it's generally enticing as-is.

No overt alcohol or off-notes are detectable.

TASTE: Muted, with a terribly brief flavour duration and an extremely reticent flavour profile which barely commits to the blueberry flavour at all. Its timid 4-5/10 sourness leaves much to be desired, and what sourness is present feels clean and clinical as though a lactobacillus culture was dropped into stainless steel; this beer lacks true spontaneous fermentation intangibles, subtle wild characteristics, microflora, etc.

I do dig the lightly powdery blueberry and the light tartness, but far more of both flavours is needed.

I find no overt alcohol, off-flavour, or overt yeasty flavour.

It's definitely well-balanced, but I wish its flavours were more intense and assertive. Depth of flavour is lacking.

As it is, it's actually a bit plain, lacking intricacy and bringing little in terms of commitment to its ingredients.

That said, I do quite like it and it improves as it comes to temperature. Any malt foundation disappears beneath the berry notes, grape skin, and barely perceptible oak/dampened oak barrel flavours, but I imagine something like 2-row, pale malt, and maybe even wheat were used.

TEXTURE: Ripe, lightly powdery, a bit acidic, smooth, plump, and wet. I hoped for more of a La Vie En Rose texture with a delicate soft mouthfeel, a fragility, and a lighter body. This is a bit heavyhanded on the palate, but it's not unrefreshing.

The higher ABV might be holding it back; it's up there for a fruited sour ale. Slightly undercarbonated.

This texture complements the tasty pretty well, but doesn't elevate the beer as a whole or accentuate specific flavours. Jester King has done far better in the past. I want more acidity, more softness, more fragility, and less heft.

OVERALL: Very drinkable for its highish ABV, but it's not as drinkable as the very best expressions of the style (including Jester King's own). For a blueberry sour, it could really use more blueberries and more sourness. Still, I'd happily get it again were it not for its high pricetag and it joins the ranks of Jester King's always good fruited sours.

Appearance: It has a nice ruby red color to it. It has a nice light pink head that dies down somewhat fast and leaves next to no lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of blueberries, berry funk, some tartness and very faint notes of oak.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has a nice mix of berries, (blueberries predominantly), fruity funk, some tartness and faint oak.

Mouthfeel: It has a low-med carbonation with a nice overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied by good flavors and aromas. Another solid beer by Jester King!
