Proof that jester king has fanboys. Tastes similar to a messed up Fantome. Not sure if i can finish my glass. Wonder what jester king was trying to accomplish here. Horrible

Sample at Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen 2017, red session. Aroma has rauchbier style notes with ham and toasted malts. Taste is dry, smoky, a bit astringent but easy drinking overall.

Pours a very hazed amber/brpwn with 3+ fingers of sand colored head. Stays hazy, great head retention & lacing

S: Smokeyness & sourness once warm

T: Slight sourness, smokeyness & dryness& a little grassyness up front. Sourness, red grapeskins, pears & leafy hops & dryness as this warms, along with more smokeyness. Finishes sour, smokey with a slight brown sugar sweetness & woody dryness

MF: Medium body, subdued carbonation

This is okay, but doesn't really make me I'm really missing out by not getting their beers on a regular basis. This is a mashup of style that misses many marks, a little disjointed

Pours a hazy brown with a thick, rocky khaki head. Smells of roasted malt, toast, earthy hops, and a faint hint of smoke. Taste is roasty, dry. The earthy yeast and smoke come out much stronger than in the nose. Moderately full body with stinging carbonation and some acid on the tongue. Overall an interesting take on an altbier, but I'm not in love with it.

Bottle from Rare Beer of the Month Club
Dark clean amber color with light tan head and limited lacing, smell is sweet, caramel, dried stone fruit, and sour smokiness, taste is sweet up front transitioning into slightly sour and a big cloud of smoke and malt, this beer is medium bodied with a dry bitter finish. Probably the best smokey beer i have had, like drinking a crisp fireplace, excellent. Great with some Patsy's Pizza!

750 ml bottle, Batch #2 - 01/06/2016. Acquired a bottle of this stuff as part of a shipment of Jester King beers to the Chicagoland area. "Farmhouse altbier with smoked malt" per the description.

Poured into a Unibroue Maudite snifter.

A - Pours a dark brownish-ruby body. Good color, with a finger of frothy khaki head with excellent staying power that leaves lots of good fluffy sheets of lacing. Looks very nice. Continues to pour darker and browner as the bottle drinks on.

S - Aroma is crisp & clean. Notes of earthiness & tartness from the wild yeast / bacteria comes through nicely. A bit of dark malt type presence, but I detect no smoke on the nose. Hint of apples / cola / indistinct spice.

T - The smoked barley malt flavor appears on the nose, but is quickly overtaken by the tart earthiness of the wild yeast / native Texas bacteria. Definitely has the Jester King sense of terroir going on. Notes of nutty / dark / brown malts buried in there. Finishes dry, earthy, bitter, & bacterial. Slight hint of metallics.

M - Feel is smooth, crisp, clean. Medium-bodied, with good carb. Dry on the finish, with lots of earthy bacterial / yeast presence on the end. Lightly tart.

Overall, interesting stuff, though the smoke is probably the lesser feature to the yeast / bacteria presence. Definitely retains the sense of terroir / authentic Jester King / Texas Hill Country flavor. Very unique stuff; am always pleased to try new Jester King, and i look forward to trying more.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into tulip. Batch #2 - 01.07.2016
A: Pours a dark brown hue with 2+ inch thick tan head. Good retention.
S: Spearmint and other sweet herbs, white pepper, mild caramel malt, dry toasted grain, and a hint of brown sugar.
T: Grassy hay, sweet light caramel malt, spearmint, white pepper, brown sugar, and smoked malt. With warming, vanilla and almond notes emerge. The further I got into this one, the bitter component became a bit too strong.
M: Light-medium body. Sweet and mildly dry. Astringent herbal component. Some lingering smoked malt notes on the palate.
D: I liked the interplay between the smoky malt and the sweet herbal and light pepper notes. A solid--and definitely interesting--brew from a brewery that never disappoints. However, it left me wanting a bit more...more body, more darker notes in the taste...something.
