Collaboration with Tired Hands Brewing Company

Cloudfeeder was brewed on March 21, 2016 at Jester King with Hill Country well water, malted barely, malted spelt, oats and hops. It was fermented with our mixed culture of brewers yeast and native yeast and bacteria harvested from the land and air around our brewery. It was then refermented with Pennsylvania honey and zest and juice from Texas limes and grapefruits, and dry hopped with Nelson Sauvin and Simcoe hops. It was packaged on April 11, 2016 and 100% naturally conditioned in bottles, kegs, and casks. At the time of packaging, the beer was 3.8% alcohol by volume, 4.2 pH, 51 IBU, and had a gravity of 1.001 (0.25 degrees Plato).

Batch #2: 4.5 %.

Here's a score from Thanksgiving 2021.

Pours a lively golden yellow color, light cloudiness perhaps there is a joke in there about the namesake. 1/2" white head. Seems on point for style in the appearance. The aroma hit a light saison yeast, humid mustiness, lemon tartness, hay, dying grass (lemongrass would suffice too I guess). Totally didn't pull any Nelson hops out of this. Weird selection in that regard. I guess that the Nelson hops might have been that mustiness in the aroma. Just hits different when not in an ipa perhaps.

The taste brings more of the citrus adjunct to the forefront, the lemon lime grapefruit notes become perceptible, but countered by the spelt and oat aspect giving that hazy ipa like tempering of Simcoe hops and potentially bitter citric rind. Still lots of hay tartness. Honey doesn't come out in the taste, but seems to contribute to the slightly dry mouth feel.

All in all, its another pretty good and unique saison from Jester King. This time, helped out by Tired Hands.

10oz pour at The Blind Tiger. It's listed as Cloudfeeder #2, which I'm assuming is just a second batch, and therefore not treated as a different beer on BA.

Pours slightly hazy, very pale yellow, one finger of very dense head. Smell is very tart, white grapes and grape must, a little grassy.

Taste is leaning substantially toward saison/farmhouse. Lots of funk and barnyard, lime/lime tartness. Very delicate flavor.

Mouthfeel is super light, airy, and dry. Overall, this is very interesting and also good. Remained very soft throughout my drinking it, but the bitterness did build, while still maintaining that "delicateness" I mentioned.

750 mL bottle. Clear golden with an ample head. Smells of honey and lime, then doughy bread with brett and earthy yeast. Lightly funky. Tastes of equal parts doughy bread and lime tartness up front. That's the only tang, though. Brett, honey, and earthy yeast. Light but not watery. Well carbonated. Delicious.

Batch #2 March 2020

Pours an unfiltered yellow straw (About 4 SRM) with a decent head with slight weak retention but great lacing. Pineapple and grass cuttings on the nose. Initial taste brings more pineapple, honeydew, a slight burnt herbal note. A little honey sweet linger with floral notes to round out a layered mouthfeel.

I was just sitting outside having dinner (bangers & mash, sauerkraut and beans) and drinking cloudfeeder batch #2 a Saison/Farmhouse Ale from Jester King, ABV 4.50%. It is brewed with barley, oats, Pennsylvania honey, grapefruit juice, lime juice, zest, and hops. It was a bit thin to

really be a top notch Saison, but overall the flavors were very nicely put together. It is a great hot weather Saison.

Look: clear light yellow with a thick white head

Aroma: honey, citrus, grassy hops

Taste: The flavor is sweet, honey, grapefruit juice, some mild grassy hops.

Body/Overall: light body, easy drinking, thirst quenching

a really cool collaborative beer, interesting on a number of levels, and a real treat to have on tap at finns manor. its not the prettiest beer to look at, a little more suspended sediment than i need, even in the style, and not as much head as it looks like it should have, sort of creamy on the top, but short. the aroma is great though, juicy limes and wild yeast take the lead right away, but there is a lot else going on. its interesting on the grain front, i like the use of spelt in here, and the oats too, that accounts for some of the interesting bready grainy flavors here, and definitely some of the textural creaminess. a cool base for citrus, which can cut through even fluffy malt bases pretty well, so they were smart to build it up. the grapefruit is behind the lime in flavor too, more zesty than juicy there, but a perfect transition from the fruit in the middle to the brett and acidic tang in the finish. as wild as it is sour, but not too much of either, its the classic jester king mixed culture profile. what i am missing a little is the nelson hops. these are pretty darn distinct, but they seem lost a little in the beer, like they could have been ramped up or the simcoe could have been cut out, its more of a generic hoppy than i am used to from the very unique nelson varietal. dry and well carbonated though, and retaining some of the body from the grain, this is clever beer and for the most part very well executed. always special to drink beers from breweries like this that dont come around very often. process and ingredient intensive brew has paid off this time!

edit: had a batch two bottle and found it even better than the draft experience with the first one. this is clearer, more refined looking, and the nelson is not hiding anymore, it almost leads the way with the citrus. a 2020 bottle a couple years old still, but this drinks crazy fresh, herbal, radiant, and summery, a gorgeous and delicate table beer that sounds on paper almost like too much, but drinks cohesive and easy and even refreshing, pretty amazing how much of the honey comes through too, even though this is super dry. an even better drinking experience than i had with batch one, and i loved it back then. raising the taste and overall scores here to include how epic this was the second time around. one of my favorites from an epic day of drinking jester king beers!
