Canned 9/6/23. “Time, people, places” stamped on the bottom of the can

I’m loving all the Jester King I’ve been able to try lately thanks to Tavour. They seem to get a bunch of the JK releases on there and I usually end up grabbing them. This one sounds fun, just a straight forward Saison refermented with blackberries. Let’s get into it

Pours a cloudy reddish purple with a finger of pinkish brown head that fades to a ring and leaves decent lacing

The nose is surprisingly gentle here but that’s not a knock in any way. I’m picking up on aromas of jammy blackberry, lemon juice, earthy wheat, sweet honey, raspberry candy, doughy malt, and light apricot

It’s also quite gentle in taste but still very good. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting tart raspberry, lemon zest, vanilla, bready malt, earthy wheat, light stone, and lime zest. The swallow brings notes of jammy blackberry, earthy wheat, wet hay, lemon zest, bready malt, and wildflower honey

A light medium body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a crisp beer. Finishes mostly dry with a nice earthiness

This one is straightforward and easy drinking. Had to give it a bump in the overall since it’s just so cohesive

Pours a fizzy foamy 1/2 finger pink head with good retention, soapy lacing, hazy rosy reddish color

Nose is quite perfumey, lots of blackberry/raspberry bramble, some tart acidic lacto creamy funk, some doughy wheat like, a bit of buttery diacetyl little spice notes

Taste brings more tart funk, creamy tart lacto with some mild sour acidity, little doughy wheat notes and bready, touch of farmhouse spice notes, plenty of bramble, juicy blackberry, tart berry, hint of tannin, touch of bitterness late, a touch flemmy on the finish

Mouth is med bod, med to a bit higher frothy carb, fair acidity

Overall a nice easy drinking tart blackberry slight sour beer, enjoyable and nicely done

been saving this one awhile, batch 2 from 2017, so cool to have this right after an old bottle of nocturn chrysalis, this uses the second use berries from that one, much like the le vie en rose uses the spent berries from atrial. this has a very light pink tone, some soft frosted haziness to it, almost no head at all, and is a little less expressive on the carbonation and bottle conditioning than their best beers, it sags slightly in mouthfeel. it seems like the blackberries have given up a little more of themselves in the original beer than the raspberries did in that one, the fruit is really light on the nose here, almost a generic rather than blackberry specific fruitiness, hints of raspberry and cherry to my actually. the funk is still there, and this kind of hits like a natural rose wine to me, grapey and wild and tannic. the flavor is pleasant but subtle, especially right after the nocturn bottle, more of the ghost of the blackberries than their soul, again quite vinous, tart on the ferment but pretty bretty and wild too, i can feel a little wheat in the base i think and i like having some body set against the acidity. subtle hibiscus, cranberry, and red currant to close. perhaps i let this bottle age a little too long, its not faded but its not bright either. i hope to try a little newer vintage next time. i love this series of first and second use fruit beers though, such a cool way to understand these fruits and how they respond in different conditions and beers, just super educational and fun!

Cellared a year. Cherry red pour with visible carbonation and a small white ring. Tart jammy blackberry with rustic grains, mild brett funk and earth aromas. Taste has more a blackberry tart juice complexion with again a rustic grain, almost like a buckwheat, with elevated yeast, milder brett and funk, light lemon essence whispers in. Feel is tart yet refined, lighter bodied, decent carb, and has a decent grainy chew. A more rustic and fainter nocturn chrysalis, I personally prefer NC, but found this to be beautiful as well

I am drinking Grim Harvest batch #4, a Farmhouse Ale from Jester King, ABV 6.90%. It was brewed in October 2020. It is brewed with spent Marion blackberries from Jester King's Nocturn Crysalis batch #7, which I guess is the same as leftovers in the beer world. But I'd rather have leftovers from Jester King than drink most other beers, it is still great. The label is so dark it is difficult to read even in daylight, but it is about death not being a tidy thing, which I presume is true. It is light and easy drinking. The temperature shot up from way below freezing to above 70 so I'm thirsty. It is thirst quenching.

Look: red with a thin white head

Aroma: blackberries

Flavor: The flavor is wheat crackers, slightly tart blackberries, mild citrus and dry funk.

Body/Overall: light body but not watery, fresh, crisp

22oz bottle into a pint glass. Batch #3, bottled August 2019, so about 3 months old.

Pours with a reddish body and a small white head which persists as a thin ring and faint covering.

Aroma is a tart one.

The blackberry taste comes through, cutting the funk really well. It's tart, slightly sour, with a pepper hit now and then.

Mouth around medium, finish tart, lightly funky, and dry.

Overall, a decent wild ale taste, billed as a saison. I'm really intrigued by the two Jester King beers I've had. Keep 'em coming Tavour. (Or JK could just distribute throughout PA??)
