Billed as a grape sour, yet I found grape to be more present in smell and supporting in taste. So let's start with the smell, grape jam with peppery yeast, and black currants. The taste has the grapes fade to background to give way to drier funk, some brett, full black currant, dark cherry, lemon, and oak. Very drinkable and flavorful without being overly acidic.

2017 vintage, amazing stuff, although somewhat lighter on the fruit than i was anticipating knowing some of their other wine grape beers. cool to find it on a beer menu too, i didnt think that existed anywhere with these beers, but count on the avenue pub in new orleans to have some gems! it has a frosted pink look to it, not as ruby as i has it in my head that it would be, but a bright color to it and lots of carbonation activity too, even though it doesnt hold much head. smells like lambic first, more mature and complex than some of the other spon blends i have had in the past, lots of wood, aged hops, white wheat, and developed funkiness, bretty and wild before its sour, but my mouth waters too. a clean bacterial sting up front in the flavor, followed by the funk, which is there all the way through this. the fruit hits in the middle, red wine of course, cool tannins bringing out more of the wood as well, and notes of plum and raspberry to it, but also rose petal and hibiscus or something a bit more floral, still delicate, and definitely a product of the added fruit, an awesome wrinkle. i dont find it all that fruity, which i kind of like, the base beer is awesome, and i think allowing it to be its full self with the fruit being secondary is a good decision. the grapes give this a lot of depth and complexity too, a light sweetness in the middle set against the apex of the sourness, and then a springtime freshness in the finish which is neat in such a mature beer. awesome fermentation profile, thats the first thing, but overall this is killer beer, jovially carbonated and not overly priced for what it is. i was really pleased with this, and it has me excited for some of the other fruited spon variants that exist in my cellar...

Bottle pour at the source, hazy light red, slight foam, no lacing. Nose highlights the grape and wood along with the funk. Taste is a melding of beer and wine that is quite extraordinary. Sourness above moderate, finishes funky and feels mildly creamy.

Bottle pour at Jester King in Austin, TX.

This one pours a slightly pretty purple-ish pink, with a small head and a little bit of lacing.

This smells pretty jammy, with grape skin, cherry, prickly funk, and oak.

The taste is similar, with a darker and jammier grape flavor, oak, lemon acidity, and some cherry and black currant.

This is light bodied, crisp and clean, with a really high level of drinkability.

This is a really high quality use of grapes.

I wanted to loves this, but overall its a bit lack luster. Retains some of the nicer spon elements, with a touch of grape, but the flavors of the wine grapes are very muted overall. Kind of takes away from teh spon base. Lowish carb. Def the worst spon variant so far
