Full-flavored, dry, champagne-like farmhouse ale, matured in oak whiskey and wine barrels with multiple strains of wild yeast and bacteria. Look for lots of tropical fruit and funk, with a sour, earthy edge.

Date: April 2021

I enjoy the funky side of Jester King; thus, I purchased this beer. I used a tulip glass; the temperature was 44 degrees. The pour created a frothy off-white head with dismal retention. No lacing was left on the glass after the quick dissipation. The color charts around SRM 15, deep amber with rusty orange hues. The beer is clear; I was surprised not to see any yeast particles.
When I pried the top off, funky barnyard and orange aromas emitted. Nosing the beer, I detected apple cider, herbal, a bit of wine, a horse blanket, a hint of pineapple, oak, straw, lightly toasted malts, and bready.
The flavors are oak, pineapple, apple cider, lemons, herbal, floral, horse blankets, bready, barnyard funk, lightly toasted malts, leather, earthiness, and oranges.
The mouthfeel is tannic and sour. The body is medium, medium carbonation, and lasting finish.
The best thing I enjoyed about this beer, it developed on the palate. The beer was not bracingly bitter or sour to start with. The sourness and other flavors evolve to a remarkable finale. The scary thing about this beer the ABV is well hidden. An impressive feat and tasty beer.

750ml bottle from last night’s share. Pours out a cloudy opaque brown with a small beige head. Aroma is initially some light fruity notes, tartness also comes through, as does some of the barrel. Taste is initially the sourness, but behind that lingers the fruity tastes and a bit of savory spice.

750ml bottle, Batch #10, poured into a Hill Farmstead oversized wine glass. Enjoyed on 11.09.19, reviewed from Tasting Journal.

The beer pours an orange amber color, cloudy with a soapy white head, modest retention and spotted lacing. The aroma is nice, strong stone fruits, candied apricots, some cherry and plum with something more like raspberry, funk and buggy cultures that bring out the oak, sweet amber grain and a hearty dose of boozy barrel. The flavors are solid, lots of stone fruits, from peach to plum, berry forward cultures, a candied and sugary quality with lots of caramel and amber malt with big time booze, especially as it warms, lots of spirit and heat. The mouthfeel is good, coating and smooth with a heavier medium body, tart and prickly at the finish with an assertive alcohol warmth.

Verdict: A good wild ale from Jester King. A bit all over the place and the booziness of the beer doesn't work for me. That being said, the funkiness and stone fruit elements of the beer are pleasant and quite enjoyable.

Blend #10 - April 2018. Really tasty. Very good farmhouse style. Dark golden brown cloudy color, dime high thick foam that dissipated quickly, minimal lacing. Smell is funky notes of brett, slightly tart. Straight up sour taste with notes of tart raspberry and apple. Definite presence of the wine and whiskey barreling. Medium bodied, mouth watering, boozy. It’s no Russian River sour, but better than rated.

Billed as a sour strong ale, and it was awesome. The smell was fascinating with aromas of both barrels, boozy whiskey and vinous elements abound, brett, orange, lemon, papaya, barn yard funk, caramel, pear, melon, pervasive oak, and this finishing apple cider vinegar that was floral and actually really pleasant. The taste wasn't as seamless, but was even more complex adding in grape, fuller apple, vanilla, lingonberry, and a lingering light acidity. Feel was smooth and somewhat filmy, but full of wood tannins and a slightly acidic and sour finish. Really impressed, artful, creative, and complex
