For starters I love the art work on this bottle (received as an extra from @hambone85) which made it peak my interest right away.

Appearance: hazy yellow with 3 fingers of bright white that quickly disappears.

Smell: citrus, yeast, & a little funk.

Taste: just like the smell, citrus, tropical fruit, and funkiness.

Poured from the bottle into a wine glass.

Buttery yellow opaque color, with a sense of lemon slightly. A bleach white sudsy head about two fingers on creation but dissolves quickly. Sort of looks like light tang in a glass slightly.

Real impressive nose, with tropical mango notes and light juicy fruit. Hints at some faint grain and dough a little as well. Not much brett quality or funk.

Palate comes with a very light peach fruit. Good dough finish but some of the fruit character hinting on the nose isn't coming through as much. A little bit of wet watery wet grain finish, but with a hint of tartness and very light.

Hardly any hint of barrel aging character, but an impressive nose. However, this comes out more like a berliner weisse or something strangely to me.

Bottled nearly 1 year ago. Batch #14 - July 31, 2013

It has been sitting in a closet in Florida for the better part of a year. The temperature never got above 78, or below 60... Let's just say I've been trying to let the sourness speed up with out keeping it in a temp. controlled setting.

Ap - Gold. Almost no head. It seemed like this would have a thick billowy head after I popped the cap and it hissed like hell. There is still a slight hint of lace.

Ar - Dust, tropical fruit, tart apples/lemons.

T - Dry, bretty tartness. Subtle apple, kumquats, and tropical fruits. This is better than I expected!

M - The mouthfeel is a little too thin, oily, and under-carbonated for my liking. Otherwise the beer finishes great and wanting more.

Aromas scream of funky saison spiciness, lemon grass, sour apple cider. Flavors of lemon tartness, hay, mild biscuit, and a distinct mild hops finish. Very crisp, wonderful tartness, and awesome funkiness. At 4.5% it is easily something that can be enjoyed all night

Look: Pours with huge, creamy, medium sized bubbles, light off-white head. Fast, good retention with sticky lacing coming down. Creamy, very thin, thick layer stays on top, leaves lots of lacing. Very cloudy, dark yellow with light orange hue.

Smell: Light to medium lemon, apple sour. Subtle, but fine leather funk - makes it warm and fuzzy. Fresh cut grass, bit of hay, also some light tropical feel.

Taste: Starts with light lactic sour, goes to very light, bread (and light burned crust) middle, missing a bit of malt character here, but ends with a pleasant and satisfying finish - light noble hop bitterness with medium sour. Funk goes down a bit, but more pineapple and some medicinal notes.

Mouthfeel: Light body, crisp and dry - very fresh.

Overall: Light and fresh, complex enough, too bad its too expensive for a go-to beer on a hot summer day - that would be it's perfect niche.

Poured from a 750mL bomber into a Jester King stemmed glass. Thanks nedvalton for this one!

A- Pours a mellow, slightly hazy, orange body with a small white somewhat fizzy head that reduces pretty slowly to leave leggy lacing. Love the label (+.25)

S- The saison qualities are immediately apparent.. belgian spices, citrus, fruityness, bananas and tart apples. Funky yeast, barnyard, oak and some sour lactic.

T- The first thing to touch the tongue is tart citrus & apple, slightly sour lactic bacteria, on the follow through is a belgian spiciness, some funk, resinous hoppy notes, slight oakyness and caramel. The aftertaste is slightly bland.

M- Thin with medium-high carbonation.

I always love trying Jester King beers.. you never know what you'll get. This one was definitely enjoyable, but I wish there was a little more flavor and/or body there. Given today's sour market, I expect a little more funkyness/sourness in an American Wild Ale. Glad I got to try it though.

750ml bottle. Batch #14 July 31, 2013. Served in a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a golden orange color with 1 finger of a white head that dissipates to a thin coating and collar. Body is very hazy but translucent.

Smell: Lemon, fresh cut grass, tropical fruit, spices, slight floral and bready notes as well.

Taste: Lemongrass, doughy, citrus, green apple, peppercorns with slight hints of funk, pineapple and lacto. Just a twinge of sourness. Quite a bit of hop flavor but almost no accompanying bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied and crisp. Finishes dry with a light tart sourness. Super refreshing and easy to drink.

Overall: My first Jester King beer and I'm relatively impressed. Priced a bit too high for what it is, but still worth a try at least once. Make this cheaper and put it in 6 packs and I'd buy this all the time.

A: Pale orange color with a heavy haze, subtle white head that dissolves into a ring with very thin patches of foam.

S: Yeast, tart apples, farm hay, funky bacteria similar to brett saisons I've had .

T: Tart yeast, green apples, pears, and sweet bready malts. I do pick up on some oak and it blends very well with apple notes. It has a nice dry finish but does leave a faint funk and aromatic herbal hop notes.

M: Medium feel with pleasant carbonation. Finishes well and briefly leaves a few interesting aromatic notes behind.

O: This is a unique saison. It's easy to drink with just enough tart and funk flavors to enjoy without overwhelming you like some sour saisons. It has interesting fruit, oak, and herbal notes. This was an old bottle (8 months) that I sampled and tasted a little stale but I still really liked it and will be getting it again.

Quick review from written notes, 2012 vintage.

Bright gold color with minimal foam or lace.
Lightly funky aroma of wet hay.

Tart lemon and grapefruit rind in the taste, dry finish, very clean and well attenuated.
Overall this held up well and was very easy drinking. Thanks Dan!

This one pours a hazy orange-amber color with a bone white head that dissipates leaving just wisps of foam around the glass. The aroma is of tart apples. It has kind of just the one note. The taste is crisp and dry with hints of apple and just a touch of sourness and then a oaky dryness. There is just a touch of bitterness at the finish. There is a nice light effervescence. It is lively and crisp while being creamy. A really great mouthfeel.

This is definitely not your typical saison, but I like it. I wish I had another bottle to try in some warmer weather.

The appearance is bright and bubbly with a fizzing froth. Lots of tangy Apple, pear and cider like tones hit the nose but the flavor is more tangy and a touch less flavorful. Plenty of sprite orchard fruitiness just subdued a little. This is very good, plenty tasty and an easy sweet treat.

Pours a bit cloudy, not very exciting.

Smell is very nice - big fruit, strong sage, rotting citrus, strong grapefruit/orange peel along with - sir funk.

Taste is dry, funky, off sour - lovely saison - barrel Oakey wine notes.

A solid sour saison, great mix of yeasty funk , hops and big fruit.

Deep golden with amber highlights. Honestly the color reminds me of apple juice. Thin layer of minuscule bright white head. A bit hazy with very vibrant carbonation bubbles throughout. I get pears,apples ,earthiness,and peppery notes with an overall sweetness in the aroma. Mouth is highly carbonated,crisp,and refreshing. The front of the palate is sweet with pears and green apples. I get a bit of tartness in the finish from the souring bacteria which is a good contrast.

Appearance: Medium orange with some gold and honey tones - hazy, lightly cloudy - pours with a medium cap, fades to a few wisps - leaves some nice lacing

Smell: Very aromatic and decidedly Jester King - some really nice funky notes - some citrus (orange, grapefruit) and some tropical notes - a ton of wood, and some nice, earthy aromas - some other light fruits, with some light malts in the background

Taste: Nicely funky flavors and some tropical highlights - some grass and straw notes - some orange and grapefruit - vaguely tropical fruits - some tartness, and some earthy sourness - musty, damp, lactic - floral, with a ton of wood - some pale malts as well - finishes pretty clean

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nicely carbonated, smooth, clean

Overall: Das Jester King consistency

This beer probably would be mind-blowing if I haven't had any barrel-aged Jester King beers in the past. But I have. This is very similar to some other (great) Jester Kings beers. Some nice funk, fruit, and wood flavors. Great stuff, even if it reminds me of other beers.

Appearance: Hazed goldish orange peach. Small bright-white head. Drops to a tiny cap and small bubbly collar. Splotches of lacing.

Smell: Jester King yeast. Woody, earthy, a touch dirty, and some minty touches. Layers of funky barnyard. Damp and musty. Grass, hay, and flower petals. A touch of sour, the complete concoction - lacto, pedio, brett, offers a complimentary backbone. Peach, wood, some lingering pine bitterness. Nicely hopped. Some grapefruit rind and juice. Slightly bready with some dough. Light cracker snap. Slight peppery esters.

Taste: Pear and yeast. Earthy and decidedly floral. Some esters, banana and a soft peppery spiciness. A touch of peach and apple skin. A touch of dough and bread. Pale malt sweetness. Slightly tart, with hints of lacto, pedio, and mostly brett. A touch of white wine and grape skin. Surprisingly clean. Hay, grass, and a touch of lemon. A very faint touch of oak. A bit more aggressively hopped than other Jester King saisons/sours.

Mouthfeel: Relatively light body with a medium to high carbonation. A touch dry on the finish with an overall crisp feel. Nice and clean.

Overall: Children are our future, but maybe not this child.

Very similar to other Jester King saisons with a touch of sour and an assertive dry-hop. The house yeast is delightful, so that's cool.

Light, straw colored body with a big fluffy white head that gives some bright floral notes on the nose. Well made saison that's completely in balance with just the right amount of tartness. You could drink this for awhile on a warm day and not need to go elsewhere. Definitely recommend as a very interesting take on a saison.

Another saison from the darling brewery of Texas. Refrigerated for a few days prior to opening. 4.5% ABV confirmed per the label. OG: 1.035. FG: 1.002. IBU: 16. 1 pint 9.4 fl oz brown glass bottle with appealing label art and fantastic cap art (on a branded pry-off pressure cap) acquired at a local HEB Grocery and served into Cantillon stemware.

Reviewed live. Expectations are above average; I like their sours but I've yet to be blown away by one of their saisons. Reviewed as a saison because it clearly identifies as such on the label.

Served cold and allowed to warm slightly over the course of consumption.

The beer does rise after I pop the cap; it may be overcarbonated. Expect a gusher if it hasn't been refrigerated.

A: No bubble show forms as it's poured.

Pours a one finger wide head of white colour. Okay creaminess and thickness. No real frothiness. Head retention is poor - about 40 seconds. Little lacing as the head recedes.

Body colour is a nontransparent translucent hazy bright yellow-copper. No yeast particles are visible.

Overall, it's definitely within style conventions and is pretty standard fare for a saison.

Sm: Plenty of doughy and bready yeast character. Lemon zest, lemongrass, lemon esters. Lightly funky farmhouse yeast. White wine skin/wine must. Straw. Heavily grassy. A bit lactic. I wouldn't call it sour. Floral hops are definitely present. Timid green apple. A kiss of lime. Maybe some white pepper, but nowhere near as much as I'd want in a good saison. Seems to have decent complexity. A pleasant aroma of mild to moderate strength. Not fantastic for the style, but within conventions. I'm looking forward to trying it.

No alcohol is detectable.

T: Green apple, lemon zest, lemongrass, lemon esters, floral hops, clean doughy/bready yeast, buried unevocative white pepper, a blip of lime, brettanomyces-induced light funkiness, straw/hay, crackery malts, and timid white wine must/skin. Where is the purported oak barrel? Nowhere to be found.

Pilsner malts. Has a blip of sourness, but by no means is it truly a *sour* saison. A biteen salty, actually. I'd like a bit more of a dried fruit presence. Good sweetness/bitterness balance.

It's complex enough, but the style demands more. It could also be more subtle. Well-balanced for what it is; I quite like it. Depth of flavour is below average for the style; saisons may have the most depth of any style out there and this beer doesn't bring enough to the table. Average duration and intensity of flavour.

Overall, it's pretty good stuff - especially for an American-brewed saison.

Mf: Spritzy, smooth, wet, and crisp. A biteen acidic. Well-carbonated; bottle conditioning was an excellent choice. Has good body and thickness. Supports the flavour profile and complements it well, though it doesn't seem custom-tailored to it. Good presence on the palate. It's somewhat soft.

Not oily, harsh, boozy, hot, astringent, or gushed.

Dr: Quite drinkable, though if I had it blind I'd guess the ABV was actually higher than it is. It's pretty good stuff for an American saison, but it's not quite up to par with the best Belgian offerings. I'll easily kill this bottle alone. A damn solid offering from Jester King, but I doubt I'd get it again given that it's priced right around Fantome's price point (as an import, no less). If only they'd make the price a bit more reasonable, I'd indulge much more often. I'd recommend it to friends and trade partners. Well worth trying, and I'm glad it's a shelf beer here in Texas. But it's far from world-class; this style demands more.

Bottle bought at K&L in Redwood City. Poured into trappist "chalice."

A: Hazy peach-like tint of orange / amber.

S: A bit of brett funk, black pepper, stonefruit.

T: White bread or cookie-dough malt flavor, light sourness with even milder horseblanket funk, peaches. Some hoppy bitterness in the finish that sticks around in the aftertaste.

M: Light-medium body. Moderately effervescent. Very drinkable.

O: Complex, enjoyable, pretty well-balanced. Could be a little less bitter (or at least have a more cirtusy hop profile) to be really excellent.

A - Hazy orange color with a thick, slightly off-white and creamy head that quickly recedes. A little lacing, but still nice.

S - Barnyard, tart lemon and hints of green apple.

T - Nice funky, yeasty Brett flavors with tart citrus and green apple.

M - Nice and dry. Medium carbonation. There was a lot when I opened the bottle, but it settled a bit through the drink.

O - This is just a really interesting beer. A great saison with some wild yeast characteristics that are balanced very well. I could drink this all day, especially when it's hot. Any saison fans should seek this out.

Blend #4. March 2013

Appearance: fast fading head. Tiny bit of lacing. Golden and cloudy, like a glass of grapefruit juice.

Smell: yeasty is the dominate feature here. Followed by tart fruit such as grapefruit (again), green grapes and Granny Smith apples.

Taste: Lots of hops listed on the label in the ingredients, but they are almost non-existent. Tart (bordering on downright sour) is the main player here. Much like the smell I'm picking up on a lot of unripened fruit in a very good way. Yeast plays along well with the sour fruit.

Mouthfeel: starts off nice and juicy, and then the sour aspect kicks in and dries your entire mouth out. Taunting you in to taking another drink. So light and crisp. Maybe this is where the hops have been hiding.

Overall: I wish I would have saved this bottle for a sweltering hot, typical summer day here in St Louis but I don't regret drinking this whatsoever. Tart and dry, yet very refreshing.

A misfit of a beer for sure! With so much complexity and power of flavor- all crammed into a sub 5% beer. Yea, that's odd for sure. But wonderfully odd.

Its strong honey-gold appearance is hazy with unfiltered yeast to ensure bold flavor to come. But after the beer decants with a light, arid and fluffy sandy head- all that settles to a creamy blanket to cap the beer while lacing with intricate patterns. It's a classic Farmhouse look.

Earthy and brisk, the beer's opening aromas are of wet hay, grain, husk and bread crust. A quick follow of lime, tart berries and white grape gives a glimpse into the ester profiles. Balanced by high spice of wood tannin, white pepper, cinnamon, sea air and cumin- the ale shows its earthy tones.

To taste, there's relatively no sweetness as tart acidity greets the palate first. Its dry character is of limes, sour grapes, tart berries, apples, oranges and playfully of cider. All that fruit is met with a balance of peppercorn, clove, cumin, cinnamon and saltwater to round out its middle palate. Closing with weathered oak, cork, and vermouth; the ale is as refreshing as it is characterful.

Dry from start to finish, this characterful and woody taste is equaled with the texture to meet. Its powdery wood texture is spicy with wood, must, dust and dry cracker-like malt. Spicy with pepper, light alcohol, and wood spice- the beer has no option rather to finish like dry wood aged white wines.

Those wines might be falling out of favor in the vineyard community, but the beer world celebrates it hard right now. It appears that the misfit of beer is coming en vogue. You sexy Mo-Fo, you!

Appearance. Pours a nice peachy-gold with almost two fingers of frothy white head, decent retention.

Smell. Spicy saison yeast and orchard fruits, nice fresh oak barrels and sweet fresh hay. Smells really nice.

Taste. Spicy saison yeast at first, then lots of sour peach, lemon and orange. Some grass and a light bitterness in the finish. Nice.

Mouthfeel. Lighter body, medium-low amount of soft carbonation.

Overall. Very nice and refreshing. Loving this type of beer these days and this is no exception.

Bottle: Poured a hazy bright yellow color ale with a medium size head with light retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of tart notes with light barnyard notes is refreshing. Taste is also dominated by tart notes with light oak notes and some barnyard notes that are not overly dominant. Some acidic notes are also discernable but not too the extent where they overwhelmed some of the other flavours. Body is about average with medium to low carbonation. Not the most complex sour beer but very well balanced with acidic notes not taking over all the flavours.
