Jester King / Mikkeller Drink'in The SunbeltJester King / Mikkeller Drink'in The Sunbelt

Brewed by:
Jester King Brewery
Texas, United States

Style: American Pale Wheat Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 3.90%

Availability: Summer

Notes / Commercial Description:
A flavorful, hoppy wheat beer, Drink’in the Sunbelt is the result of the first of two collaborations between Jester King and Mikkeller, the renowned Danish “gypsy brewer”. It takes its inspiration from another light, hoppy, sessionable wheat beer that Mikkeller had previously made, called “Drink’in the Sun”.

Appearance - cloudy golden yellow. Finger and a half head poured into a pilsner glass.

Aroma - one note hops and not really anything else. I'm searching for some sort of fruity English yeast character or something in the nose that tells me there's wheat, but I'm just not finding it.

Taste - very one dimensional. Hoppy and that's it. There's not really anything in the taste that's reminiscent of wheat. Also the hoppiness is quite dull and flat. I get firm bitterness and then just a vague citrus character. The hoppiness reminds me of a stale IPA, something that once maybe had some good character but is now just dull.

Mouthfeel - this was the biggest let down. I was expecting a lot in terms of mouthfeel. A good wheat beer should have a full and fluffy mouthfeel from higher protein, this was just thin. Also the carbonation was lacking.

Overall - I REALLY wanted to like this beer. I like jester king, I like what they say they're about, but this beer is neither unique or interesting. It's dull, boring and very one dimensional.

On tap at The Common Table.

The beer pours a hazy yellow color with a large white head. The aroma is a great mix of wheat with some grassy and citrus hop notes. You can really get the Amarillo hops in the aroma.

The flavor is also very hoppy. There are a lot of citrus and grass notes mixed in with the nice wheat backbone. Light to medium bitterness and very easy to drink. For such a low alcohol beer, it is packed full of flavor.

Medium mouhfeel and medium carbonation. Outstanding.

Big thanks goes out to the BA who sent me this one so I could share this one at a recent tasting! Served from bottle into a Sweetwater 15th Anniversary snifter. Poured a pale golden yellow with a half finger white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, fruit, fruit hop, bubblegum, and wheat. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruit, fruit hop, and wheat. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a decent brew. While this wasn’t a huge stand out for the style it was very easy drinking and enjoyable. There were a lot of refreshing flavors and aromas going on that made it extremely easy drinking. I could this being a rock-solid hang out in the sun by the pool brew. Would definitely suggest this one to others in the future without a doubt.

Pint from tap at the Jester King brewery in Austin. Very fresh.

Pours hazy and milky gold. Light in color, but not even the slightest bit see-through. 1/2" head fades quickly, lacing sticks nicely on glass.

Smell- tropical fruits, pineapple-mango-banana. Sugary sweetness on nose. Slight bready(wheat) smell, but sweet fruits dominate here!

Taste- fruit is so different than the nose. Nice grapefruit/citrus hops. Malty and bready.

Overall, drinks like a glass of juice more than a beer. Surprisingly refreshing.
