A: Black with 3-4 finger mocha head (huge foam).

S: Roasted malt, chocolate, slight coffee, some sourness, dark fruits.

T: Yum. It's delicious. Chocolate, roasted malt, dark fruits (cherries), not much coffee as noted in the nose, belgium yeast adding some funkiness. It tastes like slightly sweeter Deschuttes Obsidian Stout with Belgium yeast added.

M: Very smooth, but not chewy or syrupy much. Relatively high carbonation.

O: Very very good. Note though that this bottle was probably about a year old, aged in my basement cellar.

On tap at the Whip In in Austin.

The beer pours a very dark brown to black color with a small tan head. The aroma is full of chocolate and roasted malt, with a little bit of leather and a few assorted spices mixed in.

The flavor is similar. The chocolate and roasted malt notes are very strong and dominate the initial flavor. As the beer warms up a bit, I start to get a little bit of Belgian yeast and a little bit of brett mixed in to the flavor. There is also a little bit of anise and pepper mixed in.

Thick mouthfeel and low carbonation.

Bottle shared at tasting. Dark pour, tan coarse head. Funky smell, with notes of chocolate and cocoa. Sour with lactic acidity, chocolate, cocoa and coffee. Medium body with high acidity.

Bottle poured into a snifter; modest carbonation with small head. Chocolate and malts are evident to the nose with a softened sweet smell. Chocolate and subtle sweetness on palate- medium balance and the acidity is softened. Well done

Bottle (2012)

Thanks for opening this with me, Nathan!

Black throughout with a moderately sized dark brown head that eventually leaves the glass oily and spotted with lace.

Lots of roast and chocolate elements in the aroma, along with a hint of smoke. I don't pick up any particularly "farmhouse-like" elements.

The flavor too is bold and flavorful: roast, dark and bittersweet chocolate, and a bit of smoke.

Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Slightly chewy.

I like this quite a bit.

Large shared bottle.
There's a lot going on in this big beer. The sweet coffee, dark bread, and chocolate aroma leads to a very different and even more complex flavor. Moderately tart and, I think, even more bitter. I did much prefer the aroma to the flavor.
