Mad MegMad Meg
Notes: “Provision Ale” is a rough translation of the French term “bière de provision“, which was sometimes used to describe special beers that were suitable for extended storage and aging. Brewed from relatively simple, straightforward ingredients, Mad Meg is golden colored and quite strong, at over 9% ABV. Its palate intertwines delicate farmhouse esters with earthy, spicy hops and clean malt flavors. The name “Mad Meg”, refers to a peasant woman from Flemish folklore, also known as “Dulle Griet” or “Dull Gret”, who leads an army of women to pillage hell. She’s famously depicted in Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s 1562 painting by the same name.

First had poured from 25.4-oz. bomber, gift from friend, labeled 8.80 ABV and "BATCH #14 -- 06.16.2015," into TEKU. Not complicated, Mad Meg is appropriate for a rustic, afternoon garden party, with moldy cheese and country pâté.

Pours a very dark golden color with a ton of white head, the smell is full of yeast, barley, grass, and a slight sweetness. Taste is based on the yeast and barley with some more subtle notes added; sweetness, musk, oak, and banana. The feel is almost like a light beer... lots of frothy, easy drinking beer but with lots of flavor. Solid beer.

Poured from the bottle into a medium sized snifter glass.

Deep thick and super creamy white to vanilla colored head. A good clump and cream sticky clingyness as well, with a simple opaque peach orange body. Minimal carbonation, a little frozen in appearance but the head makes up for it along with a solid pretty color. Great looker for a saison.

Classic notes of booming brett funk quality. Mild sour dough sensing a bit, hints of dry earthy spices, sage, thyme. Fresh and clean and impressive.

Palates first sip really hits well. Crisp with a good amount of density, but falls a bit to some stinging novocaine qualities on the finish. Mid palate give lots of brett heat, and a sharp stone fruit but quits after a bit until further sips resume. Repeats bring a bit more burn. but finding apricot and some juiced tropic character does come forth.. Sharp, big and a bit hot. with a big stomach alcohol warmth.

Overall a good saison, but feels like it's about to go overboard and a little out of control. Much of the impressive aromas don't also translate as well on the palate unfortunately.

Poured into a tulip. Like just about every other JK beer I've had, this is overcarbonated.

3.25 A: Murky yellow brown color. Many fingers of foamy white head. Not going to mention retention because it was massively overcarbonated, but much of it did stick to the glass.

3.75 S: LIke JK's other farmhouse brews, this has a ton of herbalness in it. I can pick out specific herbs too, but I don't know what the hell they are called. Also getting a healthy dose of wildflowers, apple orchard, barnyard funk, and dry wood. Finally, plenty of earthiness makes this a dirty, rustic nose.

3.25 T: Tastes like it smells, except that there is too much damn yeast. It was too carbonated to properly decant this, so it has to be figured into the review. Still, it's not too bad. Again, lots of herbalness. Wildflower, apple orchard, barn, wood. Earthy with a mild bitterness.

3.25 M: Medium body (would be lighter with less yeast I presume). Too much carbonation initially that I swirled to a manageable level. Spritzy. Would have been given a better score if it wasn't overcarbed.

3.25 D: It's not a bad brew, but the quality control at JK needs to improve. They need to let their beers finish fermenting before they bottle them.
