“Provision Ale” is a rough translation of the French term “bière de provision“, which was sometimes used to describe special beers that were suitable for extended storage and aging. Brewed from relatively simple, straightforward ingredients, Mad Meg is golden colored and quite strong, at over 9% ABV. Its palate intertwines delicate farmhouse esters with earthy, spicy hops and clean malt flavors. The name “Mad Meg”, refers to a peasant woman from Flemish folklore, also known as “Dulle Griet” or “Dull Gret”, who leads an army of women to pillage hell. She’s famously depicted in Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s 1562 painting by the same name.

Sampled at the Big Texas Beer Fest.
The beer pours a hazy yellow-orange color with a white head. The aroma is fairly complex, with some biscuit, grass, earth and a little bit of tartness and funk. The flavor is very similar. There is a strong Belgian yeast component to the flavor which is complimented nicely by some herb, floral, earth and some light citrus notes. There is also a little bit of tartness, but not near as much as you would get in the sour. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Lazily sparkling clear burnt gold with an impressive meringue-like topping. Letting the head settle down leaves quite the grid of lace.
Smell is like a mix of Saison and Pilsner, yet also American Wild, exhibiting clean hay and grass, corn and wheat, and tart lemon, grapefruit and cherry skin with a faint hint of Berliner-like funk.
Flavor is complex, tasty and hard to pinpoint, with a tart green apple-pear and light citrus start, toasty cracker and seedy funk, as well as a touch of oak and a bouquet of herbal hops bringing a slight bitterness.
The meringue head isn't just a description of the look, but bringing your mouth up to the glass, it is actually a formidable, fluffy and dense head that adds a level of feel to the beer few achieve. It is truly substantial and almost edible, taking that pilllowy intro into a contrasting crisp, light body with a sharp but palatable tartness, finishing conversely chewy and dry.
Wow, this sneaks up on you, I didn't realize the ABV.

Batch 10, Bottled on 10/17/13. Apple skin, earthy, Brett funk, cherry and hints of minerals. Bits of wheat and simple grain malt. Fairly complex. Clean, semi-dry and shorter finish. Creamy feel. Holding up very well.
