Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.60%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
“Provision Ale” is a rough translation of the French term “bière de provision“, which was sometimes used to describe special beers that were suitable for extended storage and aging. Brewed from relatively simple, straightforward ingredients, Mad Meg is golden colored and quite strong, at over 9% ABV. Its palate intertwines delicate farmhouse esters with earthy, spicy hops and clean malt flavors. The name “Mad Meg”, refers to a peasant woman from Flemish folklore, also known as “Dulle Griet” or “Dull Gret”, who leads an army of women to pillage hell. She’s famously depicted in Pieter Brueghel the Elder’s 1562 painting by the same name.

A tip o' the cap to Jester King - I simply do not understand how brewers can brew big beers like this (8.9% ABV) and there is literally no hint of booze.

The pour reveals a beautiful dark golden colored beer, and 2 fingers of slightly off-white head. The funky stuff is very present on the nose, and also on the taste - but as this warms, the funk recedes just a smidge and let's through the subtle hop flavors (some citrus) that make this more than a by-the-numbers Saison.

First had poured from 25.4-oz. bomber, gift from friend, labeled 8.80 ABV and "BATCH #14 -- 06.16.2015," into TEKU. Not complicated, Mad Meg is appropriate for a rustic, afternoon garden party, with moldy cheese and country pâté.

Pours a very dark golden color with a ton of white head, the smell is full of yeast, barley, grass, and a slight sweetness. Taste is based on the yeast and barley with some more subtle notes added; sweetness, musk, oak, and banana. The feel is almost like a light beer... lots of frothy, easy drinking beer but with lots of flavor. Solid beer.
