Got the half-growler at Westmere Beverage in Guilderland (just outside of Albany).

According to their website, this is the low-down on the beer:

"Midnight RYEder is a Black Rye IPA featuring grains grown right here in New York State! NY 6-row malted barley and NY Danko Rye malt form the dry spicy backbone of this ale. A touch of crystal malt and roasted barley add sweetness and a nice jet black color. American Simcoe, Mosaic, Centennial and Cascade hops add a firm bitterness, pleasant aroma and hop flavors of grapefruit and pine. Look for a full flavored black IPA with robust hop character and the dry spicy flavor of rye."

A: Poured into a Sam Smith's nonic-style pint glass. Body appears black, but when backlit it's more of a dark brown with mahogany edges. Half-finger khaki-colored head on top leaves nice thick lace.

S: Nice ABA nose: roasty, earthy and piney hops. Touch of spice, presumably from the rye.

T: Roasted malt, charcoal, hint of ash. Spicy, earthy bite. Rye is definitely noted. Finishes with a quite-dry bitterness. Hops are citrusy-juicy, show up faintly after the ashy-dry finish, and after a few sips I notice them more "underneath" everything, if that makes sense. This is a tasty Black IPA that fits in my wheelhouse. As it warms I even start to get some chocolate malt, thereby covering all my ABA bases.

M: A little bit on the thin side; call it medium in heft, but on the light side of medium. Carbonation is modest and smooth.

O: Thumbs up.

A: Shades of black walnut and deep mahogany. Clarity seems good with modest use of crystal malt. Creamy, dense tan head.

S: Rye bread and pine.

M: Medium body and coarse feel. Grainy throughout wits a good bitter aftertaste.

T: Malt backbone is stern with some raisin and spice. Rye flavor is more toasty bread than crusty. Sharp pine and grapefruit peel. Lychee fruit, earthy and floral.
