Yes, it s a tourist trap.

But if you're coming come to Boston from out of town, you owe yourself the experience. Its one of our oldest restaurants, and still features the stock "New England Fare" many Boston restaurants don't. It's made in the image of what once was.

Beer selection is quaint but functional - consider it a gateway more than an exemplar.

A friend of mine wanted to spot in here to eat while we were in the city. I wasn't all that pumped for it because I'm not into seafood at all. Thankfully I did manage to find something on the menu I would eat. The service was good and the vibe is very cool and historical. The beer selection is average. I can't say that I'd ever go back on my own but if I was out voted on a place to go I would go along.

Visited on day 3 of our June 2011 Northeast pub crawl although by the time we got to Union Oyster House it had turned into more of an oyster crawl. Very touristy, but it should be - America's oldest restaurant!

Crowded but found a place at the oyster bar and ordered up a couple Union Oyster House Colonial Ales (found out later it's made by Sam Adams). Oyster selection and freshness was fantastic. Surely not a great beer bar but a great piece of history and worth a stop on your way to one of the area's many pubs.

Union Oyster is a traditional tourist trap, though a bit sad due to the history of this great establishment. You will pay tourist prices, wait in lines, etc... Better options exist, but if spending some time in Boston - might as well visit for a dozen oysters and a few pints.

The slanted oyster bar is a great place to cozy up to watch the shucking and beer flow. Very intersting in that if the second floor needs a brew, they use a mini dumbwaiter (spelling?!) to send it on up.

Cheers!

PS - if new to Oysters...great place to start and ask questions.

Visited the UOH during my trip to the ABCF, I am surprised to find this place on Beeradvocate, but i will review none the less. Located near market/seaport area in Boston, The UOH is supposidly the oldest resturant in America and a favorite of JFK.

The UOH has a small bar on the main floor with seating areas on 3 levels. Booths where private and gave a good intimate feel, may be a good place to woo a love interest.

Food is mostly seafood. We were served by a crabby waitress (excuss the pun), but she was prompt and not over bearing. Food was served fairly quick and was good, definalty not worth the prices they charged though.

Beer selection was mostly Sam Adams and Harpoon. Nothing you could not find in any other bar in Boston. Beer was served in a frosted glass. :(

Overall, kind of a tourist trap... but not a terrible place to visit if decent seafood is on the to do list while visiting boston.
