Clear golden amber hue, thick, creamy head, scent (and taste) of pineapple, mango, peach and guava with a dank underpinning of cannabis-like cattiness/earthiness. Despite the sharpness, there is almost a paradoxical smoothness to this brew, and, although it is not quite as quaffable as its brother 2X4, it is also somewhat more dynamic. The bitterness is more really know you're drinking a hop-monster, albeit a somewhat refined and complex one.

Poured on draught at Backcountry Pizza. Wow, this beer is simply incredible. The melon and peach smell off the head is simply exquisite. The color is beautiful. The taste is a beautiful blend between west and east styles of IPA, like a Mountain IPA should be. If you told me there was no alcohol in this beer, I'd believe you. Simply awesome beer.

Here's the deal: I'm not even going to summarize any element of this beer. It's the best goddamn double IPA I've ever had. Drink it and experience it for yourself. No one else's descriptors will hold a candle to it. Well done, Melvin. Thank you for existing.

I never thought I would prefer a IIPA over 2X4, but this 100% Mosaic beauty is even more tropically fruit juicy, with an even creamier body. There is more evident bitterness, and a slightly more noticeable cattiness, but, somehow, I find that this just adds to the beer's appeal. The fruits are pineapple, mango, berries, guava, and peach. There is also a touch of onion, which seems to tie all the other flavors together. It seems, when it comes to IPAs, Melvin can do no wrong.

Poured from a 12oz can to an IPA glass.
Appearance- golden/orange.
Smell- citrusy, slightly dank.
Taste- slight orange notes, well balanced and a hint of floral notes on the finish.
Feel- slight warming sensation on mouth.
Overall- awesome beer! I wish this beer was available year around. I love 2x4, but I think this is even better. Picked this beer up on a recent trip to Portland. I wish I would have picked up more than 8.

Best DIPA I've ever had. It's funny: Most of the top 50 or so DIPAs reviewed on BA are on the east coast, but the style really grew up on the west coast nearer hop country. And there surely are more DIPAS produced on the west coast than east because of the amount of breweries by comparison. I've had a few top ones: Treehouse, Lawsons (both fresh). I have not had Hill Farmstead or the Alchemist (both amazing, I'm sure). But in my mind the best reviewed east coast brewery DIPAs rarely live up to their rating as compared to west coast DIPAs, and to a much greater degree single IPAs and pales and session pales which taste much better than their other coast counterparts, But that's ratings, I guess.
My point, I think, is that by saying this is the best DIPA I've ever had means that because I live in an amazing, wild beer culture region that a clear winner feels like such a special thing.

This review combines multiple consistent recent experiences with Asterisk poured on tap and from cans

A: Gorgeous light golden color outlined by silky white lacing
S: Citrus, melon and hops build great expectations
T: Taste follows the nose. Alcohol very well hidden. Agree with other reviews that first smell and taste create anticipation of a NE but quickly evolves into a wonderful WCDIPA style powerhouse

O: Nectar of the gods. Time to book a trip to Wyoming.

YES, A DIPA that doesn't taste like a barley wine! At 9% this is still all hops. Pours a slightly hazy bright light gold. Mosaic is huge in the nose, and probably the most present I've ever had it. Taste follows nose with a big punch of tropical fruit, some pine resin and the slightest bit of onion (I pick that up from Mosaic but I think I am in the minority). This is a bitter and somewhat dry beer for the ABV and it tastes closer to 7% to me. I wouldn't really call it balanced as the hopping was obviously aggressive - which is right up my alley for a DIPA, as I sometimes find them to be sugary messes. With everyone and their mom making a DIPA, they can be hit or miss for me. When they are executed well they can be fantastic, which is definitely the case here and everything I have tried from Melvin.

On draught at the Keg & Cork. 12 ounce globe glass.

It arrives looking oh so pretty. A hazy orange goldish coloured brew with a 2"..1"..head of foam. Lacing is outstanding.

Mosaic hops are the highlight of this DIPA and they do stand out in the smell. Bitter, very dank, floral as hell. A complete opposite of 2X4 and about equally enjoyable with all the sniffing I'm doing.

Dankness of flavour hits me straight out the gate. Mild bit of malt sweetness vs what 2X4 offers. Grapefruit mixed with a mild onion like taste that can either be a plus or a minus. In this case it works.

I am very glad that this is so different from 2X4; redundancy would be futile!

The general mouthfeel kicks it.

I hate to be redundant but. ..I appreciate Melvin taking this DIPA in a different direction. Worthy of trying is an understatement.

I'm on my third asterisk at the brewery and my reviews keep going up. Even though I don't love Mosaic as much as a few other hops mostly due to the slight oniony taste it's hard to fully describe how well executed this beer is. Usually a 9% (brewery lists it as 9% not 10%) 100+ IBU beer is either a malt bomb or so bitter/astringent it feels like it's cleaning your teeth while drinking it. This is so far from that. Bright and crisp with amazing hop aroma and somehow so smooth. This doesn't have the full mouthfeel that a heady or SOS has which makes it even more mystifying. Such a solid beer from
IMHO the best brewery out west.

Along with 2x4, this is my favorite Melvin offering, and a grand showcase for the Mosaic hop, which is here writ large, with copious amounts of berry, tropical fruit, and a weedy-earthiness in the aroma and flavor which helps to set it apart. The malt base is sturdy enough, and adds a pleasant background sweetness, but is not a hair bigger than it needs to be. A great West Coast-Style IIPA.

Epic beer. I don't always love IIPAs, especially as they get up towards 10%. This one bucks that trend with amazing sweet fruits up front, melon, apple. Then an amazingly clean finish for 10% with no booziness and a sharp clean hop finish.

Appearance: Arrives with a frothy head capping the yellow/amber liquid; some streaks linger on the way down

Smell: Floral and dank; citrusy with tropical fruit tones

Taste: Powerful citrus and tropical fruit tones build from the outset, with grapefruit, mango, pineapple and lime; just a touch of sweetness to complement the dankness through the mid-palate; bright and floral on the finish'

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Do we now need to add another category to the IPA kingdom - first west coast, then Vermont and now Wyoming?

12 oz can, shared at 504 Craft. Outstanding brew. Aroma is off the hook. Earthy and tropical flavors blend nicely, bright, almost perfect bitterness. ABV very well hidden. Want some more of this one.

Reminded me a lot of Hopslam. Lots of hops, some sweetness reminiscent of honey, smooth and creamy mouthfeel, incredible lacing from the huge head, and a good price point. A great DIPA.

Draft at The Taphouse in Boise... Pours clear golden... nice foamy white head... Huge piney and pithy citrus with some background allium hoppiness... This one is a monster hop bomb with nice clearly defined hop channels represented.. Pretty dank on the palate.. Maltiness is very present, but dries out very quickly and finishes pretty dry.. Not sweet ever, but perhaps a bit more bitterness would help cut down on the maltiness... Top tier DIPA... Tastes very fresh... Can't wait for the Melvin cans to start showing up.

Poured from a 12oz can into a speiglau ipa glass.

Look is a clear bright yellow with a big bubbly white head.

Aroma is astrigent lemongrass herbal citrus hops.

Taste hides all the alcohol. Just a astrigent pine hop balanced by sweet molasses.

Poured from a 12oz can into a tulip glass. Appearance is orange brown with almost no transparency with one finger thick white head. Smell is grapefruit, mango, onion and blueberry (classic Mosaic smell). Taste follows the nose with a decent amount of sweetness and moderate to low bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium-full in body and smooth with moderate carbonation.

Overall this is an excellent IPA with incredible aroma. This beer does a great job of showcasing the Mosaic hop. My only critique is that it is a little sweet.

Tulip pour at Crafty Fox in Denver.

Glowing peach-colored liquid with a frothy head and a ton of lace forming a sticky wall. Slight haze to the appearance but really clean. 5

Smells of sweet mango and prickly and spicy pineapple. Sweet and pungent and seductive. 4.25

Taste follows the nose with sticky, sweet and pungent mango and pineapple. Finish is straight sticky icky weed. Resinous weed. For real. Lots of weed in the flavor here. Tropical fruit and weed. I hope I get high. 4.5

I can't emphasize the sticky, sweet and pungent aspect of this beer. But that's up front. The finish is resinous, spicy and bone dry. Sweet in feel and thick up front but lingers clean and dry like something lighter. 4.25

Very enjoyable. Tons of flavor and feel but I throw it back with ease.

Grunt fill from Albertsons. Hazy golden body with thick fluffy head. Potent piney, hoppy aroma. Taste follows on with a huge hoppy hit, silky, velvety body . All around excellence here, ABV present but not overwhelming. Been a long day, so this really enjoyable.

Clear, golden body capped with a sticky, foamy, white head; fine carbonation bubbles with a slow rise. Soft, sweet, fruity aroma; lemon and pine resin. Sweet, juicy flavor, similar to the aroma; bread crust; bold yet balanced hop bitterness; smidgen of alcohol on the taste buds. Medium-heavy body; juicy and wet, ending in a rather dry finish.

This is another outstanding offering from Melvin's. It delivers huge, deep, complex and balanced flavors with a nice alcohol kick without being exceedingly heavy-handed in taste and mouthfeel. Frank Zappa's album cover phrase from "Burnt Weeny Sandwich" captures this beer perfectly: "God! This Is A Tasty Little Sucker!"...
