Notes / Commercial Description:
Hubert? I’ve heard of him. A friend of a friend knows him. Apparently he’s awesome, but we’ve never met. Well. It’s about time you did. Most you connoisseurs would just call him an IPA, but we call him an MPA. The Melvin Pale Ale. A welcomed hand shake to your taste buds. Light, crisp, fresh and a little bitty bitter. Lets just say he won’t be that jerk that leaves you at the bar at 2am. He’s low in alcohol. What a nice guy… that Hubert.

6-pack purchased at Argonaut Liquor in Denver, CO earlier today. 12 fl oz can format with standard pull-tab top. Blue, white, and black label.

6% ABV. Pale ale.

HEAD: White in colour. Occupies ~50% of my Sam Adams perfect pint glass with ~11cm of head. Frothy, soft in appearance, inviting. Retention is excellent - ~10+ minutes.

BODY: A little cloudy, actually, but transparent and translucent. Pale copper colour of average vibrance. No yeast/lees are visible within.

Appears well-carbonated. It's not a unique or special appearance for a pale ale, but it's generally inviting.

AROMA: I believe the kids would refer to this as "dank." Tropical, floral, grassy, fruity. Hits diverse hop aromatics, nailing everything except pine, juiciness, and resin. Tropical fruit dominates, evoking mango and maybe tangerine. Pale malt aromatics suggest the hop bitterness is well-balanced by malty sweetness, but I don't find any overly sweet caramalt or crystal malt aromatics.

An inviting aroma of limited pungency that suggests a balanced and enjoyable yet straightforward pale ale. I'm looking forward to trying it.

Aromatic intensity is above average.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Hoppy yet balanced, bringing tropical fruit: mango and tangerine, primarily. There're some floral hop flavours as well, but no pine, resin, juice, grapefruit, or overt citrus.

Some scratchy bitterness does tag along with the hop flavours, and the mouthfeel gets too scratchy and coarse, dragging on the palate a bit and making the beer a little parching instead of refreshing. But it's aptly light to medium-bodied, boasts apt carbonation, and doesn't suffer from any harshness, astringency, booziness, oiliness, etc.

Backbone is all pale malt. I don't find any overly sweet caramalt or crystal malts.

Balance needs dialing in, but there's enough hop flavour here even if it wants for more depth of flavour and expressiveness/vividness.

I do like it in a general sense, but the flavour profile isn't in clear focus, it doesn't amount to a gestalt whole of a beer, and the mouthfeel is troublesome. Not a juicy or refreshing pale ale, but rather an aggressive and challenging one that sacrifices drinkability in favour of hop bitterness.

OVERALL: Far from a great expression of the style, but not a bad brew by any means - even if it's a bit too aggressive to be labelled "pleasant" or "enjoyable." Indeed, it's rather unapproachable for a pale ale, coming off feeling like a beer that wanted to be an IPA but didn't want to commit. If the mouthfeel weren't as flawed as it is, this might be solid work; its hop build is interesting enough. But that dragging scratchiness is tough to get past, and as a result I wouldn't recommend this to others - even if I'll enjoy working through the sixer I bought in spite of the beer's obvious textural issues. Finally, it's worth saying what's obvious from the get-go - this is just too bitter for a pale ale.

12 oz can poured into a weizen glass.

Appearance
Blonde. Good clarity. Light carbonation. 1 finger of creamy white head.

Nose
Grapefruit, sulfur, and passion fruit.

Taste
It tastes much better than the smell. Grapefruit, navel orange, papaya, and slight pineapple. Light caramel and candy sugar maltiness. Finishes with pine and zesty florals.

Mouthfeel
Light bodied, crisp, smooth, and semi-dry with a medium-light bitterness.

Overall
The smell is off putting, but it goes down easy for a beefed up Pale Ale.

A: Pours a 2 finger head, hazy golden color, good carbonation.

S: Smells of piney hops, citrus, bright summer fruit, maybe mangoes. Very refreshing.

T: Starts off sweet, hoppy, then gets more hoppy, and ends up being one big bitter hop bomb. Couldn't really make out anything else.

O: It started off with so much potential. The smell was so alluring, but alas this is too hoppy and bitter for my taste.

Just a standard, mildly citrus APA. Doesn't beat the Sierra Nevada standard

-spiegelau ipa glass. 11.10.17. consumed 05.29.18.

A: Bright orange coloring is dense in nature, with little back lighting coming through. A strong sense of effervesce is seen. Soapy textured head is pearl white in color, and leaves a good amount of sloppy lace on the vessel.

S: Fresh lemony aroma is wet and fresh with some soft, lightly dry lemon grass hopping. Some dry grains provides moderate support and strength. There is a faint hint of onion grass.

T: Spicy orange and citrus hops, lightly dry for flavor. Again there is a small presence of onion-grassy hops, small bittering with some herbal citric and basil bite on the finish. Dry flowery sense and dry hop bittering occur on the finish along with some dry grainy dust.

M; Lighter side of medium weight for the mouthful. Soft and smooth feel, bittering.

O: Overall a solid level of hopping, reminded me a bit of Dale's Gumba with the grassy onion hops. Good flavor, nothing that really stands out, but little to complain about. Hits the middle of the road mentality, good drinkability, nice presentation and a decent crispness rounds things out.

12 oz can poured into pint glass, thanks to Kyle for the brew.
A: pours a medium golden wheat body, bright white one finger foam head that fades to the perimeter, stringy lacing, carbonation
S: buttery orange, tropical fruit aroma like pineapple, cracker, sweet malt
M: medium creamy body that has some crispness
T: orange oil, grapefruit rind, heavy hop punch, biscuit, malty, pine resin
O: good solid IPA that packs a punch

On tap at Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a clear burnt orange, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like burnt pine, grass, melon, and caramel malt.

This isn't the best Melvin beer, but it's still pretty aight. It's bit malty, with a subtle stake astringency. There's melon and lots of grapefruit, with resinous intense pine and grassy hops.

This is very bitter on the finish, but otherwise pretty clean. It's got a good level of carbonation.

This isn't my favorite pale ale, but I dug it anyway.

Pouring from a 12 oz. can into a pint glass. This beer is another one from Melvin with great clarity. It is medium golden in color, almost resembles apple juice. It formed a thin white crown. The smell is juicy citrus notes. About all of their beers I've been having recently have the same smell. Kind of slight and muted citrus juiciness. The taste comes in with a really smooth hop presence that doesn't overpower the malts and lets them be shown the whole way through. Slightly bitter, slightly crisp from the almost corn like malts. Overall, this is a nice pale that I would drink again.

Draft at the brewpub and now from a bottle.... Clear dark golden with a short lived white head... Light bready pale maltiness with a nice shot of citrus and tropical fruity hops... Definitely still in the Melvin wheelhouse, but leans distinctively back toward the APA side of things... Very drinkable.
