Notes / Commercial Description:
Hubert? I’ve heard of him. A friend of a friend knows him. Apparently he’s awesome, but we’ve never met. Well. It’s about time you did. Most you connoisseurs would just call him an IPA, but we call him an MPA. The Melvin Pale Ale. A welcomed hand shake to your taste buds. Light, crisp, fresh and a little bitty bitter. Lets just say he won’t be that jerk that leaves you at the bar at 2am. He’s low in alcohol. What a nice guy… that Hubert.

Canned 10/27/17, "I don't know bro"
Pours a huge frothy foamy head that fades slowly with sticky lacing, hazy sediment laden pale orange color

Nose fair hops, some citrus, a touch of grapefruit, floral, a bit grassy, hint of malt

Taste brings more hops, citrus, orange candy notes, little zest, touch of grapefruit and almost tropical notes but not quite there, perhaps mango, a bit spicy and floral notes, candy sweet like malts, cracker notes, creamy too, finishes drier and very bitter like a nice APA, spicy citrus rind hops

Mouth is med bod, a bit creamy, decent fluffy carb

Overall not bad, feel like it would have been better fresh, but still not bad.

This beer. Showing up in MA out of the blue and bringing its expertly balanced West Coast not-quite-IPA chassis with a crisp layer of citrus on top. Crisp, well carbonated, dry and perfectly bitter. Come on in my fridge, friend, and stay as long as you like.

Cans sat in the shadow of its more popular IPAs until I decided to give it a shot. My favorite of what I’ve had so far from Melvin.

Cloudy copper-gold hue with a soft cap of head. Not hazzzeee, not clear - somewhere between.

Crisp piney, citrusy and floral aroma that speaks to a hop-heavy profile. But! You pick up some crackery malt as well. Outstanding.

Taste is pine, hop-citrus that veers toward domestic fruit as opposed to tropical - orange, grapefruit, lemon zest - and a spicy earthiness that leads into the exceptionally dry finish.

Clean, crisp, bright - eminently drinkable.

12 oz can poured into a weizen glass.

Appearance
Blonde. Good clarity. Light carbonation. 1 finger of creamy white head.

Nose
Grapefruit, sulfur, and passion fruit.

Taste
It tastes much better than the smell. Grapefruit, navel orange, papaya, and slight pineapple. Light caramel and candy sugar maltiness. Finishes with pine and zesty florals.

Mouthfeel
Light bodied, crisp, smooth, and semi-dry with a medium-light bitterness.

Overall
The smell is off putting, but it goes down easy for a beefed up Pale Ale.

Melvin Brewery calls this a MPA. Their version of an IPA, Melvin PA. Delightful. Pours a light lemony color, lacing hangs around nicely. I can taste the bitterish taste but it’s nicely done here. I have friends that get Melvin’s brews from Wyoming to me here in Florida. Yay for friends because I have had three of their brews so far and they are really well done beers.

Canned 12/07/17. Pours hazy, gold in color with 1/3 inch head. Taste is big melon, tangerine, and grassy bitterness and a touch of unripe strawberry. Bitter, medium-high bodied with moderate carbonation. Really complex for the style. All sorts of wonderful flavors going on here. Fruity, but not juicy like a NEIPA. Different from most pales I have had. I will get this again. Well worth seeking out. Favorite from the brewery so far.

Happy New Beer* 2018!!! Well it’s off to a cracker already, with my beer shelf literally bursting with beers leading up to that mystical 1,000 reviews before my self-imposed retirement (for the sake of my liver, gut, and that thing called Diabetes). First up for 2018 is by a brewery known as “Melvin”, yes he thinks he’s people, cute. This Melvin Hubert MPA (which apparently stands for “Melvin Pale Ale”) was recommended by a likeminded IPA fan who told me this was the shit. So without further ado - let’s drink this shit!

Poured from a 355ml can into a nonic pint.

A: Cloudy pale orange, as I might have said in the past with creative licence: Gamboge body, with a fine creamy white 1 centimetre head that slowly compacts down nicely. Looks the tasty part alright. 8/10.

S: Sweet Starburst orange and light piney hops mingle with floral hints and a broad biscuit/dry cracker malt base. Pretty decent hop aroma considering that this was canned in October 2017 (yes hop fade will unfortunately be a factor with a brew this old). Overall this is a rather pleasant American Pale Ale aroma. 8/10.

T: Fresh this would have been a hop beast - there’s still resiny hop tones in the palate after 3 months! Flavours include the aforementioned: Starburst orange, piney/floral hops with a biscuit/dry cracker malt base - which takes centre stage due to the age of this brew. Finishes dry with a mild herbal bitterness. Classic West Coast flavours from Wyoming, and really smooth at 6% ABV, top brew Melvin (if indeed I can call you that). 8/10.

M: Mouthfeel wowed me a bit - this is smooth stuff, up there with Founders Centennial IPA, yum-o! Medium bodied with a creamy/dense carbonation. 9/10.

D: So drinkable I finished it before I got to writing this section. It’s a tasty drop Melvin Hubert, quite dry in the finish too, so it’s moreish. Definitely need to try this again fresh (if I ever get back to the states - not likely at this stage). The body and flavour conspired to quench my thirst and egg me on towards inebriation, as all great beers do. Cons: Not really doing anything new/exciting, more flavour complexity would be nice, but other than that it’s a solid: 8/10.

Food match: Gourmet pizza, something with prosciutto and rocket, other foods that introduce dichotomous flavours of spicy and savoury would work well here.

*To recycle an oft used pun for me.
