Notes / Commercial Description:
Hubert? I’ve heard of him. A friend of a friend knows him. Apparently he’s awesome, but we’ve never met. Well. It’s about time you did. Most you connoisseurs would just call him an IPA, but we call him an MPA. The Melvin Pale Ale. A welcomed hand shake to your taste buds. Light, crisp, fresh and a little bitty bitter. Lets just say he won’t be that jerk that leaves you at the bar at 2am. He’s low in alcohol. What a nice guy… that Hubert.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a medium golden amber with a big three finger white head with good retention and great lacing. Aroma of light bready malt with light caramel, citrus hops, lemon and orange citrus, light tropical fruit, mostly guava and pineapple, smells good. Flavor is light bready malt, citrus and piney hops, lots of mixed fruit; orange and lemon, pineapple, apple, melon with some pleasant estery fruit flavors developing in the piney and citrus hop finish. Medium bodied with light creaminess and good carbonation. One can was barely enough to do a review; there was so much going on that I was mostly finished with it before I competed this. There have been some amazing fruit forward IPAs coming out recently, and this pale ale gives them a run for the title. Fruity, hoppy and full of flavor for the style. Nicely done. Despite a flood of great IPA/APAs on the market now, Melvin brews are a welcome addition.

12 oz. Can

Pours a very nice slightlly hazy golden orange color, very nice carbonation, with a very nice two-finger thick/creamy white head, which leaves a few thick/creamy islands and sticky lacing behind. The nose is pretty hoppy, and citrusy, with some pine notes. The taste is pretty freakn' awesome for a APA, but it should be an IPA, but........, very nice hoppyness, very nice citrus, with some pine notes, still APA or IPA, I really never get the pineyness in most of those styles, not until hitting the 9% ABV DIPAs, for the most part. Medium body, ABV hidden very well, their is also some chewyness to this brew, not common in a APA or IPA. Overall, fuckn' surprised my ass. Very Nice! Highly Recommended! I remember Bitterbill telling me of this place many moons ago, and I always remembered it as Thai Me Up, did not know about the Melvin part. Almost wanted to visit this place when still in Utah. Glad I bought a sixer.

From a 12 oz can to a tulip.

A-A normal pour from the can results in nearly three fingers of dense, off-white foam. Retention is pretty good and the foam leaves chunks of lace on the glass as I drink it down. Not much carbonation is visible in the orange-golden liquid. It is a touch hazy.

S-The aroma is on the hoppy side, but with a nice balancing malt aroma. Malts suggest bread and toasted grain with a good bit of honey sweetness to counter the hops. Hops are citrusy. I sniff some orange, lime, and a good bit of zesty pine bitterness.

T-The beer packs a lot of flavor and nice balance. More hoppy than the smell would lead you to believe, but with enough balance from the sweet, toasty malt that it never feels all the way IPA. Hops are citrusy (I keep tasting lime) with a hint of melon, but not like the hazy, juicy IPAs out there. Instead, there is a good bit of pine zest and snappy bitterness to keep this beer honest.

M-The body is medium to full bodied with a perfect amount of semi-crisp carbonation. It drinks really easily, but remains substantial.

O-I like this guy a lot. It is flavorful, robust-yet-drinkable, and it clocks in at a reasonable ABV. I can see myself buying more of this as my daily drinker.

L:Slightly hazy golden yellow color, pours a very creamy frothy head with rings of thick lacing around the glass. Very good looking beer.

S: Lots of pine and kinda tree sap, also notes of orange and other tropical fruit. Very inviting smelling beer.

T: Crackery sweet malt, with tropical fruit and a very strong piney bitterness, but for how bitter it is it doesn't linger for too long, might be slightly bitter for a pale ale.

F: Medium carbonation, light body, very easy drinking beer, especially for the bitterness.

O: A really tasty beer that is really easy drinking.

12 oz can. Pours slightly hazy golden yellow with a big creamy bubbly white head that retains well and leaves some lacing.

The aroma is sweet cracker malts with piney resiny hops and some fruit.

The flavor is sweet honey malts with a little fruit and a huge piney resiny bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a nice huge hop forward pale ale.
