Citradamus IIPACitradamus IIPA
Notes: The great Citradamus predicts this IIPA will be one of your favorites. Citradamus is Melvin’s world class IIPA brewed with 100% Citra hops, pristine mountain water and northwest malt. Flavors of citrus (duh), pine and total dankness. Dry hopped with ludicrous amounts of Citra for that classic hoppiness that Melvin has become known for.

Many thanks to thanks to tacosandbeer for this can.

A - Pours a hazy dark orange color with thin lacing and low carbonation.

S - Citrus and orange.

T - Citrus and orange with some pine on the back end with a little malt sweetness on back end.

M - Medium body with gentle carbonation.

O - This is a fine D-IPA and the ABV is very deceptive.

A: The beer is rather hazy amber yellow in color. It poured with a finger high light beige head that gradually died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface, a collar around the edge, and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of orange citrus are present in the nose along with slight hints of caramel malts.
T: Like the smell, the taste is dominated by strong flavors of orange citrus from all of the Citra hops and has underlying hints of caramel malts with bits of dankness. Little if any bitterness is perceptible.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. No crispness is detectable.
O: This beer is a definite hop bomb and really packs in its aromas and flavors of citrusy hops. While it manages to hide its alcohol very well, it also seems to mask any bitterness and crispness, so it's almost like drinking and Imperial New England IPA if there was such a style.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a slightly hazy, medium to dark orange amber with a fine two finger white head with great retention and thick lacing. Aroma of pale malt, citrus hops with a little dankness, lots of orange, light tropical fruit. Flavor is pale malt with slight caramel, citrus hops, orange and light grapefruit; somewhat estery. Finishes with orange and tangerine, moderate citrus hop bitterness and semi-sweet malt, leaning towards candi malt. Medium bodied with nice moderate creaminess. Wow, this one delivers what it promises. The Citradamus Orange on the can is what you get here. Possibly the freshest, most estery orange flavor I've had in an IPA. There is a moment in the taste where I wondered if this would get too sweet or juicy, but then the malt asserted itself and all was not only better but great. They hype this a lot on the can, but it is quite exceptional. This is a great imperial IPA. One of the beers that makes me regret my project to try different beers as much as possible. I could drink this every day for a while. These guys are masters with IPAs.

yup, its great, go figure. another beautiful and delicious melvin ipa, is anyone surprised? these guys are taking over the world, at least here in colorado, with their numerous hoppy delights, and this is one of the best among them. the can claim is bold, the best ipa ive ever had? i dont think so, but its not way off, and one of the better straight citra beers i have had. usually this varietal seems a little soft and one dimensional in a single hop context to me, but here, its much more complete, assertive, and bitter, without sacrificing its signature aroma, flavor, and feel. thats the real success of this beer. nice orangey color to this, short of rust colored, with a little chill haze and a tall white head. aroma and flavor of heavy citra dry hop, that sweet lemon and bright botanical complexion, but there is also a little sweetness from the grain in here, not too much at all, and a lighter overall bitterness, or at least perceived bitterness for a melvin beer, but more than we usually can get from citra in isolation. i get a touch of cotton candy in the middle, crystallized hoppiness too, icy and fresh. not the typical "juicy bomb" deal here, but there is a great fruit juiciness about it, a highly drinkable medium body, a dangerously well hidden alcohol strength, and it all comes at a super reasonable price. a new standard in citra ipa.

A: Cloudy orange gold, 1 finger head of foam, great looking, due in part to the lacing.

S: Mango, bits of pineapple, grapefruit, smell you gets from dry hopping though I have no idea whether it is or not.

T: Weird but I will say that I noticed caramel malt right off. Getting down to business, the Citra hops work their magic. Grapefruit with some other fruits, dark, I am guessing. Degree of dankness is low for me but I reckon that's what makes it so smooth, so easy drinking.

M: High end of medium bodied.

O: A superb DIPA. Waiting for the cans to show up in Melvin's rotational program. In the meantime, I will enjoy it on draught while it lasts.

12oz undated can from the source.

Golden-copper with a chill haze and a nice head. Citra hops aplenty in the nose. Juicy peach and orange juice. Medium bodied with a creamy, crisp mouthfeel. Juicy tropicals on the palate and some light balancing malt and bitterness. Finishes with ripe citrus and faintly sweet.

Probably my favorite Melvin that I was able to try in Wyoming.

12 oz can. Pours hazy dark golden orange with a big fluffy off white head that retains well and laces the glass some.

The aroma is sweet tropical fruit and resiny piney hops and some slight alcohol as it warms.

The flavor is a little sweet tropical fruit and bready caramel malt quickly followed by a big resiny piney spicy hop bitterness with a little onion coming out as it warms. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a big huge hop bomb that is partially balanced by the sweet fruitiness. A lot of Melvin beers can be a bit harsh on the bitterness - I like what the fruitiness adds.

12 oz can...."canned on 12/28/18" so about 7 weeks in the can.

Pours out about medium hazed, lifting a large and super long lasting cap. Leaves gobs of thick frothy lacing all over the glass...Fine looking product.

Citric and quite dank sniff..

Heady brew at 9.5%

Oranges, grapefruit, and pineapple notes abound..a hint of gin/alcohol in the back of the mouth.....mighty tasty and highly enjoyable...worth seeking out.

At last, the return of #WyomingWednesday thanks to a snow day off from school! #BumptheHump I CANnot tell you how excited I was when we began getting Melvin beers here in PA & even more so since they were in CANs. It was a CANQuest (tm) coup!

From the CAN: "RIIPA Series"; "The great Citradamus predicts that this will be the best IIPA that youhave ever had. Go ahead, put this beer up in your grill. Smell that? Those are hops. Citra hops. Dank-ass Citra to be exact. Your old favorite IPA does not have Citras? Why is that? Because they are wicked spendy we bought them all, that's why. Go ahead, yuck it up."; "Rotational Imperial Pale Ale Series"; "Citradamus predicts you're not going to hate. You're going to party."; "Recycle!"

I was really CANticipating the Crack! on this one, but I still CANducted a slow, gentle Glug. An in-glass swirl raised two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, tawny head with very good retention that left behind some beautiful lacing in its wake. Color was solid Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was unmistakably Citra/citrus, especially grapefruit, with some earthy dank and orange peel thrown in for good measure. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but on the approach. The taste was more melon-y than citrusy, honeydew, peach, mango, orange peel, light pine, light grapefruit. If I were going to CANplain, I would say that lacks the bitterness that I prefer in a DIPA/IIPA, even though it is noted at 76 IBUs. Finish, however, was dry, although not entirely bitter. There was a pronounced earthiness on the finish, almost like a fresh/wet hopped beer & I could see Vetbidder's mention of "onion". It was nothing near as strong as in Gubna, but I perceived it, along with all of the fruitiness. It was good, but I am not doing cartwheels or handstands over it.

12 oz. Can
Canned On: 021417

Poured into a tulip a very nice clean/clear dark golden yellowish color, very nice carbonation, with a very nice thick/creamy two-finger white head, which also leaves some very nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, very nice sweetness, very nice citrus notes, very nice pine note. The taste is very nice hoppy, nice sweetness, citrusy, piney. Medium body, ABV hidden very well, very nice chewyness, with a very nice dry/bitter finish. Overall, this is still a very tasty brew. Definitely would like to see other Melvins around GJ. Highly Recommended!

Drank from a 12 fl. oz can purchased at Julio’s Liquors, Westborough, MA
Canned on: 02/03/18
Served in a tulip

Crystal clear, crimson-amber appearance. The shockingly transparent body was topped by a barely-there, finely bubbled, off-white film that quickly dissolved. A few thin streaks of lacing stuck along the glass.

As stated on the can, the aroma was amazingly hoppy and dank. Cannabis notes dominated. There was a fairly intense citrus presence as well. Candied orange peel came to mind. Quite sweet. Honey-like notes were also apparent. As the beer sat, the sweet citrus notes competed with the weedy dankness for dominance, and the citrus eventually prevailed.

The flavor was hoppy as well and also quite sticky and sweet. Citrus notes dominated. Loads of juicy orange. Like the nose, candied orange peel came to mind. Bit of tangerine. Touch of dankness in the center. Hint of floral honey. More orange rind and pithiness on the back end and in the finish. Some rind-like bitterness and syrupy sweetness lingered after the swallow.

Terrific frothy, fluffy mouthfeel. Fuller bodied for the style. Syrupy and quite viscous. The liquid contained a fine, zippy effervescence that turned slick and smooth on the palate. By the drink’s end, the liquid left a slightly sticky film on my lips.

Is this, as the can proclaims, “the best IPA that (I) have ever had”? Definitely not. Regardless, it is a solid, West Coast-influenced take on the style that balances big dank, citrusy hop notes with a nice caramel malt sweetness. While this IPA might not totally be my thing, it is a welcomed respite from the New England-style juice bombs that I usually drink.

Another IIPA from Melvin? Well hops is what they do best, so why not? Citra is my favorite hop and it seems like a lot of breweries have a hard time showcasing it, as it can have some rough edges if used in a heavy-handed fashion.

L: Cool looking orange cans pour a big, cloudy, frothy solution. Appears to be unfiltered. Lots of white foamy head and a large amount of carbonation. Color is light gold/with orange highlights.

S: Big time hop aroma suggesting lots of dry hop/whirlpool hops. Lots of orange and melon and some piney/grassy notes too. delicious smell, could smell this for a long time and be happy.

T: Big time "juicy" hits up front. Lots of orange, tangerine, some nice caramel sweetness, and big boozy hit. The can says 9.5%, not 9% listed on this beer's review. The alcohol is certainly there, but not overwhelming and well integrated. Finishes clean and not harsh or astringent, like many citra-forward beers can be. They really pulled of the showcase of citra hops across the board. Truly wonderful and one of the most flavorful IPA's ive had.

F: This one really has a big creamy mouth feel that lingers on the palate. It has one of the best mouth feels of any IPA I've had. the higher carbonation and unfiltered nature of this beer really aid with that impression as well.

O: This Is a big, hoppy, juicy ipa for hop head lovers. I'd put this up there as Melvin's best beer I've had, and up there with most double ipa's out there. The big juicy smack of hops, well integrated and clean balance of this beer, as well as the awesome mouthfeel really designate this a s a world class IPA. I'm going back for more soon.

Awesome beer right here, my peeps. All kinds of citrus like Adriana Lima picking the morning harvest, which is met by a glorious, creamy malt backbone. It’s almost as if Adriana told the head honcho at Melvin to step aside and took control.

Ahhh Raul and Adriana... wait, where am I going with this?
