This is a great ipa. IPA is my favorite and this is the best I’ve had so far.

I've been hearing a lot about this Melvin, and finally got a chance to try my first one. Melvin IPA pours, from the can, a clear orange color with a moderate frothy head, decent retention and lacing.
Tropical fruit aromas hit the nose first, mainly pineapple and alcohol soaked mango. There is also citrus fruit, grapefruit, orange and a good amount of pine. In short, a typical assortment of IPA like aromas that we have all grown to love.
Although first impressions are of its fruity and juicy taste, it soon becomes apparent that the piny, resiny and oily hops give the juice its run for the money. They add a prickly bitterness and coat the mouth with resin like stickyness. Dry finish with a long bitter linger.
Medium bodied and moderately carbonated. Fruity yet earthy, prickly and dry. Solid IPA all around.

A: Poured from the can into a Piraat tulip-type glass. Body at first appears to be clear - a bright orangey-amber - but on second look, turns out there's plenty of fine particulate in suspension. Nice 2+-finger off-white head on top leaves behind loads of lacing on the glass.

S: Throwback west coast American IPA nose of citrus and a hint of pine.

T: Clean, traditional American IPA taste: modest caramel malt foundation is followed by a bit of citrus (grapefruit, orange and orange peel), then a good amount of pine. Finishes with modest pine needle/resiny bitterness. Modest drying ethanol-type heat is felt on the aftertaste, which isn't surprising given the 7.5% ABV.

M: Nice feel to this one - call it medium in heft, with a fine, soft carbonation noted at the finish.

O: Good stuff. I paid a hefty price for this one ($20.99 for the sixer - ouch), but I'm enjoying the flashback to the "old days" of West Coast-style American IPAs. This could be a dangerous drinker. . . .

Consumed 1/5/17

A: Tangerine to medium orange with some gold highlights - mostly clear, some chill haze - pours with a medium sized, slightly off white head, fades to a wispy cap, retains an above-average collar and leaves some great streaks of lacing

S: Citrus, West Coast style - bright, punchy, juicy orange and grapefruit - some citrus peel, pith, zest, and oil - floral citrus - herbal, green, lightly dank hops with some pine resin and pine needles - some hints of tropical fruit, including melon and pineapple, but these aromas are overpowered by the citrus blast - some light bread and pale grain at the base, light grainy sweetness

T: Well-controlled citrus blast - orange and grapefruit juice, flesh, rind, zest, and some pith - floral citrus - herbal hops - pine needles, pine resin, some spice - touches of other fruit, such as pineapple - medium-high bitterness - pale and caramel malts, with more depth than expected - some pale grain and toast, hints of bread crust - dry with some lingering oil

M: Medium body, medium carbonation, smooth with a mostly crisp finish

O: West coast? Wyoming coast?

I had heard a bit about Melvin before they unexpectedly started distributing in Massachusetts. It's a refreshing change from the abundance of "NEIPAs" I have been drinking lately. It's a wonderfully West coast approach, with some great citrus hops, a solid malt foundation, and some actual bitterness. I will be drinking this again.

12 oz can poured into a shaped IPA glass.

Appearance
Golden. Excellent clarity. 2 fingers of loose head.

Nose
Fruity Pebbles, lemon zest, and grapefruit zest.

Taste
Fruity Pebbles, lemon, and grapefruit zest. Light caramel and honey maltiness. Hints of musky tropical fruits and pine resin.

Mouthfeel
Medium bodied, crisp, oily, and moderately bitter.

Overall
Pretty standard IPA. I'm not understanding the overprized ratings.

Lightly weathered copper orange in color with a light haze. Poured with a moderate, creamy white foam with medium retention. Mellow aromas of over-ripe citrus, doughy bread, and caramel malt, with notes of sweet dark fruit. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Light smooth feel through the middle with pleasant warmth to the end. Ripe citrus flavors up front with caramel malt, dark fruit sweetness, and light spiciness. Medium spicy bitterness through the middle. Spicy hops and caramel malt continue from the middle to the end. Finished a sweet boozy bite and light bitterness that does not linger. Mellow, well balanced and very drinkable. Hop character plays nicely with malt flavors and sweetness. Mellow finish makes this easy drinking. Good stuff.

Welcome back to #WyomingWedneday as I CANtinue to do whatever I CAN to Bump the Hump & celebrate the midweek in my own indomitable fashion. I am looking at the cover of MAD #1, with the memorable exchange of a terrified man & woman and their thumb-sucking baby on the approach of a menacing shadow as follows: "That thing! That slithering blob coming towards us!" "What is it?" "It's Melvin!" Ha!

From the CAN: "Living Life to the Emptiest"; "Dear Enjoyer, Two brewers walk into a Thai restaurant in Wyoming, day drink, and write a recipe. The beer that came from that day started an empire. Well, not really ... but the beer was exactly what they wanted. So they made a hell of a lot more of it. Look at you Melvin, all grown up."; "Drink it. Don't overthink it. Testify."; "Recycle!"

Is this Melvin Melvin? Melvin squared? Melvin in a CAN, for sure! I Crack!ed it open & began a very gentle Glug into the awaiting glass. This one required an in-glass swirl to raise two-plus fingers of foamy, rocky, tawny head with limited retention. Color was solid Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose held a load of pine & grapefruit, like we were kickin' it old skool! I CAN get behind something like this! Mouthfeel was medium to full, not quite creamy, but big for the style. I let it kind of roll around in my mouth and on my tongue to really get a taste of the pine resin, especially. It also held grapefruit and a pleasant biscuitiness, but the cool mint of the pine was what really excited me. Finish was dry, but not gasping or really even overly bitter. Definitely a great addition to our area's distribution!
