Style: Berliner Weisse

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This 4.2% sessionable sour is truly a product of creativity, ingenuity, and luck. In the summer of 2013 we took a test batch of our sessional sour summer ale, Provincial, that didn’t quite hit gravity, and decided to have some fun with it! We added a heavy dose of raspberries. The end result was so delicious, we decided to recreate it! This delightfully tart fruit beer is refreshing, with a citrusy raspberry aroma which transitions to a subtlety sweet and tart finish.

Notes of lemon zest and tart raspberries.

Understanding well the history, flavor, texture and uniqueness of the classic German Berlinerweiss, the brewers of Funkwerks also understand the flirtation that brewers and drinkers alike have always had with fruit syrups as well.

Pouring a likely pinkish mauve, Raspberry Provincial rises with a loose and airy froth. Its tangy aromas swirl around the branch ripe raspberry and the supporting twang of citrusy, lactic sourness and only a hint of wheat. A light sweetness of sourdough, taffy and agave provide a light buffer to the expansive sourness and a creamy, bready texture at first sip.

While the flavor of raspberry is front and center on the middle palate, the framework of the beer is it sourness that comes with a citrusy taste of lime, lemon and white grapefruit. Crabapple, gooseberry and a light passionfruit character each play secondary to the citrus. Dry white wine and cider give the raspberry flavors a pink lemonade flavor in a strong sangria late palate.

Medium light in body, especially for Berlinerweiss, the added raspberry flavors and textures add a depth of flavor and a rounded body to the otherwise bone dry ale. A quick aftertaste of cider and wine is surpassed only by the linger of fresh raspberries in a medium short extension. The infusion of raspberries from the source of the brewer is a big improvement over the addition of raspberry syrups at the bar.

Pours dark pink with big, foamy head. Lots of carbonation. Smells like sweet tart. Light mouthfeel. Rasberry is suitable fruit for sour beer.

Poured from 330ml bottle into glass. Bottling date is marked as '2016.09.20'.
Clear, red amber colored body. Each pour results in a piled on white head, which recedes quite rapidly. No lacing left behind.
Aroma is deep raspberry, no funk or sour aspects are presented.
Taste is a mix of sweet and funky raspberry. Not sour nor tart. The raspberry is presented in a full spectrum of flavor that represents the fruit well.
Medium mouth feel. High carbonation. Rather dry and tight (more than tart) in the taste profile.
Each sip is an experience of highly carbonated true raspberry fruit taste, as can be expected from a fermented drink.

for a berliner weiss, not that sour at all, more sweet with plenty of raspberry, both in the nose and tongue. Body amazingly light and super-drinkable, like a great thirst-quencher brew for a super summer day.

Light and airy with great raspberry finish. Massively delicious. Definitely a must-try for berliner or fruit beer fans. I can see this one being real popular with the ladies.

11.2 oz. bottle poured into tall vertical at Jester King on May 14, 2017
(bottled on Jan. 1, 2017)

L: cloudy magenta (red-red-orange) topped by over 2 inches of white/pink-tinged foam; no stick/lace after foam dissipates quickly

S: sour-sour-sweet raspberry, slightly funky, maybe some lemon peel; as it warms, raspberry sweetness takes over lemon

T: tart raspberry

F: super light and super carbonated

O: amazing beer, about the only thing it's missing is freshness, but even a little past three months old, the raspberries are still very present and tasty, offering lots of tartness but bits and pieces of fruity sweetness that make it enjoyable; as tasty and well-made as this beer is, I'll be seeking out more Funkwerks in the very near future

Pours raspberry-hued rose slightly cloudy with a quickly fading head. Looks delicious.

Smells absolutely delicious- red raspberries, lemon, citrus.

Taste is raspberry- lemony tartness, slightly sweet, citrus bitterness into a tart/clean finish. Decent flavor if not quite tart enough.

Very light body on the palate, 3/10 on a tartness scale, so while it’s delicious it comes off either very sessionable or somewhat watery.

Enjoying it but would like something a little more substantial in body.
