STYLE Raspberry Berliner Weiss | ABV 4.2% | AVAILABILITY Year-round

Tart, Quenching, Fruity, Subtle

Raspberry jam, mild tartness, and mild cellar funk introduce themselves in the nose. From start to finish, this is a beer with mild tartness and an even raspberry flavor. A little slick and thin with a decent amount of crispness, it’s earthy, musty and peppery with dry cracker-like maltiness, some faint yeast character, and more tartness in the finish. On the lighter side for a tart brew, which only makes it that much more drinkable for me. Very sessionable without a massive puckering character, this is Funkwerks putting magic in a bottle.

750 ml bottle, bottled on 2014.01.27. Pours hazy pinkish red with a medium creamy light pink head that foes to a thin film and laces the glass some.

The aroma is strong tart raspberries.

The flavor is watery tart raspberries. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and watery.

Overall, OK watery tart raspberries.

Nice tart and dry raspberry aroma, with some light pepper and grass. Flavor is mostly raspberry as well, with some grassy and peppery notes. Cracker like malt body. The whole flavor profile is simply too subdued, with only a light tartness and a thin, watery body. My first disappointment from Funkwerks.

Poured a beautiful cloudy red body with a one finger pink head that quickly receded to a white ring leaving no lacing. Quite nice looking. Scents of raspberries, bright citrus and other red berries, a bit of a sour, acidic aroma, more lactic than yeast sourness. Overall impression is of a brightly fruity aroma with some pleasant lactic sourness underlying it. Very much a fruity Berliner Weisse aroma. Flavor begins with strong notes of sour raspberries and other red berries and a bit of sour lactic acid. This moves into a more sour middle, with the main flavors at the beginning still evident. Finish is moderate-high in sourness with notes of sour raspberries, lactic acid and sour red berries. Aftertaste is sour lactic acid, raspberries and a hint of grainy malt. Overall impression is of a very fruity beer with moderate-high sourness, very much fitting into a Berliner Weisse mold, though a bit more fruity than other fruity examples of the style. Mouthfeel is light bodied, effervescent, with high carbonation and a crisp, puckering, watery feel. Overall impression is of a light, refreshing, puckering mouthfeel that is very refreshing. Overall this is a nice Summer beer. It is light, fruity and refreshing, with a pleasant sourness, that while. It the best Berliner Weisse, is still quite nice. Its relatively high price point is it's only real drawback, otherwise it is a solid beer.

Soapy raspberry, sweet and simple. Sort of a toned down version of the New Glarus raspberry.

Kinda hard pressed to not rate this even higher, as there's something about it that just works. We deceive ourselves if we think all sours must be über-funk bombs. This is tart, yes, but eminently approachable, beginning with its wheaty/cerealish nose, accompanied by some tart, acidic, perhaps citric notes, and just a light hint of raspberry. Palate is equally restrained with the berry influence, but again it works really well, keeping the beer light, drinkable (actually downright crushable), and free to expose its other features, that light wheat malt, the lovely acidity, etc. Really a delightful Berliner -- one that is sure to become a go-to sour in m my fridge.

Pinkish color poured on draft with white rapidly diminishing head. Not very fragrant. Fruit flavor alongside tart and a bit of wheat. Great take on Berliner Weiss. Dry and crisp with decent carbonation.

Appearance - Being full of raspberries, this beer has a dark pink/red hue and is cloudy. Mildly creamy head with low retention.

Smell - A deep raspberry smell is complimented by the slightly sour smell of brett. An initial yeasty fragrance wears off with the head.

Taste - The taste is much more mild than expected from the smell. Doesn't make the face pucker or jaw tingle like lacto sours and seems to be even more mild than many brett sours. Also, the raspberry taste is not as bold as the smell would imply. Not much funkiness either. While the flavors of fruit and sour are well balanced, they are slightly too subtle, leaving a flat taste at the middle and end of each sip. This beer could benefit from more boldness in each of these flavors.

Mouthfeel - Good carbonation balance. Light, smooth, and airy as it travels around the mouth.

Overall - The appearance and mouthfeel are enjoyable. The smell yields decent expectations for the taste, which while well balanced, lacks boldness and leaves something to be desired.
