LOOKS: A rich, slighly hazy golden, with lots of carb rising, and a small white foam that leaves a mild lacing.
AROMA: Green apple, nice bit of that farmyard funk, pear, and a slight peppery note.
TASTE: White grape, green apple, funky, slight pepper flavor.
FEEL: Well carbonated, dry, and medium-ish body.
OVERALL: Tasty. Going great with the smoked mozzarella on my pizza.

Poured from 11.2oz (330ml) bottle. Bottled on 2016.09.14.
Slightly hazy golden body, thin white head fed by carbonation, scattered lacing.
On the nose is banana, spice, green apple, pear, and funk.
Taste is mix of banana, apple, with pepper and cloves.
Dry, crisp mouth feel, good level of carbonation.
Solid mix of smells and tastes for the saison type.

Poured from a single-serve bottle into a tulip.

Pours a hazy but not cloudy golden color. The head is not spectacular, but the lacing is fabulous. More than just a ring of lacing, this brew maintains a fine film of foam on the top surface.

The aroma hits the right notes. Spice and sour notes mix with funk and yeast. The barnyard is definitely present. Green apple and pear quite prominent with white pepper and banana/ester.

The flavor is heavy on the esters compared with most American takes on this style, and distinguishes this as an effort to make a classic. Banana, pear, and apple very forward in the fruit department, along with white grape. The yeast is there, but not heavy handed. White pepper and clove unmistakable at the finish. Skews a shade sweet for the style, but still enjoyable.

The mouthfeel is excellent. The carbonation is ample with good staying power and provides plenty of lift and crispness.

Overall, an excellent saison that feels more like a "home country" offering than an American imitation. Recommend.

Spectacular golden hue with full white head, the nose is quiet but hints apple skin and pears, with a touch of funky horse blanket around the edges. Flavor adds an earthy limestone quality to the mix. Delicious and satisfying.

I've heard of Funkwerks. But, they do not distribute in Chicago. So, it was a pleasure to happen upon them at Denver's thriving Union Station and enjoy the dual pleasures of a well-made beer in a well re-made place.

On tap, it arrived in an elegant tulip. Inviting. Smells were not particularly distinguished... except the malt/spicing balance was surrounded by a very pleasant yeast funk. Tastes were extraordinary. Not a melange of too many flavors, but more like a series of duets between different malts and spices... I'm guessing directed by a very talented yeast.

The trade-off of this seeming a bit low in alcohol was that the spicing could clear the palate for my next bite of a bar pizza that was well below average. (Clearly, my tongue wanted more of this ale.) The sign of an exceptional Belgian brewer is to make food taste better. Well done, Funkwerks. You specialized in the most difficult tradition and are setting the bar for American crafters to interpret the Belgian tradition. I want more !

An excellent saison. Tons of banana and clove on the nose. Light enough to enjoy, enough body to to hold up. This one is a winner!

Poured from a 11.2fl oz bottle into a tulip glass. Pale golden yellow color with small yet highly carbonated head. Slight yeast smell with hints of citrus. Flavor was mild and balanced, malt, grain, "barnyard" profile. Medium bodied, dry feel.

I am just getting into Saison style beers and while this Funkwerks was interesting, I can't help but expect more out of it, especially given the high Beer-advocate rating. Will definitely try this Saison again, maybe poured and consume at a warmer temp.
