Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Originally designed to be a hoppier version of our flagship Saison, the accidental (but fortuitous) addition of two extra bags of Munich malt balanced the hop bitterness leaving us this very unique Imperial Saison. Tropical fruit flavors coming from the unique New Zealand hop variety, Rakau.

Notes of passion fruit, mango, peach, pepper and ginger.

Pairs well with hula hooping.

This was pretty good, though the imperial added a bit of heft that you don't normally find in a saison. Interesting variant, and didn't affect the overall feel too much, but I think I like my saisons a little more balanced. I tasted more of the alcohol than the fruit, thanks to the extra malt. Decent, but not the best of what Funkwerks can do.

looks like bilge water. maybe a little lighter, but it's pretty turbid. lots of foamy head that settles pretty quickly. not a lot of lacing.

smells a bit of funk. spice. pepper. i'm not getting ginger here at all, and even the fruit is not what i would have expected from the label or the name. medicinal notes. maybe a bit of overripe strawberry.

taste is sweet. fruity. maybe peach or green mango. strawberry again.

well carbonated. warm. lingering but not clingy or viscous.

it's good.

Topic king pours a cloudy color with a long lasting and lacing head. Big spicy aroma. Taste is very spicy, yeast sugary, and a taste of hops. Good body and feel. Overall, a big saison.

This one pours a good ol' hazy NE-style IPA, hazy, thick orange look, with a small head, and a good bit of lacing.

This smells mildly funky and mostly fruity, with pineapple, strawberry, melon, and grapefruit- it's definitely quite hoppy.

This is super, super fruity- it's almost unfathomable that they didn't add any fruit here. There's so much pineapple and strawberry, not a lot of bitterness, and just a very slight hint of funk.

This is light bodied, with a super fruity mouthfeel, and a good level of carbonation.

This is tasty, but not incredibly interesting.

Thick bubbly stark white head of 3 fingers. Golden body with effervescent bubbles spiraling to the top.

Aroma of sour gummi worms, canned tropical fruit mix, canned mandarin oranges, cling peaches. I like it. Very juicy.

Flavor is pretty much the same except more rind-y, some pepper and clove, but those are definitely background noise. I'd say the closest flavor is just raw papaya rind. Hot alcohol follows.

Feel is thick and slightly resiny, but still stays true to a harsh carbonation and a spritzy finish.

Overall, it's a pretty good fruity beer I'd return to again.

Poured from a single-serve into a tulip

The brew pours a dark gold with a nice foamy head that gives way to excellent lacing. A bit disappointing is how clear it is for the style. Still, a fine looking glass of beer.

The aromas are an interesting mesh of medicinal tripel notes balanced with saison sour and funk. As promised, there is plenty of tropical fruit aroma here that the "funk" skews toward the "orange" end of the spectrum (mango and papaya). White pepper and floral spice notes finish out the presentation.

Flavors of tropical fruit are very forward, along with honeydew/musk melon flavors, then medicinal and booze notes, followed by pepper. There is some "sour" without too much hoppiness, but the funk is lacking. Overall, the brew skews sweet for the style that could have been helped by some Brett. The yeast is also just a touch heavy-handed. As a result, the brew feels more like a light, heavily carbonated tripel in many ways.

The mouthfeel is excellent. Superb carbonation lends the classic champagne-like medium-light body, and the booze provides a welcome warming note without reaching the "bite" stage.

Overall, I'm not sure I would call this a true saison. Like a merlot/shiraz wine blend, this seems more like a tripel blended with a farmhouse. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just seems off. Still, I would recommend.

Crystal-clear, light gold body; billowy, creamy, white head. Soft fruit aroma; pear; light blueberry; grass; bread crust. Old fruit and light bread flavors; brett funk and mild phenols. Heavy body with a soft sponginess; dry finish; some alcohol edginess.

A very interesting yet easy drinking saison, relatively high in alcohol but tempered with a light, cereal grain base infused with a luscious, light fruitiness.

Nice thick lacing over a beautiful thick head of foam. Nose of malt, caramel, maraschino cherry, baked pineapple. Palate of rich malt, wheat bread, hay, caramel, molasses, pineapple upside down cake crust, dried mango, plenty of cardamom and other spice, booze is pretty well balanced. Mouthfeel is full and creamy. Carbonation is bright, smooth, and creamy. Pros are high intensity of flavor, rich, subtle tropical fruit, well integrated booze. Cons are pretty rich, overly malty, not very refreshing. 90/100.

S: mostly yeast driven tropical fruit, pepper, and light biscuit.

L: brilliant amber gold with a slight copper tint under a 1" white to off-white foam cap with good retention.

T: big tropical fruit flavors seasoned with pepper, hard candy, and pineapple with an assertive bitter finish.

F: Its a well balanced beer with a medium body and medium high carbonation.

O: a well made, easy to drink Saison.
