Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Originally designed to be a hoppier version of our flagship Saison, the accidental (but fortuitous) addition of two extra bags of Munich malt balanced the hop bitterness leaving us this very unique Imperial Saison. Tropical fruit flavors coming from the unique New Zealand hop variety, Rakau.

Notes of passion fruit, mango, peach, pepper and ginger.

Pairs well with hula hooping.

this beer was so far ahead of its time, its crazy. i love it, always have, although i highly suspect the recipe has changed some since the maori king listing here, which is why i review it under this heading after a long time away from this beauty. its one of the better saisons in colorado, especially for an all the time beer, and now that its available in affordable four packs, its spot on. i think some of the tropical hops have dropped out of it though, i remember it being so alive with flavors like white grape and passion fruit that comes from strains like nelson, before nelson was even part of the vernacular. its tame compared to my memory, but i have also tasted an awful lot of beer since then, and may have numbed just a bit. still really nicely flavored with one of my favorite yeasts in the country, but the hops seem a lot less pungent and fresh and juicy. the abv also seems to have creeped up a bit, originally at 7%, listed here at 7.5%, and the bottle i just drank says 8%, but the beer seems no drier perhaps some extra grain or sugar in here to spike it, maybe slow demand or something, i dont know. the beer is still amazing, soft in feel, layered in its yeast and grain interactions, and not like most american made examples of the style. this is the beer that put funkwerks on the map back when they open, and it remains one of my favorite every day saisons. i think there is some definite batch variability though...

The Belgian yeast is more evident Than anything. Different but indeed funky.

Pours a cloudy light amber color with a thick foamy head. Head retention and lacing are awesome. Belgian yeast aroma with a slight funky edge. Fruity esters with some orange rind and maybe slight caramel. Belgian yeast taste with some peppery flavoring. Mild tropical fruit. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth. This is a re-rate from what I had before that was not that good.

The beer pours a light amber/golden orange with a fluffy and everlasting white head. The nose strives to be fruity and tropical, but has more bubble gummy yeast and booze that come through in the end. The beer's malty sweetness plays nicely with the fruity yeast and masks the abv well, but this beer plays the same note and never evolves into something more complex or interesting. It has a fluffy mouthfeel, one that's dominated by fruity yeast, but still has a hint of bitterness that lingers in the finish. This saison doesn't disappoint, but leaves much to be desired knowing what a few bugs and a barrel can do.
