BEER INFO

Brewed by:

Style: Saison / Farmhouse Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Originally designed to be a hoppier version of our flagship Saison, the accidental (but fortuitous) addition of two extra bags of Munich malt balanced the hop bitterness leaving us this very unique Imperial Saison. Tropical fruit flavors coming from the unique New Zealand hop variety, Rakau.

Notes of passion fruit, mango, peach, pepper and ginger.

Pairs well with hula hooping.

Appearance: Clear, dark golden color with tons of carbonation and a head, soapy bubble head that fades slowly with spotty lacing.

Aroma: A little sour, fruity, some funky yeast, a little banana

Taste: Strong start from the bready malt, then building sour and fruity notes. The back end takes a 90 degree turn, with lots of pepper and cardboard; its almost astringent. Finish is some-what fast with a touch of lingering fruit.

The Rest: This a complex beer that keeps changing its mind what it wants to be as it rolls around your palette. The booze becomes more pronounced at it warms, adding another dimension. Definitely worth a try but I don't know if I would buy it again.

Not bad but missing something. Very very worth a few bottles! Smooth smooth mouth feel. On the verge of being amazing! Great job brewers!

Aroma is malts/burnt caramel and undercurrents of toffee and fruit. The flavor is caramel, toffee, fruit, slightly cloying and a sourish/alcoholic finish.

Yeasty, estery, grainy. Light citrus and banana. Over carbed and a little difficult to drink.

A - Hazy golden orange colored that pours with a very large white head.
S - Fruity and spicy yeast smells mix with tropical/fruity hops. There's a lot of fruit in the smell, but I can definitely pick out pinapple, melon, and a little bit of peach. Smells very good.
T - The taste is not quite as fruity as the smell. The spicy yeast notes are stronger. There is also some ethanol flavor that is subtle, but present. (My bottle says 8% abv as another reviewer noted) There is also some bready malt sweetness that hides behind the fruity and spicy flavors.
M - Fairly high in carbonation. It is fairly dry, but there is some sweetness and not without any body - a good balance for this style in my opinion.
O - Not as fruity as I expected from the name. I thought the balance would tend more towards fruity hops, but in reality I think the yeast is more present. Overall, I think there is a nice balance between the two.

this beer was so far ahead of its time, its crazy. i love it, always have, although i highly suspect the recipe has changed some since the maori king listing here, which is why i review it under this heading after a long time away from this beauty. its one of the better saisons in colorado, especially for an all the time beer, and now that its available in affordable four packs, its spot on. i think some of the tropical hops have dropped out of it though, i remember it being so alive with flavors like white grape and passion fruit that comes from strains like nelson, before nelson was even part of the vernacular. its tame compared to my memory, but i have also tasted an awful lot of beer since then, and may have numbed just a bit. still really nicely flavored with one of my favorite yeasts in the country, but the hops seem a lot less pungent and fresh and juicy. the abv also seems to have creeped up a bit, originally at 7%, listed here at 7.5%, and the bottle i just drank says 8%, but the beer seems no drier perhaps some extra grain or sugar in here to spike it, maybe slow demand or something, i dont know. the beer is still amazing, soft in feel, layered in its yeast and grain interactions, and not like most american made examples of the style. this is the beer that put funkwerks on the map back when they open, and it remains one of my favorite every day saisons. i think there is some definite batch variability though...

The Belgian yeast is more evident Than anything. Different but indeed funky.
