750ml bottle purchased at the taproom. Bottled 10-19-2012.

Served chilled in a goblet, Mistral is a hazy golden copper color with good thick head to start. It settles quickly though, leaving a thin layer behind and a bit of lace.

Aroma is really a pleasant mix of tropical fruit and spicy Belgian yeast. It's an unusual combination of funky and fresh. Kind of like hip hop from the early 90s.

Flavor is more assertive in the malts than expected but still has that nice spicy yeast character. The hops seem more subdued than I would have expected after giving it a few sniffs. Still, it seems plenty bitter for a Belgian pale ale.

Mouthfeel is medium-light in bodied and nicely conditioned for carbonation.

Overall another solid effort from Funkwerks. Not quite ready for prime time but an enjoyable beer nonetheless.

Liking the new approach by Funkwerks of making all their pilot stuff, usually just available on tap, available in bottles at their taproom. Certainly a compromise for not offering growlers that I can appreciate. So on to the beer, a Belgian Styled Ale brewed with local Crystal and Cascade hops from Niwot Hop Farm.

A dark woody orange with a huge creamy head. The interplay between yeast and hops in this is pretty great. Flavor and aroma offer some nice natural citrus and peach sugars and juice from the hops that pairs with the yeast, giving it some funkiness and a nice prickly pepper finish. There is a also a bit of a bready malt base to this too that become more noticeable as it warms. A creamy and active mouthfeel. Overall, I really enjoyed this beer. I kinda wish they could have toned the yeast down just a touch because it felt like there were some moments where the balance would go slightly off and the yeast overshadowed the hops but, honestly, it wasn't that much of an overall issue. This is a very nice beer and another winner from Funkwerks.
