3 oz sample at AJ's Beer Warehouse.

Pours a dark amber almost brown. One inch head, even in the small glass. Good lacing.

Smells include sticky piney hops, and sticky sweet honey-like malts.

The flavor is similar. This a very malty DIPA, a large amount of both hops and malt is crammed in here. Toasty, caramelly malt at first, then a nice wave of piney, sticky, resiney hops. Some sweetness at the end from the malt again.

Medium bodied, sticky mouthfeel, low carbonation.

Starkers is better, but this a good shot at a DIPA.

I had a growler filled at the brewery. A really nice double IPA: very clear, golden appearance with grapefruit and pine in the aroma and taste. Nice malt flavor to balance out the hops; made for easy drinking. Two pints and I was definitely feeling the high ABV. I found a little bit of an alcohol burn, particularly as the beer warmed up a bit. However, nothing that would prevent me from picking up another growler sometime.

This brew was served from the tap at Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY. It arrived in a stemless chalice glowing a toasted golden caramel. It held a one finger head of crisp tan bubbles, showing nice retention. Waves of lacing were left as the bubbles receded. No haze or sediment was noted, and carbonation appeared active. The aroma gave oily citrus, sticky and piney hops with serious grit, syrupy honey nectars, muddy pale malts, thick toast, grainy sandiness, mineral, and fusel booze. Our first impression was that the flavoring showed big bittering hops, but these were very well balanced and smooth. As we sipped, dirty citric rind and piney hops started things off. These were accompanied by big metallics, boozy bite, and more raw resiny hops. The hops really drowned everything out at first, but in a good way. This pushed the pale malty toast to the peak, giving way for its own sour mash. The middle continued with alcohol wash, gritty hops, black pepper, mineral, and yeast. The finish had the smoothness of pine nuts, with stark piney hops, and soured grapefruit bite, all while holding onto that continued, resiny oiliness of fresh, green hops. The aftertaste breathed of bittered pine cone, boozy fumes, metallic yeast, and bready malts with a bit more substance than through the middle previously. The body was medium, and the carbonation was bubbly, filling the mouth with a hearty foam. The feel did remain soft, with nice slurp, smack, and cream coating the mouth. There was a quick following of gritty astringency to envelop the entire palate. The abv was appropriate, and the beer drank way easily.

Overall, what we liked best about this brew was the flavoring. The hops really exploded onto the palate giving huge bittering bite with a nice, balancing syrupy sweetness. The former caused the mouth to pucker, giving a harshness and grit to the feel. This does slow the drink down a bit. The nose remains equally as sticky and hoppy, making for a well-rounded, delicious brew.
