750ml bottle poured into a matching Westbrook snifter. The brew appears dark brown in color with a khaki head that fades leaving spotty lace.

Aroma is rich with caramel, toffee, molasses, vanilla and oak with a fruitiness somewhat suggesting apple.

Taste is also very rich with caramelized sugars, toffee, vanilla, oak and apple-like to vinous boozy warmth. A touch of oxidation across the finish.

Full body, modestly carbonated. Fantastic stuff. I know Westbrook gets a lot of love/attention for their limited release of Mexican cake. Why the hell arnt people going nuts over this beer? It is incredible blend of strong belgian meets old ale layered in wonderful barrel aged pleasantries and complexity. Holy shit, id love to have this again.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Brown amber body. No real head.

Smell - Tons of caramel. Brandy more than apple brandy, but the fruitiness is there. Vanilla.

Taste - Fruity brandy flavor up front. Then sugar. Lots of sugar. Caramel. A bit of phenolic yeastiness.

Mouthfeel - Heavy and boozy. Low carbonation.

Overall - This is really heavy and sweet. And not in the best way.

750mL bottle into a snifter
Bottled on: 2/8/13, released 10/10/13

Aged in Laird's Apple Brandy barrels for 18 months. No wild yeasts in this variant.

A: Pours a dark brown thats caramel colored when held to light. Barely a sliver of off white colored head and no lacing.

S: The barrel notes are the first aromas that come out. Huge apple brandy notes. After that the base beer comes out with a big sweetness, candied sugar, licorice, caramel/toffee, booze. Wonderful.

T: Again, apple brandy notes are huge. Very sweet as well, with candied sugar, cocoa, dark fruits/dates, toffee, artificial maple syrup. I also get some booze which compliments the sweetness nicely, and a faint bitterness that helps keep it from being cloying.

M/D: Full bodied, somewhat syrupy, carbonation is very low-bordering on flat but not quite, which makes it drink almost like a spirit. Has a very nice full body warming effect. The lack of carbonation detracts though.

O: The carbonation issue took what would be an excellent beer and knocked it down to very good. Still very much enjoyable and definitely worth checking out. The only other one Ive had so far was Rummy, which was significantly better than this one (and just flat out fantastic). Just like the Rummy this one doesnt taste Belgian at all, more like an Old Ale. Two more variants to go!

The beer comes in a dark brown with a small off white head.

The aroma is quite intriguing. It has Belgian yeast, dark fruit, plums, a dark candy sugar sweetness, along with barrel character of apple brandy and booze.

The flavor follows with lots of apple brandy, tons of toffee, and caramel. Dark fruit with plum, figs with a vanilla character from the barrels. A good amount of booze on the end.

This is an intriguing beer with Belgian quad/strong dark ale notes along with a brandy barrel character.
