Big shout out to @IPAIsaac for sharing the set on the release day.

Poured from bottle into snifter.

Look: Indistinguishable from the other variants. Pours silky black and churns up a mocha head before quickly dissipating into a rim. Does not look super oily, viscous and sticky, but far from thin.

Smell: Very similar profile to the DB version. Big cinnamon, roast malt, dark chocolate. The big difference between this and the DB version is that the booze is much more present. It is the hottest of the three variants by a good margin, but not so much so that it distracts.

Taste: The taste follows the nose as expected. All of the delicious cinnamon and dark chocolatey flavors are there. Not as sweet and not as soft as the DB version. This was surprising given the additional rye in the DB version, which I anticipated would yield a spicier variant. Then again, depending on the precise Four Roses barrel used, this is not entirely surprising given Four Roses' typically rye-present mashbills. The bourbon version just tastes slightly young compared to the DB version and will probably be a rock star with some time under its belt.

Feel: Very nice mouthfeel similar to the other variants. Not super thick, but not at all thin.

Overall: Really nice version and great compliment to the base beer. Had I opened it alone without the DB to compare it to, I'd probably be hunting another bottle of this down instead of the DB.

Got this one from 7Clutch a while back. Thanks for the set man. This stuff is fantastic!

From a bomber into a snifter
Bottled 7 August 2014

APPEARANCE: Pours out black and yields a two finger, medium looking, creamy, dark tan head with good retention. Black body with no real carbonation evident. A thick, creamy ring with touches of wisp remain until the end of the glass leaving some sticky dots of lacing down the sides of the glass. These all basically look the same. Menacing.

SMELL: Roasted grain, chilies, cinnamon, some sweet vanilla cream, oak, with notes of bourbon and coconut as well. Bold and very well balanced. These all smell great and this one is no exception.

TASTE: More barrel flavor on this one. Hotter and more bourbon and alcohol for sure. Cinnamon, oak and some lightly roasted flavors up front, then more of the adjuncts, especially the chilies, and some bourbon qualities after the swallow. A big and lingering finish of bourbon, oak, coconut, spicy chilies and some cinnamon. More alcohol and heat on this one than the other variants.

PALATE: Medium-thicker body and medium carbonation. Enough weight here, creamy smooth, goes down fine and finishes a bit sticky. Some heat lingers. These are basically all the same, which is a good thing.

OVERALL: Excellent stuff. All these variants are outstanding. This is not quite equal to the other variants in this year’s set as it’s a little hotter and more alcoholic, but not so much so that it detracts from the experience. Again, thanks heaps 7clutch. We all enjoyed these immensely.

Reviewing the Four Roses Bourbon Barrel Aged Mexican Cake from Westbrook Brewing Company out of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.

Score: 93

September 2014 vintage bottle (pink/red label) served in a stemmed Mikkeller & Friends glass and enjoyed on 10/15/14. Thank you Paul for sharing this treat!

Appearance: Ink black color with a thin layer of khaki head that settles to a ring around the glass. Poor lacing (even less residual head than the tequila version), okay retention of what little lacing there is. Nice oily legs. 4/5

Smell: Oak, campfire roasted vanilla, caramel, and pepper. No chocolate in the nose for this variant. A dash of cinnamon too, but it was more prominent in the tequila variant in my opinion. 4.5/5

Taste: Milk chocolate and sweet bourbon flavors, with a little alcohol bite on the finish. Virtually no pepper flavor/heat here, unless I am mistaking the alcohol heat for spiciness. There's a crisp accent upfront, but it quickly dissipates. As it warms up and layers, a kiss of tropical fruity pepper character comes through on the finish (but maybe I am just seeking it out?) along with a bit of spiciness -- though less than the tequila version. Nicely complex mix of flavor. 4.25/5

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, a bit more carbonation than tequila, but still appropriate for the style (low, but not under-carbonated). Dry on the finish. Drier and a touch sweeter than the tequila version, but still very balanced. 4/5

Overall: Delicious, but not a cannot miss beer in the vein of Jack Daniels Barrel Aged Mexican Cake, which had more depth and punch to it (and was better integrated to boot).

Cost: $30 for a 22 oz (bomber) bottle (2 per person limit).

All of these seemed a little underwhelming compared to last year's variants.

22oz bottle share poured in to a snifter

Pours pitch black with a one-finger creamy tan head that retains nicely, eventually settling to a thin layer on top. Classic Mexican aroma of cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon & chili. The bourbon barrel aroma is subtle, but noticeable. Upon tasting, I first notice that the chili heat has subdued while in the barrel, which is a welcomed change. The spices seems to have blended in the barrel, providing an extra element of coconut. Light oak barrel and a hint of bourbon follow, before finishing with more chocolate and cinnamon. Medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and finish. Barrel aging has made this beer better IMO. I still prefer the Double Barrel version though.
