Big shout out to @IPAIsaac for sharing the set on the release day.

Poured from bottle into snifter.

Look: Indistinguishable from the DB Cake. Pours silky black and churns up a mocha head before quickly dissipating into a rim. Does not look super oily, viscous and sticky, but far from thin.

Smell: This is where the real difference is from the other two variants becomes apparent. The tequila barrel is very evident--not in a boozy or acetic way, but in the way a nice glass of Don Q might smell after your last sip. The uniquely tequila-y floral and herbal aromas become more present as the beer warms and are especially evident when contrasted side by side with the DB and Bourbon variants. This unique aromatic quality unfortunately comes at the expense of the cinnamon blast and other notes, which become more subdued.

Taste: This version has all of the same notes as the DB version--cinnamon, dark chocolate, etc--but they are all slightly muted. The floral/herbal notes are present on the palate but do not detract. it finishes long and the pepper kick seems less affected than the other adjuncts and still very present. This barrel treatment transformed the base beer the most out of the three variants, which I suspect will make it the most polarizing of the variants.

Feel: Very nice mouthfeel similar to the other variants. Not super thick, but not at all thin.

Overall: Very nice treatment and I think a huge success for Westbrook. A tequila treatment could have potentially been a disaster if it was heavy-handed and unbalanced (sometimes two great tastes do not taste great together). This beer has enough muscle to take the tequila, but it reminds me more of two strangers figuring out a way to live together as roommates then it does a meeting of soulmates. While the unique quality of the tequila added a fun dimension, it pushed some of the other adjuncts to the back seat, so for me it fell a little short of the DB version.

Got these ones from 7clutch a while back. Cheers for the awesome surprise man. We loved the crap out of these!

From a bomber into a snifter
Bottled 15 August 2014

APPEARANCE: Pours out black and yields a two finger, medium looking, creamy, dark tan head with good retention. Black body with no real carbonation evident. A thick, creamy ring with touches of wisp remain until the end of the glass leaving some sticky dots of lacing down the sides of the glass. These all basically look the same. Menacing.

SMELL: Roasted grain, chilies, cinnamon, some sweet vanilla cream, oak, with notes of tequila as well. Bold and very well balanced. Just phenomenal stuff on the nose. The 2014 variants have picked up where the 2013 ones left off.

TASTE: Roasted grain, oak and some cinnamon up front. Flavorful stuff. Big finish of cinnamon, spicy chilies, tequila notes, oak, sweet vanilla cream and some nice bitter dark chocolate as well. Chilies are excellently balanced and well integrated, while the tequila barrel adds just enough of the spirit and oak to make it even more complex. Surprisingly delicious.

PALATE: Medium-thicker body and medium carbonation. Enough weight here, creamy smooth, goes down fine and finishes a bit sticky. Some heat lingers. These are basically all the same, which is a good thing.

OVERALL: This is excellent stuff and might actually be the best variant of the set this year. Surprisingly enough, the tequila barrels are subtle and add just enough added complexity to an already complex and decadent beer. Lots of good stuff going on here and everything is very well balanced. Cheers again 7clutch. Quality stuff.

draft at westbrook.

dark brownish black, very appropriate thick beige head. huge Tequila aroma, much different than other variants. taste is literally unreal. so unique. Tequila is real and you need to be a fan, but the drinkability is insane. crushable is the right word here, its that smooth. on par with any other imp stout in the world, westbrook can brew some legitimate stouts. my favorite of this years variants. insanely good

Sample at Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen 2017, green session. Aroma is spicy with cinnamon, nutmeg and some bright celery notes. Taste has cinnamon, some spicy booze and a light pepper heat.

same nose but a touch more chocolate and spice than the base brew (cactus not chili, though some chili) . Taste however is a bit more chocolate forward. Spice is a bit muted in chili notes but cactus is present and a hint of wood. A touch (very slight) less carbonation. Awesome.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Black body. Medium khaki head. Medium collar.

Smell - Tequila barrel is pretty strong. Chocolate and cinnamon. Tequila always yields a weird flavor.

Taste - The tequila is... strange. Chocolate. Tequila diminishes some of the cinnamon. Woody and fudgy. Light spice in the back.

Mouthfeel - Medium heavy. Boozy.

Overall - I always expect tequila barrel to be nauseating, but it isn't. It just isn't necessarily an addition to the base beer.
