Big shout out to @IPAIsaac for sharing the set on the release day.

Poured from bottle into snifter.

Look: Pours silky black and churns up a mocha head before quickly dissipating into a rim. Does not look super oily, viscous and sticky, but far from thin.

Smell: Cinnamon blast, cocoa, roast, hint of the pepper and sweetness more than booziness from the barrel. Really fantastic. Sweetness and whisky tones become even more prominent as it warms.

Taste: Extremely well-balanced and follows the nose. Cinnamon, dark chocolate. Finishes nice with a tickle of the habenero heat and retains the kick much more than than the BA Huna variants (not surprising given Huna's milder pepper and the same difference noted in the base beers). Finish is long. Out of the three variants, I found that the barrel character in the DB version harmonized best with the base beer and accentuated the adjuncts.

Feel: Very nice mouthfeel with a bit of welcome carb that allows the flavors to dance. Thick enough to provide a long finish, but not super chewy. Carb completely vanishes after about 30min of slow sipping, leaving a thicker coat.

Overall: My personal favorite of the three new beers, all of which are worth a try. It holds its own with DBH and BA Abraxas for best in class for the mexican/chili style (in my hum ble opinion). I was quite surprised at how much I liked it given my strong preference for regular Huna/Abraxas over reg Mexican Cake.

On tap at the release.

This beer is incredibly silky smooth and creamy. Tons of chocolate and sweet vanilla from the beans and the bourbon. A little surprised thwy went with bourbon and rye whiskey and not a rum barrel in there but it definitely works!

It's thicker than regular mex cake and still has all the enjoyable features.

This beer is ENTIRELY overrated. It tastes of old peppers. No spices or anything. It's very lackluster. I remember regular 2013 cake being better by far. This is a huge let down.

Had this at a share on 8/29. Right away, the MC smell hits you. Cinnamon and vanilla. The barrel treatment serves to smooth out the pepper burn that regular MC has. Was not boozy at all. I could drink this easier than a regular MC.

Smooth, cinnamon , very little heat from the peppers. The rye definitely stands out.

My favorite of the '14 variants, of my favorite adjunct imperial stout.

In general, the beer offers a lovely smooth whiskey flavor with the cinnamon popping out at parts with a light spice quality. The beer is loaded with fudge and chocolately sweetness.

An absolutely killer.

Had at Huna day poured from tap. Dark chocolate body, smell is muted but not overly boozy. Taste builds after sipping and the barrel aging adds to the smooth finish which ends with a slight pepper after taste. Really special beer, awesome

Got the entire set from 7clutch. Amazing find man. Really appreciate the extra effort you put in here. Cheers!

From a bomber into a snifter
Bottled 26 August 2014

APPEARANCE: Pours out black and yields a two finger, medium looking, slightly foamy, dark tan head with good retention. Black body with no real carbonation evident. A thick, creamy ring with touches of wisp remain until the end of the glass leaving some sticky dots of lacing down the sides of the glass. These all basically look the same, but the head here is a touch looser than we’re used to from these guys.

SMELL: Roasted grains, lots of caramel, toffee, oak, sweet cream, bourbon, coconut, light spicy notes, some cinnamon and chilies too. Bold and well integrated. More caramel and toffee than the other two variants. Just decadent.

TASTE: Some bourbon, oak, chilies and some caramel sweetness up front. Oak at the swallow with some more lovely bourbon, chilies, cinnamon, sweet vanilla, roasted malts and dark chocolate. Coconut sweetness ties in with the rest of the sweet flavors very nicely. Some chili heat and alcohol lingers on the palate as well. Decadent stuff.

PALATE: Similar to the others but a touch lighter in weight perhaps and slightly higher levels of carbonation. Medium body, creamy on the palate, goes down with a bit of a burn and scratch with some heat lingering on the palate.

OVERALL: Just excellent again. Decadent aromas and flavors all over the place, and everything is extremely well integrated. The slightly lighter feel here keeps it from top spot out of the bunch, but that’s a moot point. Killer stuff all around, and a killer series to boot. Thanks again 7clutch. The beer night of 2014 right here.

All of these seemed a little underwhelming compared to last year's variants.
