I'm not sure how this is considered a Belgian Quad. Absolutely nothing about this beer is representative of the style. If you ignore that, it's a damn fine beer. Dark and viscous, big-bodied, loads of chocolate and fudge, tons of oak and red wine complexity. If I had to guess the beer blindly, I would immediately identify it as a wine barrel aged stout. The barrel treatment really compliments this beer well.

L - Pours a murky brown to the point of almost black body. Barely a one finger light brown head teases to come forth. Minimal lacing and no retention.

S - Candied sugars, oak, ripe cherries and bakers chocolate.

T - The taste really follows the nose. Nice red wine character overall. Not much else to say here.

F - Thin bodied and low carbonation.

O - I like it better than the bourbon barrel aged, simply for the fact that it isn't overly cloying sweet. But, it's still thin for a quad with a low amount of carbonation.

Very dark, nearly black pour. Seemed slightly viscous for a quad. Probably picked up a lot of color from the barrel/residual wine. The flavor of the beer is dominated by a dark fruit flavor that begins on an interesting note, but quickly grows into something that is hardly palatable. From cold, to sitting out for an hour or more, the flavor did not improve.

Pours of very dark brown. Huge caramel sweetness in the nose. Smells like a barrel aged old ale or English Barleywine. Sweet, with a red wine finish. Nicely balanced.

Bottle shared last night at Umberto's tasting.

Pours a dark reddish brown, with no head or lacing.

Smells like candied sugar, red wine, vinous grapes, cherry, and chocolate.

For a beer in the barrel for 3 years, this surprisingly hasn't picked up any weird off flavors. Very smooth and creamy flavored, a good burst of vinous, sweet and cherry-like red wine, some chocolate, candied sugar, and no hint of booze whatsoever. This doesn't exactly feel like a quad, it's more just a red-wine based strong ale of indeterminate type.

This is syrupy, and pretty thick, with a lower level of carbonation. It's very drinkable despite the big flavors.

This is a really outstanding achievement by Westbrook.
