Poured from a growler into a tulip glass
Look: Caramel brown with about an inch of light brown head on top.
Smell: Barleywines are already pretty boozy in their taste, and with this one being aged in rum barrels smells quite strongly of booze. Malts and dark fruit are still present, but I had to really concentrate to get through the acidic smell of alcohol.
Taste: 1st sip completely punched me in the face. Despite the smell I was not prepared for the intense bite that the alcohol hit me with. I was worried that this beer would be a disappointment, but as I continued on it became more mellow with every sip I took. By the time I was halfway through my glass, the burn of the alcohol was completely on the backburner and was replaced by a smooth but strong taste of figs, dates and malts, as well as some molasses at the end.
Feel: At first it burned as it went down, but as with the taste became much smoother on my throat as I continued to drink.
Overall: Pretty solid beer. Admittedly, I am not the biggest fan of BA barleywines (whether it be rum or bourbon). I think barleywines are intense enough and the extra alcohol can sometimes push the taste over the top. This beer is teetering on that line, but does not cross over into my "too intense" zone. I recommend drinking this at about 40-45 degrees Fahrenheit so to minimize the burn and experience the full taste and smooth mouthfeel.
