Appearance: Pours a clear goldenstraw with a modest head; dots of lacing hang around

Smell: Like a Margarita, with the lime, the salt and Tequila tones

Taste: Salt and lime tones forward with the Tequila character building, through the middle; there is some sweetness that blends into the salty citrusy elements, after the swallow; briny and salty with the lime bringing home the finish

Mouthfeel: Light body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Westbrook has created some remarkable mocktails with the cocktail gose series

The sour German style ale of Leipzig takes on a natural citrusy acidity and salinity that hints toward tropical cocktails. So it won't take much for the brewers at Westbrook to nudge the style over to the straight up margarita types of flavor, a nudge that they execute beautifully.

Pale gold and skirted with a cottony white swath of sea foam, the beer's briny, citusy nose evokes a sense of mouth watering a mere sniff. Lighlty earthy and fruity the sour pang of acidity plays peppery on the scent. Light and doughy, the beer's early impressions come through like sourdough and saltwater taffy.

But then the margarita character blossoms on the middle palate as its sweetness stews lightly and folds in the taste of agave, nutty oak and delicate pastry. Natural acidity of lime seems exacerbated by the margarita character while other aspects of lemon, cider and white wine simmer underneath. A brisk salinity emboldens the taste of citrus and provides a rounded mouthfeel heading into finish.

Both juicy and dry, the medium light ale is moderate for sour ale but is acutely acidic and breaming with lime and salt. Savory and refreshing all at once, the ale finish quick on the palate with weathered citrus and a kiss of burlap over a soft bed of sourdough that returns once more.

Poured from a 32 ounce growler filled ~an hour ago into a BrewDog cervoise glass.
A: Clear, copper, and effervescent with light head.
S: It smells very salt, aggressively citric, and lightly artificial. Almost exactly like sour mix.
T: Light, clean, sour, and pleasant. This is an easy-drinking, really pleasant beer. It reminds me of key lime pie, down to the light sweetness of meringue. The finish is wheat-sweet and malic-bitter. When I burp, it tastes like tequila.
M: Crisp, tart, engaging, moreish.
O: Do you like sour things? Drink this. Do you like that lime juice they sell in bottles at the grocery store, but also wheat beers? Drink this. Do you want something funky-sophisticated and elegantly European? Look elsewhere.

Slap another win in Westbrook's column. As if their standard Gose wasn't solid enough, they went and made a margarita beer out of it - and it works! If I manage to score another bottle I'm pretty sure I'll do a frozen version, and throw on some Jimmy Buffet!
