Hazy, nectarine colored body crowned with a thick, frothy head; big globs of sticky foam clinging to the inside of the glass. . Intense aroma of sweet orange, pineapple and grapefruit. Well-balanced pit fruit juiciness with intense yet rather soothing hop bitterness; light breadiness and Belgian yeast-like base; a modicum of alcohol presence. Heavy body with a velvety, spongy feel on the palate; starts out rather juicy and wet but ultimately finishes on the dry-side.

A very well-made, deeply complex and finely balanced American IPA.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from a 12 oz. can into a J. Wakefield OG teku glass.

A: Light gold and hazy, with a big (two or three fingers) of white foamy head with good retention. Lots of visible carbonation bubbles.

S: Citrus – orange and grapefruit – and tropical fruits. Light cracker malts. Milder resin, dank, and melon. Nice, though maybe not a crazy huge nose.

T: Orange-forward citrus and tropical fruits again. Biscuit malts with enough heft to make me think wheat – I’m assuming that’s the rye though. Just a bit of caramel sweetness that I could have done without. Hints of dank and melon in the hop profile, and it finishes with more citrusy bitterness in the hang – though there is a mild lingering caramelly sweetness as well.

M: Full-bodied for an IPA, but not obnoxiously so. Good small bubble carbonation sensation, and the alcohol presence seems about average.

O: This could definitely be in a rotation if I was living somewhere it was distributed. It’s different enough from a lot of the innumberable other IPAs sitting on shelves to keep things interesting, but still a tasty, fruity hoppy beer that would pair with food well, or be a beer to sail through the night with. Nothing crazy, but quite enjoyable.

a big boy version of one of my dessert island beers?! yes please! this sort of half imperialized version of one claw is an awesome brew, seemingly quite a bit hoppier and fuller bodied than the original, but still scary easy drinking, absurdly fresh tasting, and with a ton of unique character for being relatively simple in its composition. for me, aside from the additional body, the biggest difference here is the hop complexion, it seem far more nuanced and layered than citra alone, which is what i always get from one claw. it seems more southern hemisphere, pineapples and white peaches and a different type of oiliness, really inviting in nose and taste, and still only middle of the road bitter, if that. i still get plenty of fresh pale rye malt, but this time it seems supported by a bigger barley backing, maybe a bit more crystal type in here, but this isnt rich or sweet. it sure is frothy and expansive in texture though. peppery earthy rye spice meet tropical and highly botanical and fresh hops, citrus and melon and pine, all in balance, a seriously beautiful beer, a gold standard really for what this is. i heard there is a three claw too!!!

Fairly good IPA. Pours a hazy yellow color from a 12 oz can into a pint glass. Big foamy white head and thick bands of lacing on the glass. Excellent head retention. Aroma is fairly weak, some mild citrus hops. Flavor is better. Nice balance between moderately bitter citrus and floral hops and slightly sweet bready malt. Mouthfeel is moderately rich and is crisp and somewhat bitter. Not a memorable IPA but solid enough and well worth a try.

12 oz can. Pours deep hazy golden with tall, long-lasting, fluffy white head, nice lacing and lively carbonation. Aroma is of citrusy hops, tropical fruit and bready malt. Body is medium and crisp. Taste is similar to aroma. Finish is long and hoppy. Overall good brew.

This hazy unfiltered IPA delivers beneath its golden colour a tropical fruits mix bowl impression along some rye bread. The use of oats make this one very silky. Nice one!

Pours an unclear yellow, with fine, soapy foam.

Smell is heavy on the piney resin, with a hint of pepper and spruce.

Taste starts with some pepper, and then hits with a wallop of bitterness. Lots of piney resin and citru, but never overpowering.

Mouthfeel is medium, sticky and well carbonated.

Overall, a terrific IPA, where the rye really shines.

Hazy bright yellow color with frothy off-white head. Aroma has spicy hops with some astringent pineapple notes. Taste follows with bittersweet hop flavors, spicy notes, pineapple and some sweet grapefruit. Medium plus body, soft carbonation. Overall it's a really nice IPA, smooth and easy drinking.

Poured on tap at the brewery into a willybecher glass

A: murky hazy turbid yellow tan body with barely a wisp of a white head.

S: I think the rye pops more in the nose then you have papaya mango and pineapple.

T: the Rye is right up front followed by a little spiciness and then some fruit pineapple mango.

M: medium bodied a little chewy lowish carbonation.

O: I'm not blown away by it. I like it but I think one claw is better the flavors are more subtle.

Poured from the can into a Spiegelau IPA glass. Canned August 18th 2017.

Large frothy, and off white colored thick head out of the can. Soapy fine in appearance, but claims a giant fist height and good staying power, with a slow sink down. Creamy top, but more soapy make up, resting on a opaque and pale grapefruit yellow and muted orange body color.

Soft hop aroma, slightly hints grass with herbs and a bit of tropical mango/pineapple like quality on the hop angle. Slightly diverse hop angle, with a touch of spicy malt, and a hint of zest. Fairly solid.

Palate yields quite a bit of tropical hop notes, and a touch of bitterness on first sip. Very syrupy and somewhat sweet malt backbone going on here, creating a very sticky mango like flavor, but with some earth bitterness to contrast at least. Finishes quite fruity, but also a hint wet strangely with all the thick syrup flavors and tones.

Comes off like a syrupy and sticky imperial, but with a decent hop profile at least.

Brother, this comes a hazy, juicy, unfiltered east coast IPA.

A) Pours a bright but totally hazed yellow color, tumbling with sediment and sporting an inch of foamy, long-lasting head that laces bunches.

S: Juicy aroma of tropical and citrus fruit, fresh, on top of rye and peppery hops.

T: Tastes of rye, bright hops, juicy tropical fruit on top of light malt notes. Lemon and pepper predominate. Bigger than 1 claw. It's working for me.

F: Amply carbonated beer with peppery, cleansing dry finish.

O: Must try. Found at Malt & Mold NYC - recommended beer bodega on 2nd Ave & 22 St.

I'm trying this at my Bestie's in Charlotte. It poured a clear golden with white head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent had hints of spice and pine. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink. The mouthfeel was medium in body with good carbonation. Overall it was a solid beer.

Appearance: pours a light orange color with a 1" head that lasts a long time. Thick lace paints the glass.

Smell: very mild tropical fruit aroma.

Taste: caramel, pineapple, grapefruit, mango, and a spicy bitterness.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Crisp to start, less crisp and and a bit dry late.

Overall: an easy to drink rye IPA that is flavorful and looks great too.

Picked up a four-pack from the Hilton Head Kroger this past Sunday for $10.99. Canned on 6-2-17.

Beer poured a hazy orange with a nice white head upon the initial pour.

Nose has bright notes of citrus and tropical hops.

Taste is very good. Grapefruit is forward, mango and papaya are present over a pale malt base that is partially rye based. Finish is non-abrasive and clean.

Feel is classic Westbrook (as i have come to enjoy this week :)). Very light bodied and so easy to sip on.

Overall you cannot go wrong with this brew if you are a hop head. Definitely purchase it if you happen upon it!

This beer pours a hazy golden orange color with an absolutely massive, pillowy, bright white head. Using a pretty light pour by my standards, the head ended up about a half inch over the top of my Sierra Nevada Spiegelau IPA glass. Retention is excellent and there are many thick, soapy, hanging rings of lacing left all over the glass.

Smell is very bright and tropical. Mango, pineapple, melon and grapefruit burst out of the glass with a touch of spicy rye in the background.

Taste is the same. A cornucopia of fresh tropical fruit explodes onto the palate from the jump while there is just a hint of the spice from the rye on the finish.

Feel is light, soft and very smooth. I would say it is a touch under carbonated, but the slight prickliness from the rye does a good job of covering that up.

Overall this is an excellent beer. I know this is going to sound strange, but I bought the 4 pack when it was 8 days old, drank one of them that day and another the next and was left fairly unimpressed. It was a good beer, but the rye seemed to dominate and mask the hop flavors. Well fast forward 3 weeks and call this beer Future because the mask is off. Somehow the hop flavors pushed themselves to the forefront and the rye is left in the background rounding out the beer. This review is for the beer I drank at around a month old. I would definitely say that is the sweet spot for this one and I will be drinking my last one very soon.

Came in a standard pint a slight hazed burnt orange-like color with a thinner head atop.Big grapefruit in the nose just real fresh and strong to go along with deep mango fruitiness,a bit of nutty malt shows thru as well.Almost creamy in the mouth, light carbonation and medium bodied.Starts out with a bitter smack of grapefruit on the palate then more tropical fruits follow,a decent amount of spicy rye comes into play as well, just really well rounded flavors.I'am big fan of all things rye and love the rye ipa's out there and this is no exception.

Canned on 5/18/17; consumed on 6/3/17.

A: Poured from the can into a Palm tulip/snifter-type glass. Body is hazy tangerine-orangey-golden with a 1-finger white head that retains well. Good foamy lacing left behind.

S: Very nice nose of juicy tropical fruit (pineapple) and citrus (grapefruit).

T: Juicy, NE-style IPA characteristics. Citrus - oranges, mandarin oranges and grapefruit; and tropical fruits abound (primarily pineapple). I'm really not getting the rye, at least not up front. Maybe as a touch of drying bite at the finish, but it's quite modest. Very nice tasting IPA.

M: Medium in heft, and juicy. Carbonation is modest and fine.

O: This is excellent.

Super smooth for a rye beer- there's a bite, but it's after a long mellow dry rye flavor. Beautifully balanced with a tangy aftertaste. Much better in my book than One Claw.

Nice combination of fruit and rye on the nose. Hazy light golden color. Deliciously balanced flavor. This beer won't amaze you or anything but it's just so solidly good in every way. Another great beer from Westbrook, one of my favorite breweries.

Pours a hazy golden yellow; nice 2 fingers worth of head. Aroma is more tropical fruits; citrus; than there is rye, not getting much spice character from this. Tastes very similar to smell, grapefruit peel, citrus fruits, tropical notes, maybe a touch of rye lingering somewhere in there but not much as One Claw. Nice, dry crisp carbonation here leading to an easy drinking beer. Really enjoyed this by Westbrook. One of their better hoppy offerings in my opinion. Wish they'd do more IPAS because this shows they can brew great ones.
