Fast fizzy dark tan head disappeared before I could take the photo!; incomplete ring, no lace; black body with grayish ruby edges; medium legs. Nose is chilies and cinnamon on first whiff; red wine becomes more prevalent as beer warms. Chocolate, hot peppers, oak, musty/grapey dark fruit; cinnamon and nutmeg in the background, but delfly present; spicy vanilla/chocolate finish. Medium minus body; light carbonation; burn from habaneros on tip of tongue; mucho warmth in mouth from 10.5% and peppers; vinous, tannic feel that is drying in the finish. Overall, pleasing complex layers of dark fruit/grape barrel flavors complimenting the chocolate semi sweet fudgy, spicy hot base that is the essence of Mexican Cake; subtle cinnamon and nutmeg flavors enhance rather than distract; world class - I could drink all day!

Sample at Mikkeller Beer Celebration Copenhagen 2017, green session. Aroma is quite spicy with cinnamon and nutmeg notes. Taste is dusty, acidic with light wine notes in the background, fudge and spices.

L: pours black with a slight film of head around the glass edge.
S: sweet red wine with chilies and cinnamon 3rd. I'm a chili and cinnamon junky, this seems very good.
T: wow, very good. This brings the chili heat and cinnamon flavor to the forefront. Big chocolate after taste, the wine I think actually brings a chocolate covered wine sweetness, man this is awesome. I really love the chili heat finish in this one.
F: the chilies are popping! I love the chili heat after it goes down. This is very creamy and smooth.

Black in color with a tan head.

I am going to compare this to the other BA cakes I have had. This one was thinner than the others from this year. I don't know why, but it just didn't have the thick oily feel like Cake normally does. The peppers were there, but a not very spicy. Cinnamon showed. The red wine barrels added a tannin and dark fruit/grape flavor. It all worked well, but I remember like the 2013 red wine cake better. I prefer the Willett to this, but this was better than the tequila cake.

650ml bottle, served in a snifter glass. Pours a dark brownish black body, one finger light brown head, good retention, thin collar, no lacing. Smells absolutely wonderful, the cinnamon really pops out of this one compared to the bourbon variant; the cinnamon plays well with a light tannic presence, milk chocolate, light vanilla, heavy dark chocolate and a good bit of spicy pepper and light vegetal presence. Flavour is absurdly complex; the red vinous character really seems to bring out the adjuncts so well; the cinnamon and vanilla pop quite a bit here, with a good milk chocolate presence. The red wine lingers in the background the entire time; it never dominates or hits you over the head to tell you that it's there but at the same time, you don't have to look for it. Wonderful complexity. Mouthfeel is however lacking; it is on the thinner side of medium; presumably from the dryness of the cabernet, which lingers on the finish along with a nice dose of cinnamon. Man, while this beer was thin and in that respect pales in comparison to the vaunted 2013 vintage, this was a wonderfully complex beverage that made me want to keep drinking it. I can't say the same for the other variants I've had.
