22oz bottle poured into a tulip

A-pours a deep black color with a one-finger foamy khaki colored head that reduces to a ring around the edge of the glass

S- plenty of barrel notes on the nose, aromas of dark raspberry and blackberry, as well as caramel and wood. The adjuncts pop through beyond the barrel, lending cinnamon, cocoa, vanilla and a blend of coffee and pepper that add a green pepper note

T- huge port notes up front, plenty of dark blackberry, raspberry, fig, even some currant notes. Mid-palate brings out some pepper notes and coffee that pop through, that gives that signature 'green' note. Undertones of cinnamon, chocolate and vanilla. The finish gives more port, fig, raisin and blackberry. Lingers of pepper and coffee

M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that turns creamy into the finish

O- outstanding port notes throughout, the barrel really comes through on this one

Tan head. Very dark head. Black color.

Port heavy. Reminds me of Apple brandy. Sweet. The peppers and spice show in the finish. Chocolate and fudge. The spice really builds after 5 oz or so. I enjoy that a lot. I still prefer bourbon over this. Thick, full bodied.

650ml bottle, port barrel aged, poured into a stemless wine glass.

The beer pours a super deep jet black color, thick and viscous with a firm finger of caramel head that has good retention and a few spots of soapy lace. The aroma is very heavy on the port barrel, tons of rich raisin and dark pitted fruit, hot habanero and chocolate with light cinnamon and rich grain. The flavors are nice, the cinnamon and the port barrel make for almost a Dr. Pepper like flavor that is okay, but perhaps not what I’m hoping for in a stout, the chocolate and oak are nice, but this beer is a bit muddled and not so balanced. The mouthfeel is a bit thin and overcarbonated, still a hefty thicker medium body but has a bubbly and abrasive bite at the finish.

Verdict: A good barrel aged stout from Westbrook, but perhaps too much time in the port? Adds a ton of rich stone fruit but the cinnamon clashes for my palate, it’s a good beer yes, but too muddled rather than balanced.
