Appearance - The beer poured black with a reddish tint and a dark mocha head. Oh man, the floaties made the beer look swampy.

Smell - Light, creamy coconut led the way. The heat of the spice was also evident.

Taste - This beer combined so many things I love. The coconut was strong at the front, but the heat gradually built and cancelled the sweetness. The dark chocolate gave a nice sense of balance between the sweet and the heat. My one complaint was the lack of a strong barrel presence.

Mouthfeel - The coconut smoothed the beer with minimal carbonation.

Overall - I suspect there are better Mexican Cake variants, but I like this one.

Appearance: Pours dark as night with a modest beige head; squiggles of lacing linger

Smell: The coconut is quite pronounced in the aroma and clearly complements the chocolate and Bourbon tones

Taste: Chocolate and coconut forward with the Bourbon and Mexican cake spices emerging; after the swallow, the hot pepper makes an impact but not as powerfully as in the base beer

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation

Overall: Coconut is a complicated adjunct but it is handled well with this variant

Coconut floaties are never a bad thing. This is the most coconut forward stout I have ever experienced. The nose is rich dark chocolate and coconut with bourbon coming in late. Taste is coconut forward without any lingering coconut oil you find with some coconut stouts. Really well done and an enjoyable sipper.
