Style: Witbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.00%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
This beer, inspired by the flavors of Southeast Asian cuisine, is a twist on the classic Belgian witbier style. Instead of the traditional coriander and orange peel spicing regimen, we add fresh lemongrass, ginger root, and a dash of Sorachi Ace hops. The result is a wonderfully refreshing ale with notes of lemon candy, citrus fruit, and a slight spiciness from the ginger. Best served at 45˚F in a tulip or wine glass.

A- Can into a tall chalice with a very slightly hazed medium golden body. The cap is white, thick and rather creamy in consistency exhibiting pretty good retention. A few wide sheets of lacing stick around.

S- Mostly just a classic Witbier yeast aroma with heavy spices like peppercorn alongside faint citrus, crusty wheat grains, fresh bread, coriander and a hint of ginger. For me the adjuncts could donate some of this but not enough to differentiate from what Witbier yeast provides.

T- On the mild side especially after the aroma provided quite a bit of strength. Dilute notes of peppercorn, clove, coriander and lemony citrus lead things off with vanilla sweets, ginger, banana, wheat bread and cooking herbs beyond that. A breadth of flavors but overall it is soft on the palate.

MF- Extremely silky and creamy texture to a medium body; just superbly smoothed out by that consistency. The carbonation is rather high but as mentioned the body keeps it in check. Soft bitterness in the finish.

The lemon aspect of the brew's added ingredients comes through the most with general spiciness and herbal feelings throughout. I don't need a barrage of flavors but considering the name and the ingredients added I was expecting more strength of flavor. A good brew but it comes off just a bit too mild.

As a sucker for all thing Thai, a special take on the Belgian witbier style lands it to spice differently. Forego the floral fruitiness of the classic style and layer with wheat beer instead with ginger, lemongrass and herbal hops and we have a spicier, exotic and sushi-worthy ale.

Milky straw and capped with a delicate sea foam swath, the beer's spicy scent awakens the senses with the piquant character of ginger and citrus with a delicate doughy backdrop. Its taste is creamy and semi-sweet with hints of sugar cookie, confectioner's sugar and a suggestion of hard lemon candy.

As the sweetness drifts and the spiciness tightens, the beer trends drier and grainier. The brightness of lemon, grassiness, white wine and tart green apple refresh the palate while the balance of tea-like herb, frehly grated ginger and the lemony bitterness of Sorachi Ace hops give the taste a playful wine-like tang to complement the peppery bitterness.

Medium-light, the witbier trends drier and spicier than usual, celebrating its raw grain character through its spice and hop warmth and bite. Lemongrass and ginger linger briefly longer than the malt with a quick finish and brisk aftertaste- ideal for the most delicate but complex sushi dishes.

Interesting take on a witbier. The traditional citrusy flavors are still there, albeit somewhat muted by the lemongrass and ginger. A smooth drinker, with pleasant carbonation, clean flavors, and a nice ginger zing on the back end. Like most of Westbrook's beers, this one is quite good.

First had poured from 12-oz. can into nonic pint. White Thai is filtered contrary to style, but the southeast Asian spices substituted for the traditional coriander and orange peel work very well.
