Style: Kellerbier / Zwickelbier

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.50%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Zwickelbier, a rarely seen German lager style, gets it name from the sampling valve on a fermentation tank (“Zwickel” in German). It is unfiltered, relatively low in alcohol, and served very soon after fermentation is complete. For this reason, Zwickelbiers usually don’t make it very far from the brewery where they are produced. Our version is brewed with 100% German Pils and Vienna malts and Czech Saaz hops. A cold fermentation with a classic Bavarian lager yeast lets the pure flavors of the malt and hops shine through. Get out your biggest beer stein for this one!

light pour, golden straw in color with a tight fizzy head of white foam that quickly gained ground and rose up through the glass. Nice an light aroma, clean, light spice and yeast notes, hints of light citrus, wheat, light cloves, really well done. As I take the first sips, clean, crisp flavor, tight citrus, rich light grains, spakrling carbonation. Really it just worked. Light bready finish left a light touch of flavor on the palate but mostly clean after the last sip.

not a style many are into but if done right can be wonderful. this is a classic here.

Served from growler into a Spaten Optimator dimpled mug. Poured golden yellow with a half finger pure white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, wheat, rye, fruit, and subtle banana. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruit, wheat, rye, subtle banana, subtle citrus, and metallic on the followthrough. It had a light feel on the palate with medium high carbonation. Overall this was a decent brew. The aroma on this one was quite nice and complex. The flavor on this one was pretty nice, but the metallic aftertaste is my only gripe with this brew. While it is not abrasive by any means, it definitely is not needed nor does it fit in with the rest of the flavors in this brew. This one is a definite must try for any fan of the style or for the tickers out there. Tick.

Growler poured into a Pint Glass.

A - Pours a hazy glowing gold with a thin white head that dissipates quickly, leaving some patchy haze.
S - Crisp, clean aromas of sweet, doughy malt, toasted grains, mild bananas, a bit of citrus, and Lager yeast.
T - More doughy malt, banana, and Lager yeast. Very refreshing and deceptively complex. I wish more Lagers had this level of refinement, just an infinitely drinkable brew.
M - Smooth and sessionable, with a medium-thin body and good, crisp carbonation.
O - Just an excellent brew from Westbrook, I blew through this growler while enjoying a cool night by the river. Can't ask for more then that!
