8 oz pour into a pint glass on tap at Westbrook at the BA Mexican Cake release. I’ve had this one once before at Closed For Business about 2 years ago before I knew how incredible beer was. I’m so pumped that I got to have it again.

L – Jet black color with a 1-finger brown, frothy head that fades relatively quickly. Not much lacing except for a few wisps of bubbly foam on the side of the glass. Very viscous.

S – The first thing that hits my nose is a huge blast of beautiful roasted coffee. Some chocolate malt and vanilla aromas are there, too, but not as much of the spices as the original. That’s alright with me, though. This is Mexican COFFEE Cake after all.

T – It starts off sweet with chocolate and vanilla but then the coffee blows in with a wonderful bitter, roasted blast. More peppers and cinnamon are prevalent here in the taste, but not as much as the original. I actually prefer this taste to the original as the spices serve as a complement to the bitter coffee rather than an almost overbearing aspect. Very, very tasty.

F – Full-bodied, good carbonation, a velvety smooth mouthfeel, and a bitter, slightly spicy, and slightly dry finish. Bitter roasted coffee lingers for a nice amount of time.

O – This is a phenomenal beer and one that I am very glad that I got to try again. The coffee may be overpowering and may mask some aspects that make the original version great, but I love coffee. All of the other parts of Mexican Cake are still there, but the coffee takes front and center – exactly what should happen in a coffee variant of this beer. I really hope Westbrook bottles this eventually so the love can be spread around to those outside of South Carolina. Great beer and great event from Westbrook!

I just wanted to clarify for others that this was never bottled. Rumor is that it will be bottled in July of 2014 but that is rumor. Very solid at the brewery, enjoyed this. Just wanted to clarify for those who were trying to trade for it.

Overall an excellent brew.

This beer is delicious. It has a TON of cinnamon, so much so that it reminds me of Abraxas. That being said, the chiles are muted compared to regular Cake. But also, THIS ISN'T BARREL-AGED. The trade forums are fucking laughable with this beer. Would you trade a limited wild, or BA beer for Abraxas? No? Didn't think so. Then why would you for this beer? Get a fucking grip people.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Black. Medium khaki head and a thin collar. Stains the glass a little. Strong coffee aroma. Cinnamon equally strong. A bit of green pepper aroma, too. Coffee dominates the flavor. Spices aren't far behind. A bit of dark chocolate before a spicy pepper finish. Medium heavy. Coffee seems to mute a bit of the peppers, which I don't mind.

L: Robust mahogany and rich black hues complemented by a frothy tan head reminiscent of latte foam
S: Distinct cinnamon, peppers, milk chocolate and dark roast coffee - one of the best smelling stouts I've had
T: Fully lives up to its billing of cinnamon, cocoa nibs, habanero chilis, coffee beans and a hint of vanilla
F: Just on the thin side of medium with a moderate amount of carbonation
O: Beautifully executed coffee stout all around. The base Mexican Cake stout is a work of art, but this variant adds a welcomed dose of coffee and vanilla that subdues a bit of the heat and adds a layer of complexity to a very rich flavor base. Thoroughly enjoyable and has one of the best noses of any stout I've had in recent memory.

Had during Brewvival 2012! Served from tap into a Brewvival sampler imperial pint. Poured pitch black with a minimal brown head. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of roasted malt, coffee, pepper, and vanilla. The flavor was of roasted malt, sweet malt, coffee, and pepper. It had a heavy feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. I was actually a little disappointed in this one as I was expecting to give it at least all 4.5's going into it, but it just fell a little short of what I was expecting. However, this was still a solid brew without a doubt. It was served ice-cold which masked quite a few of the flavors and aromas so I used that time to catch up on notes while it warmed up some. This was a good call as the pepper made itself known after warming up and made the brew much more enjoyable. Really glad I got the chance to try this one a few days after having the regular version. A definite must try if you get the chance. Tick.
