Single Hop: Pacific JadeSingle Hop: Pacific Jade
Notes: Our single-hop rye pale ales are created to showcase the flavor and aroma characteristics of individual hop varieties. The grain recipe is kept the same; only the hop variety is changed from batch to batch.

Pacific Jade is a relatively new hop from New Zealand that exhibits a bold citrus and black pepper aroma with a soft bitterness.

A: Poured from a 32 oz. growler to a pint glass. Had a yellow color and a hazy texture. There was an inch of foamy, fairly long-lasting head. Good lacing.

S: A sweet aroma - mostly light fruit - and some hops and rye as well.

T: Tasted of hops (not an overwhelming amount), citrus (orange, lemon), some malt, and the rye in the finish. A pretty well-balanced, sweet flavor.

M: A good amount of carbonation with a dry, smooth finish. Light-bodied.

O: An easy drinking beer that's a well made brew. Very drinkable.

I think that Westbrook has really stepped up their game from when they first started, and I'm glad that they have. It really helps strengthen the fairly young and still growing, Charleston beer scene.

I'm not really versed in Rye Pale Ales, but I thought this was a good offering. When first poured, it had a nice thick, creamy head, that disappeared after a few minutes, leaving a scant lacing behind. Color was a hazy straw, almost hefe-like. The smell was very citrusy, oranges, lemons, some lime, but also had a slight rye bread smell as well. The taste was more of a good balance, between the citrusy hops and the rye, neither was too overbearing. Overall another solid offering from Westbrook.

She was a nature former beauty queen, he a conservative icon. What does that have to do with the review? They bought it and brought it up with the heat. Perhaps a fresher bottle. Here I get a yellow bodied beer with carbonatin rising bubbles and a big head. Where is the jop aroma? I get hops, hops burning lips. I get rye, and lime in the finish.

Over carbonated off the pop of the cap. Slow pour still resulted I excessive head. Orange and lively with cascading bubbles and a large frothy head.

Hmmm a hint of sour aromas make me wonder if this isnt infected? Some spacey yeast and rye aromas with effervescent tropical fruity hops.

Sharp zippy huge carbonation. Rye and yeast both show nicely with light hop bitterness and papaya like fruit favors and a light nectarine or peach stone fruit. Still just a hint of that sour note in the finish that the nose leaked. Over carbonated but a decent beer.

Thanks to dogdoc for this one! Reviewed from notes. Poured from bomber into pint glass.

A: This one pours a hazy dark gold with a huge white head that lasts. Some visible carbonation.

S: Flowery hops and caramel, bready malts. It's a nice hop presence but doesn't really punch.

T: Flowery and bit of pine hops, some peppery and spicy notes, a little earthy, and then sweet malts.

M: Nice weight to mouthfeel and a great amount of carbonation. Somewhat dry finish. Alcohol well-hidden.

O: Good, very interesting & different. Single hop brews are generally a good learning experience for the palate but not always a great beer. This isn't an everyday drinker perhaps, but I would have it again.

Thanks to kkipple for my first from this really interesting looking brewery.

It makes a loud thwop as it releases its well overcarbonated pressure, and pours a huge 4+ finger fizzy head that fills the glass faster than the beer, and fades fairly quickly with soapy lacing, over very hazy carrot orange colored beer.

Nose has a light possible infection aroma, but aside from that comes light spicy rye, light grainy cracker like malts, an interesting grassy like lemongrassy, a hint of a fruity hop like aroma, and a touch of an earthiness.

Taste starts with light sweet malts, a bit grainy but more pale malt like, fruity flavors, both hops and possible yeast addition. The hops bring a light bitterness with slight earthy grassy and hint fruity flavors. The rye comes on strong with spiciness, not a whole lot of other flavor but really spicy. Tons of bubbles make it a bit difficult to get through the flavors as it never wants to stay on the tongue and constantly forcing me to burp. It has a slight yeasty flavor with the grainy malt and earthy flavors. Finish is a bit drier and effervescent, a bit more fruity and grassy, and a bit of grainy earthy flavors lingering.

Mouth is med bodied, way too much carbonation.

Overall OK but not great, interesting malts that get a bit too grainy, a bit yeasty and bready, hops are really light in the background and a bit strange in flavor, although the rye is nice. Oh and WAAAYYY too much carbonation!!!

I bought a bomber at Growlers while on vacation in Hilton Head after trying and enjoying their IPA. I was very excited by try this after I got home. Upon opening I was greeted by an unusual release of CO2. As I poured it in the glass, the beer immediately turned to champange-like foam. The bottle was infected. I notified the brewery to see what their response would be. They admitted thay had a problem with that batch and they should have been pulled from the shelves. Unfortunately, I had the same result with their Covert Hops. They offered to replace them if I brought in the email the next time I am in Charlotte. As I live 376 miles from there, I don't see making the trip and remembering to bring the email. I don't know what I expected, but I thought blaming the store and making a lame offer was disappointing. Not the way to build a faithful following.

Received this as an extra from Thagr81us; thanks Calton. 22 oz. bottle from 04/05/12, poured into my Bell's tulip.

a - Pours a hazy bright orange color with two fingers plus of fluffy white head and moderate carbonation evident. Head lasts for several minutes and leaves nice lacing on the glass.

s - Smells of citrus hops, oranges, fruity malts, light rye, pale malts, and bready malts. Nice orange and rye mix, I like the nose quite a bit.

t - Tastes of fruity malts, caramel malts, bready malts, light citrus, and rye. More rye then the nose but less citrus and orange. A step down for me.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Smooth and pretty easy to drink.

o - Overall a pretty nice rye ber. As it warmed up more rye came out in the taste, but I thought the nose was much better with a bunch of citrus hops and oranges. Worth checking out, especially if you like rye beers.

Served from tap into a shaker. Poured yellow-orange with a white half finger head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, floral, floral hop, citrus, and fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, spice, earth, earth hop, citrus, and citrus hop. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. I had this in the bottle awhile back and saw it on tap and had to jump on it. I was not disappointed. Surprisingly the rye spiciness did not come across on the aroma but there was a nice floral note in its place. The flavor however definitely picked up where the aroma left off and hit you with the spiciness of the rye mixed in with a nice touch of citurs and earthiness. A really well done brew from Westbrook. Can't wait to see what other single hop brews they have in the future.
