BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Westbrook Brewing Co.
South Carolina, United States
westbrookbrewing.com

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
This year’s version (in our opinion) blows the first batch out of the water. The malt bill is simplified, resulting in a lighter, drier beer – which allows the massive hop additions to shine through. A mix of fresh grapefruit, lemons, limes, and oranges was added to the boil, and this batch also features a blend of several different American and New Zealand hop varieties, instead of just Cascade. At 9.5% ABV, this beer means business.

bottled 7/19/12

a - poured a two-fingers thick creamy off-white head into a snifter that left great lacing and billowing throughout. the body was a bright amber color.
s - big citrus hops. tons of grapefruit.
t - huge citrus grapefruit bomb. lip-smacking good.
m - slick, medium.
o - intense and terrific DIPA. really digging Westbrook since I discovered them at Brewvival in Charleston.

A - Pours a clear golden/slightly copper with nearly a finger of near white head that dissipates relatively quickly. Decent lacing is left on the glass.

S - Pretty fantastic citrusy aroma, mostly grapefruit/lime although the description provides a bit of a spoiler. My mouth is almost to the point of watering from the wonderful smells, it probably was when I had the first couple but I've actually had the pleasure of enjoying several of these during the week. Mild caramel type traces come through, some hop bitterness but it is really mostly out shined by the citric fruits. Alcohol is detectable.

T - Fairly dry up front, a nice hop bite for sure... immediatly followed by flavors of orangeish/grapefruit and a very mild/complimentary lemon/lime type tasty tartness. Minor alcohol presence at the finish into a dryness that lingers for maybe 15 seconds. Really ideal IMO

M - Light+ or Medium-. Very drinkable for the abv, appropriate carbonation

O - Was really looking forward to this one, huge fan of the Charleston Beer Exchange and citrusy hop bombs so this is 100% up my alley. It did not disappoint, easily one of my 5-10 favorite IPAs. I fully intend on getting as much of this as I can while I can.

22 oz bottle poured into a tulip at cellar temperature.

L – Pale amber color with a 1-finger white bubbly head that dissipates fairly rapidly. Lots of sticky lacing, though. Clear with a mild amount of carbonation bubbles.

S – A strong, strong citrus presence of mostly grapefruit but also lime and orange from both the hops and the added fruit. Caramel and toasty malt is present as well, but this is a citrus bomb. Smells fantastic.

T – Starts off sweet with caramel malt and oranges, rapidly progresses to the bittersweet taste of fresh grapefruits and limes, and finally builds to a bitter blast of citrusy hops.

F – Medium-bodied with decent carbonation, a tangy and sticky mouthfeel, and a dry and bitter finish that steadily builds to a very bitter aftertaste. Grapefruit bitterness lingers for a long time and pairs well with the throat-warming sensation from the alcohol.

O – This beer is a delicious citrus monster. If you’re not a fan of grapefruit, stay away, but if you are, this may be your favorite beer. The bittersweet sharpness of the added fruit slightly takes away from the drinkability, but it adds a great uniqueness to the beer. And don’t get me wrong, this thing is still very drinkable. Westbrook has yet to disappoint me, and the fact that they teamed up with CBX for this one only adds to its credibility. Very nice DIPA.

Honey gold pour with a forced 1/8th of a finger of deep cream head. No retention. Active carbonation with a good amount of fine bubbles. Very light lace.

Nose is an explosion of citrus, more from the fruit add-ins. Getting lots of grapefruit, tangerine, orange. Very earthy, dusty, estery hop mix on top of that - all combining for a sweet flavor. Very nicely done.

Taste brings even more citrus fruit and dusty, earthy hops. Tangerine, orange, grapefruit, and hop esters all combine for a great taste. Like the hop oil and earthy flavor. Enough malt behind this to give appropriate backbone without overpowering the hops. Fairly significant hop and alcohol burn.

Extremely thick feel for the style. Very oily. Thick and slick.

Really glad I got to try this.

Another great beer from Msquared2! Thank you!

Appearance. Pours a hazy honey-amber with a thin white head.

Smell. Big grapefruits, oranges, lime, some soda crackers and cedar.

Taste. Sweet and tangy citrus fruits, floral hops, some toasty, crackery malts. Alcohol is really well hidden.

Mouthfeel. Not quite full bodied, low and smooth carbonation. Just a little warmth.

Overall. A really nice, big, and as promised, very citrusy dipa. Yum.

Bomber poured into a snifter
Bottled on: July 19, 2012

A: Pours a translucent golden amber with just under a finders width of off white colored head, which quickly dissipates down  to a thin film and bubbly outer ring.  Leaves a fair amount of lacing in streaky patches, along with some alcohol legs down the sides of the glass.

S:Huge citrus aroma, most notably grapefruit and freshly peeled oranges. There are significant resiny hop aromas as well.  A solid malt backbone brings some sweetness to the nose.  The faintest hint of booze.  Excellent aroma, this flat out just smells great.

T: More malt presence than I anticipated, but also lots of grapefruit. This is definitely sweeter than I expected, reminiscent of a grapefruit slice dipped in sugar,  like when I was a kid.  Resiny hop characters again on the tongue, hints of lemon zest and some piney bitterness on the finish.  Honestly, not as citrus prominent as I anticipated, but still damn good.  Alcohol makes itself know throughout the drink.  For the most part  it's a welcomed complexity in my eyes and adds to, rather than detracts, from the palate profile.  However, it does get a touch strong towards the end of the second glass from the bomber.

M/D:  Such a great smoothness to this beer.  Medium bodied, with a subdued but appropriate carbonation, and a light slightly drying finish.  ABV is noticeable but restrained, and the drinkability is just scary good.  This was flirting with perfect until it got a touchy boozy towards the end.  Still great in this department though.

O: Overall, a really great beer.  Westbrook seems to hit a home run with every beer of theirs that I try, so big props to them.  Also, a job well done to the guys at The Charleston Beer Exchange who collaborated on this one.  Well done.

Pours a cloudy orange-amber. Minimal lacing with slight foam ring around the edge of the glass, but then I didn't really give it an aggressive pour.

Nose is fruity with orange and lemon citrus notes.

Taste is really hoppy with slight sweet malt in the background. Flavors of bitter orange peel, some spice hints. Hop finish is quite strong with a little alcohol heat. Mouthfeel is thick and has nice prickly carbonation.

Really nice citrusy, hoppy DIPA. Would love to try this on tap. Yummy.

On tap @ The Lodge in Hilton Head SC.

I've been sipping the regular Westbrook IPA all week, and now on our last night here I find this beer on tap and HAD to try it.

Me likey.

Clear light golden body... Small head, rather weak lacing, but decent retention.

Smells hugely of citrus fruits with a light dry booziness coming through.

The flavor has a little sweet bread (think Hawaiin bread) kind of note before the citrus hops just fucking kill it. Large grapefruit, orange, pineapple, and lemon notes with a nice New Zealand hop kick I can pick out.

Good bitterness, not too overwhelming, but firm and strong-- you KNOW you're drinking a hopped up beer for sure. Kind of light body, but good carbonation and a nice dry finish.

Overall-- delicious. It isn't a world class DIPA, but it certainly rocked my world after this past week. Totally worth a try.
