BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Westbrook Brewing Co.

Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 9.50%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
This year’s version (in our opinion) blows the first batch out of the water. The malt bill is simplified, resulting in a lighter, drier beer – which allows the massive hop additions to shine through. A mix of fresh grapefruit, lemons, limes, and oranges was added to the boil, and this batch also features a blend of several different American and New Zealand hop varieties, instead of just Cascade. At 9.5% ABV, this beer means business.

Pours a wonderful pale orangey hue with a tall fluffy snow white head that settles slow to a nice cap that leaves sheets of lacing down glass.

An explosive hoppy, citrus and citrus rind aroma leaps from the glass. Leaving me mildly hallucinating as I pull the glass from my nose holes.

Again the taste just SCREAMS of citrus fruit and rind. Strong bittering seems to race to the tongue leaving a pleasingly strong citrus rind. The bittering flavor is courted by ample booze pitching woo for a nice compliment. The booze is not at all unpleasant, rather dare I say...refreshing.

After a LONG day laboring in the sun on a famousely hot columbia day, this is quite refreshing. The quaffability is highlighted by an immensly pleasing dry character and oily citrus goodness.

Damn Edward you folk did one haaluva job on this one. Hard to belive that this is my 1st review for these guys. Definitly improved on last years brew, which I really enjoyed.

The brew is the color of orange hard candy. The head is pure white and frothy which fades into a ring and produces light lacing. One can see right through the liquid and spot the gas bubbles rising in columns.

The nose is dominated by pine resin hops. Behind the hop aroma there is some malt trying to make itself present. Twirling the brew creates a more balanced nose. The big resinous hops are replaced by hints of citrous zest. Eventually, the resin comes back in full force.

The flavor is nicely balanced. There is an initial hint of light citrous which is very refreshing and delicious. Then the hops slap the tongue with sharp bitterness. The bitterness subsides pretty quickly to reveal a citrous and malt finish.

The feel is medium. There is not much carbonation detected. The oils of the hops and citrous peel coat the mouth and allow those flavors to linger.

My ideal for the style is balance across the board. The nose is primarily dominated by the hops and citrous which brings the overall score down a bit. The taste does make up for the lack of balance in the nose. The hops used do not completely dominate and the alcohol is very well integrated. I'm glad I was able to land a bottle.
