Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 10.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
For our Second Anniversary beer, we tapped into the legendary fictional adventures of the mythical Cap'n Skoon to bring you this monster Baltic Stout. It's big and roasty like an imperial stout but fermented with a German lager yeast. Ideal for sipping now, or be like the Cap'n and stash some away in your cargo hold for the years to come. Cheers!

Received in a trade and poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Poured a dark, dark black hue with a one finger super dark milk chocolate hued head that leaves some light creamy side lacing and a gentle creamy blanket. Solid.

S - Aromas of rich chocolate, roated malts, light sweetness. Some faint dark fruits, almost like dark chocolate covered raisins.

T - Taste is just like the nose. Super rich chocolate, nice roasted malts, dark chocolate bitter finish. Loads of chocolate. Smack in the middle is dark fruits, primarily raisins for me, resulting in a big time chocolate covered raisin taste profile.

M - Mouthfeel is lightly carbonated, creamy, alcohol hidden well.

O - Overall, a solid beer but...this is more russian imperial than anything due to how big the dark fruits are.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Bottled 12/18/2012.

Appearance - Very inky and dark. Stains the glass. Small khaki head. Wispy surface.

Smell - Dark fruits. Intense roast. Raisins. A little oxidized and a ton of black patent malt.

Taste - Really raisiny. Could be a result of age. Very bitter malts. Ashy coffee malts. Bitter.

Mouthfeel - Bitter. Medium heavy. Medium carbonation.

Overall - This could be too old. Seems strange that it would be. Either way, it's intense.

Westbrook Brewing Co. - Cap'n Skoon's Ballistic Stout, poured into a Craftgeer snifter.

Look - Super thick viscosity motor oil black with a brown hue around the sides. Minuscule mocha head that dissipates quickly. Nice rings of lacing.

Smell - Aroma is super decadent chocolate with sweet malt and a touch of roast.

Taste - Rich and carbed. Chocolate and sugar comes in first, followed by fruity roasted malt and an earth bitter almost hop-like finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. Rests bitter and plum. Good drinkability. Booze is well hidden, perhaps too well hidden haha.

Overall - This is a good brew, a robust imperial stout. A must try for sure.

Bottled 12/18/12

Pours black with light tan head. Minimal head that dissipates to ring along the sides of the glass.

Smell is sweet and malty with lots of raisins and chocolate.

Taste is sweet and chocolatey malts up front. Ripe fruit such as plums or raisins come in later. Good bit of dark chocolate bitterness comes late. Matbe a hint of smokiness too.

Mouthfeel is medium-full bodied. Average carbonation.

Overall this was excellent.
