Notes: A monstrously big and hoppy Double IPA. The recipe for this beer was developed by Brewer Shane Cummings. F**kin' A!

22oz bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 7.99. Bottled 3/14/13. Served in a Three Floyds teku.

Pours deep gold with a half finger of near white head that leaves very little lace.

Smells sharply of grapefruit, pine and orange peel with a bit of alcohol.

Taste is full of big, bitter pine, citrus peel, grapefruit, pepper, biscuit and a big dose of booze (much more than expected).

Medium body with fairly sharp carbonation. Bitter, lingering finish with some fusel alcohol burn.

Tasty but lacking something to really elevate it above other DIPAs. Comes accross as much more boozey than most in the style. No regrets though and I'll probably even buy it again sometime.

Bottled on 3/31/2015: pours hazy copper color with a lot of active carbonation and bubbles racing up the brew like champagne; creamy 1-2 finger beige head that faded average to on the fast side which left very good lacing.

Nose is a potent mix of citrus fruit, graham cracker, caramel, malty biscuit and red grapefruit a bunch of tropical fruit come through like mango, pineapple, oranges and lemons, but the malt backbone is a solid foundation for the balance with wheat bread and toasted grains or cracked wheat. Sweetness is average and spices minimal but it still smells good. A little light for a DIPA, but close enough.

Tastes is sweeter and maltier than the nose with a lot more malt coming through, as well as some toffee and spices like pepper and brown sugar. Like the nose, the basics are covered with citrus hops, graham cracker, tea leaf, caramel, biscuit, grapefruit, mango, pineapple, orange peel, lemon zest, dry floral hops, dry grass, toasted grains and some piney hops. Balance is off a little as the malt has the slight edge, and for a DIPA the hops are not very aggressive and dominating like I had hoped for.

Mouthfeel is creamy and very smooth, with lighter than average carbonation, a medium body and only a minor bitter touch in the finish. Overall this was a good beer but not the hop monster the bottle hyped it up to be ("monstrously big and hoppy...."). I like Westbrook and most of the stuff I've had from them, but this one came up a little short.

22 oz. bottle served in a Westbrook snifter. Bottled 3/14/13, enjoyed 3/23/13. Big thanks to rnorgart for the bottle.

A: Pours a clear amber color with a white head forming on the pour. It recedes to a thin ring that leaves some splotchy lace behind.

S: Pine and resin with some light tropical fruits. Mild melon with a little pineapple. Sweet bready malts with a touch of fresh cantaloupe.

T: Definitely some ripe green melon with a little resin-like bitterness. A touch of caramel sweetness with some bready malts. More tropical fruits with some mango, pineapple and cantaloupe.

M: Medium to light bodied with a medium carbonation level, but sort of soft in texture. Sweet finish.

O: This drank extremely well for being almost 10%. Very nice texture, well hidden alcohol and great flavors. Glad I was sent another bottle.

Poured into a Haw River Farmhouse Ales teku glass. Label says Bottled On: 3/31/15

A- Pours a dark amber color with a 1/4 inch off-white head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a super-sheer swirl pattern of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves small clots behind.

S- Very malt-forward aroma reminds me of a hoppy barleywine. Firm booze fume.

T- Reminds me a lot of 90-Minute where the hop bitterness and flavor is accentuated but the malt still dominates overall. That being said, it's a bit more drinkable than 90-Minute with a good balance between the sweetness of the malt and bitterness of the hops.

M- Oily and slick with medium carbonation and a body leaning toward the fuller side.

O- Definitely drinks more like a hoppy barleywine due to the emphasis on the malt profile but it's very smooth if not very complex.

a really good ipa, maybe a little older now than it should be, but not way old, they just have been in the market a little while now. its good beer, but not as good as i had hoped it would be. its not all that unique i didnt think, although its obviously well made. i get a citra type hop profile form it, lemony and bright and fruity, but its not real bitter, and frankly not bitter enough to balance the sweetness, and my takeaway here is that it might be better around 7% abv, less grain making it sweet and all, and less booze getting in the way in the end. i like all the body, and i like the flavor profile of the hops, must be more than just citra, but thats kind of the lead horse i pick up in this one. fuller bodied too, which i really like, and creamy in feel with a ton of tiny bubbles making it seem a lot lighter than it is, but it doesnt warm up all that well, sort of comes apart a little bit, and the hops fade a lot. this could be a produce of it being a few months older than is optimal. overall its another solid release from westbrook, but their hoppy beer has never been what impresses me most in their lineup. fair for 8 bucks though, thats for sure.
