a really good ipa, maybe a little older now than it should be, but not way old, they just have been in the market a little while now. its good beer, but not as good as i had hoped it would be. its not all that unique i didnt think, although its obviously well made. i get a citra type hop profile form it, lemony and bright and fruity, but its not real bitter, and frankly not bitter enough to balance the sweetness, and my takeaway here is that it might be better around 7% abv, less grain making it sweet and all, and less booze getting in the way in the end. i like all the body, and i like the flavor profile of the hops, must be more than just citra, but thats kind of the lead horse i pick up in this one. fuller bodied too, which i really like, and creamy in feel with a ton of tiny bubbles making it seem a lot lighter than it is, but it doesnt warm up all that well, sort of comes apart a little bit, and the hops fade a lot. this could be a produce of it being a few months older than is optimal. overall its another solid release from westbrook, but their hoppy beer has never been what impresses me most in their lineup. fair for 8 bucks though, thats for sure.

"A monstrously big and hoppy Double IPA. The recipe for this beer was developed by brewer Shane Cummings. F**kin' A!" Brewed in the style of an American Imperial IPA, available in 22 oz. bottles and on limited draft as an annual release.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a tulip glass. Served above degrees Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a foamy whipped head of a buttercream color over a densely hazy golden amber body. Ample carbonation and a very thick shroud of haze lies in the body of this beer. Retention is good and lacing is light and spotty. 3.75

(Smell) Sharp bitterness of lemony, piney and pithy citrus hops, very brazen and bold hop aroma. Slight malt character of caramel syrup, some light biscuit, moderate grain malts and a mellow waft of alcohol. Potency is high. 3.5

(Taste) While full in flavor, this DIPA comes off better rounded-out than the aroma suggests. Creeping bitterness from the first sip, with notes of pine, earthy hops and delicate citrus notes teams up with an equally potent malt body of caramel grain syrup with a light buttery malt body. Finishes very dry with a dragging hoppy bitterness, and grapefruit juice after the swallow. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, moderately residual, lightly chewy, sharply dry. Carbonation is modest, with a medium frothiness and a mildly crisp finish. Body is medium+ for the style, medium/heavy overall. Balance is slightly grainy and hoppy bitter over sweet. Alcohol presence is moderate and there are no off characters to mention. 3.5

(Overall) While an enjoyable Imperial IPA, I find this beer is a bit brazen in too many directions to find some real harmony in it. Sharp bitterness, flavorful but limited-range hop choices and a malt body whose depth is lost beneath harsher graininess. For those looking for a boldly flavored DIPA, this one is a fair candidate for you, but it wasn't nearly my favorite by the brewery and especially of the style. 3.75

Bought a month ago in Rochester, N.Y. Westbrook is not available in my state.

Poured from the 22 oz., bottle into a Tree House stemmed tulip.

a: Hazy deep orange with a half finger white head which receded quickly to very thin surface foam and spotty lacing.

s: Dank pine resin, becoming stronger

t: Strong vegetal grassiness up front followed quickly by a heavy hop bite with lingering bitterness.

m: Medium, very good body, some carbonation tingle.

o: No denying the hoppiness here, but the bitterness is not balanced by particularly pleasant flavors, leaving the impression you are drinking crushed weeds. The aroma is also so intense at first that it encourages coughing. Does mellow out but not enough to become outstandingly enjoyable. Ultimately it's claim to fame may be the grassiest-smelling-and-tasting DIPA on the market.
