22 oz bottle poured into a snifter at cellar temperature.

L – Black color with a beautiful 2-finger frothy, bubbly, rocky, brown head. Really nice retention and a few patches of lacing.

S – Chocolate, milk, and just a bit of coffee. Not complex, but exactly what you would expect.

T – It’s sweet nearly all the way through with milk chocolate and a touch of vanilla coming on first. As the taste progresses, some bready and grainy malt (and maybe oats) comes through, followed by a bitter burst of robust roasted coffee. Really tasty beer.

F – Medium-bodied with decent carbonation, a creamy and mouth-coating feel, and a bittersweet and dry finish. Bittersweet cocoa and coffee flavors linger.

O – This is a nice milk stout. It’s not overly groundbreaking, but it’s just exactly what you would expect from a solid beer of this style. It’s very drinkable and very tasty. Another strong offering from Westbrook.

Poured in to a signature Westbrook Snifter, the pitch black liquid fills the glass with an audible glug. Slow carbonation gives rise to a one-finger cappuccino colored head that makes a brief appearance before retreating in to the murky depths. Big soapy bubbles remain in patches across the surface and around the collar. This is one badass looking milk stout. The deep darkness of the beer lets you know that you are in for something far from ordinary. A rich, porter-like aroma gives way to milk chocolate, molasses and dark roasted coffee. The flavors are equally enticing. Dark cocoa fudge and sweet brown sugar up front, followed by burnt coffee bitterness on the back of the tongue. Herbal hops play off the charred malts, accentuating the acrid aftertaste and attempting to keep the beer in balance. The full flavor and feel is achieved with subtle carbonation, producing a silky, slick mouthfeel. This is a damn good milk stout. One that packs tons of flavor with a tame ABV and a satisfying gulp. Yet another example of how udderly awesome Westbrook Brewing is.

Milk Stouts find an appropriate corollary in SunChips due primarily to the fact that I don't know anyone who doesn't appreciate them. At least in my small sphere, they are universally enjoyed. That is not, however, to deny a hierarchy -- one could not readily make the statement that there is parity amongst SunChips flavors. Udderly Milk Stout is never going to be Harvest Cheddar or Garden Salsa but it could make a strong run for the French Onion slot and it should be admired accordingly.

L: Typical dark brown/black body. I poured a little too aggressively so got a much larger head than normal. The head is a very dark tan that is thicker in the center, light and bubbly around the edge. Retention is decent and didn't leave as much lacing as I expected

S: Minimal sweet milk, but mostly dominated by sweet malt and earthy notes.

T: Dark chocolate with a quick splash of sweet milk. The initial sips had a strong coffee finish, but that seems to have disappeared entirely. Now finishes with moderate to strong vanilla and malt.

F: One the lighter side of a medium body with too much carbonation in my opinion that takes away from the taste potential. The combination feels too light for the flavors.

O: I wasn't overly impressed in the beginning and I think the feel hurts the taste badly in the end. Unfortunately my least favorite beer so far from Westbrook.

Served from bottle into a Westbrook snifter (proper!). Poured a massively dark brown (almost black) with a half finger light tan head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, chocolate, dark chocolate, cream, and milk. The flavor was of sweet malt, cream, milk, milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and subtle roasted malt. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. The lactose aspect going on in this one was overly present throughout the aroma and flavor. This made this one extremely easy to drink and quite enjoyable. The sweetness from this aspect blended really well with the roastiness from the dark chocolate going on. I really hope to see this one brewed more often as this was a really solid milk stout and among one of the better ones I've had in my day.
