Take a sip of this utterly luscious and creamy stout brewed with flaked oats and lactose. Don't forget to wipe off the 'stache...or keep it!

Growler from Green's Piney Grove, poured into a Conquest Snifter.

A: Pours an opaque brown/black, with barely a tinge of ruby when held to the light. Two fingers mocha head that eventually settles to a cap; this cap lasts throughout the beer. Honestly, this looks like an RIS. Fantastic.

S: Smells like an Imperial Stout, too. Big roasted grain, bitter chocolate, and hint of dark fruit.

T: Classic sweet stout. Roastiness up front, which quickly fades into a lingering sweet chocolate. Long, sweet finish.

M: Medium-bodied, initially prickly carbonation that dies down after a while. Not as thick as I'd hoped from the addition of oatmeal and lactose, but a little bit of creaminess.

O: A very nice sweet stout. Westbrook rarely disappoints, and this is definitely one to pick up each year.

Received this as an extra in a trade, poured into my Duvel tulip.

A - Poured a nice dark black with a massive billowing head that was well over 4 fingers. If I didn't know any better I'd say it was infected.

S - Aromas of chalky chocolate, some lighter lactose, dark malts, some subtle sweetness.

T - Taste is similar to the nose with a fair amount of metallic twinge. Gets in the way of the chocolate and dark malts. There is some sweetness but this is just really messy.

M - Mouthfeel is aggressively carbonated, really gets in the way.

O - Overall this beer was a downright mess. The nickel/metallic flavour and incredibly aggressive carbonation turned this beer into a quick drainpour. A shame...

650ml bottle into a Spiegleau Stout glass. Paid £5.00 for a single bottle.
Bottled: 11/11/15

Pours an opaque, very dark brown, almost black body that when held to the light shows some red glimmers near the edges of the glass. A large, fluffy, four-finger in height, light tan coloured head with excellent retention slowly reduces to a thin cap, leaving behind small specks of soapy lace.

The relatively subtle nose is led primarily by a mixture of lightly roasted dark and chocolate malts. Lesser notes of milk chocolate and a very faint generic fruitiness are both perceptible underneath. Taste roughly follows suit, leading upfront with a bittersweet combination of earthy, powdered baking chocolate, lightly roasted dark malts and sweet, toasty grains. Mid palate, fleeting hints of sweet, creamy lactose and milk chocolate transition quickly into mildly bitter, darker roasted malts and slightly acidic, espresso-like coffee profiles. In the mouth, a light to medium body and aggressive carbonation give a thin but smooth and faintly creamy feel. Bitter baking chocolate, cocoa powder, earthy roast and dark espresso comprise the majority of the beers back end, drying the palate to finish quick and clean despite some lightly chalky astringency.

Overall this is a very good beer. It's an uncomplicated, well-balanced and hugely session-able offering, but just a little lacking in the sweet milk chocolate profiles and creamy texture I’ve enjoyed in other examples of the style. At 9 months old my bottle was probably a little past its prime. If I manage to come across a fresher version in the future I’ll certainly look to re-review. Recommended.

L: Typical dark brown/black body. I poured a little too aggressively so got a much larger head than normal. The head is a very dark tan that is thicker in the center, light and bubbly around the edge. Retention is decent and didn't leave as much lacing as I expected

S: Minimal sweet milk, but mostly dominated by sweet malt and earthy notes.

T: Dark chocolate with a quick splash of sweet milk. The initial sips had a strong coffee finish, but that seems to have disappeared entirely. Now finishes with moderate to strong vanilla and malt.

F: One the lighter side of a medium body with too much carbonation in my opinion that takes away from the taste potential. The combination feels too light for the flavors.

O: I wasn't overly impressed in the beginning and I think the feel hurts the taste badly in the end. Unfortunately my least favorite beer so far from Westbrook.
